• Only data source that can be used to compare Barnsley with other areas.

• It is based on a sample of around 170,000 adults in England aged 18 and over.

• The figures for Barnsley are based on around 1,300 (0.7%) adults aged 18 and over.

Figure 1: Smoking prevalence in adults (18+): Barnsley compared to England and Statistical Neighbours (2015)

• Barnsley’s 2015 rate of 21.2% is significantly higher than the England rate of 16.9% (figure 1). • Compared to statistical neighbours, Barnsley has the third highest rate (figure 1). • Trend data shows that Barnsley’s rates have been significantly worse than the rates for England

at each time point during the period 2012 to 2015. However, the 2015 rate of 21.2% is the lowest during the period (table 1).

• Males

• Females

• Age groups

• Wards

• GP practices

• Current smoker

• Ex-smoker

• Mar 2016 data will be available in June 2016

• Collected since December 2011. • Replaced the GP recorded smoking

prevalence that was previously collected (where a smoking record needed to be in the last 15 months, unless aged 25 and over and never smoked).

• Quarterly data (extracted by GP system). • No time limit on when the smoking record

was added. • Analysed by the Research & Business

Intelligence Team. Email: Research&[email protected]

Tel: 01226 787448

• Most robust and reliable smoking prevalence data available for Barnsley.

• Cannot be compared to areas outside of Barnsley.

• Based on around 95% of the GP registered population.

• Only goes back to December 2011.

• Lower smoking prevalence in the older age groups is most probably because smokers have a higher risk of dying prematurely.

• During the period December 2013 to December 2015, smoking prevalence in persons (18+) decreased slightly from 24.5% to 23.7% (table 2). The December 2015 rate of 23.7% represents 46,630 patients in the Barnsley GP registered population who were smokers.

• Prevalence is higher in men than women, apart from in the 18-19 year old age group, where 20.1% of women smoke, compared to 16.8% of men (figure 2).

• Prevalence for both men and women is highest in the 25-29 year old age group (figure 2).
