Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller (Book & Music) Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller havewritten some of the most spirited andenduring rock and roll songs:“Hound Dog,” “Love Potion No. 9.”“Kansas City,” “On Broadway,”“Ruby Baby” and “Stand By Me.”Their vast catalog includes virtuallyevery major hit by the Coasters (e.g.,“Searchin’,” “Young Blood,”“Charlie Brown,” “Yakety Yak” and“Poison Ivy"). They also workedtheir magic on Elvis Presley, writing“Jailhouse Rock,” “Treat Me Nice”and “You’re So Square (Baby I Don’tCare)” specifically for him. Alltotaled, Presley recorded more than20 Leiber and Stoller songs. As pop auteurs who wrote, arrangedand produced countless recordings bythe above-mentioned artists and
Smokey Joes program_Layout 1 6/3/14 10:16 AM Page 10
others, Leiber and Stoller advancedrock and roll to new heights of witand musical sophistication. Theywere particularly influential duringrock and roll’s first decade, beginning with the original recordingof “Hound Dog” in 1953 andcontinuing through to the Drifters’“On Broadway” in 1963. Theybrought a range of stylistic flavor totheir story songs, which ranged fromwisecracking, finger-popping hipstertunes to quieter love ballads. Theyeven made a foray into country &western at Elvis Presley’s request, penning “Just Tell Her Jim SaidHello.” About all that their songs hadin common was a fundamentalgrounding in rhythm & blues.Leiber, the son of Jewish immigrantsfrom Poland, was born in 1933 andgrew up on the edge of Baltimore’sblack ghetto. Stoller, also born in1933, was raised in Queens, learningthe basics of blues and boogie-woogie from black kids at summercamp. The pair met in Los Angeles in1950 and began writing right away.Leiber served as the sharp-wittedlyricist, while the classically trainedbut jazz- and R&B-loving Stollerwrote the music. In 1951, one of theduo’s early songs, “That’s What theGood Book Says,” was recorded bythe Robins (two members of theRobins later became originalmembers of the Coasters) for ModernRecords. In 1954, Leiber and Stollerformed their own label, Spark, which
released classics like the Robins’“Riot in Cell Block #9.” After astring of similarly gutsy, ground-breaking records, Atlantic Recordssigned Leiber and Stoller to one ofthe industry’s first independentproduction deals. After enjoying a wildly successfulrun at Atlantic in the late ‘50s andearly ‘60s, Leiber and Stoller madetheir final and most successfulattempt at running their own recordlabel in 1964. Red Bird Recordsspotlighted the girl-group sound.Their unerring eye for talent broughtgreat young producers andsongwriters into the Red Bird fold. The company’s second release -“Chapel of Love,” by the Dixie Cups- shot to #1. Of Red Bird’s first 30singles, 10 made the Top Forty - anoutstanding percentage in the musicindustry. Red Bird’s commercialsuccess was equaled by the quality ofthe music, including such girl-groupclassics as the Shangri-La’s “Leaderof the Pack.” Though the era of suchtimeless singles faded long ago,Leiber and Stoller remained active inthe music business to which they’vecontributed so substantially, up untilJerry Leiber's death on August 22,2011, in Los Angeles.
