BANGKOK BTS GUIDE

(SKYTRAIN)

The Bangkok BTS (Skytrain) is an elevated rail transport system that covers the routes through most major downtown districts integrating with other transport hubs in Bangkok.

There are two lines to the BTS, the Sukhumvit Line and the Silom Line. The BTS line also connects to the MRT Underground (Metro Rapid Transport), bus and van terminals at Victory Monument, Chatuchak Park and Mo Chit as well as the river boat express near the Chao Phraya River.

Sukhumvit Line: Runs north to east of Bangkok. It starts from Mo chit to On Nut.Silom Line: Runs west to south of Bangkok. It starts from National Stadium to Wongwian Yai in Thonburi.

Both these BTS lines intersect at the Siam Station and interconnect with the MRT Underground at three points Sala Daeng, Chatuchak Park and Asok stations. The train frequency is every 3 to 6 minutes and peak periods are between 7.30am to 10.00 am and again at 4.30pm to 8.00pm. The service starts at 6.30 am and the last train is at 11.30pm. The fare per person starts at 15 baht per stop and tickets or passes can be purchased from the ticketing counter at each station or via ticketing machines located in the lobby of each station.

Try to schedule your traveling time between peak periods as the trains are exceptionally packed during these times by people commuting to and from work. This is one of the most convenient modes of transport in Bankok. Using the BTS is the fastest, cheapest, coolest and smoothest way to get to anywhere within central Bangkok.

Tourists and visitors can pick up a detailed BTS city map for free from any station or tourist information center. Disabled person facilities are also available at Mo Chit, Siam, Asok, On Nut and Chong Nonsi BTS Stations. Information centers are located at Siam, Nana and Saphan Taksin BTS Stations.

Fares and Passes

The fare per one stop starts at 15 baht, however you can also buy a one-day pass or the BTS Smart Pass if you are using it long term. Also available is the 30 Day Pass for Adults where it is charged per number of trips per 30 days.

The one-day pass gives you unlimited travel on any BTS line for a single day and is suitable for short stay tourists. You can purchase this card from the BTS ticketing counters at 120 baht per card.

The Smart Pass or also known as Stored Value Card is more for the tourist who is planning to stay for a longer time in Bangkok. This is a card valid for five years and is based on a top up system. You can buy the card from the ticketing counter at any BTS station for a 30 baht refund-able deposit and top up starts from 100 baht up to 2,000 baht.

The 30-Day Pass for Adults is valid for use within 30 days and calculated based on a fixed number of trips per duration.

Bangkok Underground (MRT) Mass Rapid Transit Guide

Passes are available in the form of :

1. Daily pass of unlimited rides per day – 120 baht2. Three day pass of unlimited rides per day – 230 baht3. 30 day pass of unlimited rides per day – 1,200 baht

The Bangkok MRT currently services 18 stations and starts from Hua Lamphong to Bang Sue. This is from the south to the north of Bangkok. The interchanges to the Bangkok BTS are at Silom, Sukhumvit and Chatuchak Park where you can take a short walk to the Sala Daeng, Asok and Mo Chit BTS stations.

All MRT stations come with the convenience of elevators, escalators and walkway ramps which is very convenient even for the disabled. Please do note that there are security scanners placed at every entrance way into the MRT, however the staff are very courteous and helpful.

Using the MRT has its peculiarities such as the names of the station do not necessarily indicate a close proximity to the actual area of the name. For instance you need to exit at Silom station to go to Lumpini Park, exit Phaholyothin station to go to Central Lad Phrao and exit Kamphaeng station to go to Chatuchak Market. Another item to note is if you want to go to the Thailand Cultural Center, it is actually quite a way off from the Thailand Cultural Center station and you will require a taxi to get there. So you will need to plan your routes to know which station you should alight from. A good map is useful or you can also ask directions from the information counters at the stations, the staff do speak English.

The operating hours for all MRT stations are: 06.00am to 12.00 midnight daily but bear in mind that the last train is at 11.30pm Frequencies of trains are less than 10 minutes during off peak hoursPeak hours are:06.00am to 09.00am04.30pm to 07.30pm

Frequencies of trains are less than 5 minutes per interval during peak hours. There are facilities such as lifts available for the disabled at every station. For those who have rented cars, there are park and ride facilities located at Sam Yan, Sukhumvit, Petchaburi, Thailand Cultural Centre, Huai Khwang, Ratchadaphisek and Kamphaeng Phet stations. You can get your parking tickets validated at your next stop from the station’s ticketing counter

Fare Rates For The MRT

The average fare rate is 20 – 40 baht from end to end but the price per stop is on average 15 baht. Tickets can be purchased from the user friendly ticket machines or directly from the staff at the ticketing counter in every station lobby. Tickets are in the form of a black colored token so do not misplace this enroute to your next destination. Unfortunately at present the ticketing system from the BTS and MRT are not integrated which makes for a slight inconvenience especially to transit passengers who require the use of both BTS and MRT facilities.

4. Tokens for children and the elderly at special rates can be purchased from the ticketing counters5. Stored value smart cards for multiple rides are also available from the ticketing counters

Page 12: Smile Siam Mag

The MRT System starts from Bangkok Railway Station (Hua Lamphong) along Rama 4 road, crosses Samyan intersection, Silom intersection and Wireless intersection, turns left to Ratchadaphisek Road at Rama 4 intersection, passing Queen Sirikit National Convention Center to Asoke-Sukhumvit intersection, Asoke-Phetchaburi intersection, Rama 9 intersection, Huai Khwang intersection, and Sutthisan intersection, then turns left to Lat Phrao road at Ratchada-Lat Phrao intersection, faces to Lat Phrao intersection, Phahon Yothin road, Chatuchak Park, Mo Chit Northern Bus Terminal (Old), and turns right to Kamphaeng Phet road, passing The Marketing Organization for Farmers (MOF) market, and nally ends at Bang Sue Railway Station.
