Volume 2, Issue 2 July 2014 - Sept 2014

Seasons’ Gree ngs!

This quarter of the year marks the beginning of fes val season. These fes vals bring cheers and prosperity. Fes vals are also occasions where families come together, wishing happi-ness to all.

We s ll con nue our business ac vi es amidst twists and turns. With a new government seated at capital, we are hopeful for a total revamp of Infrastructure sector as it has as-sured to improve the standards of governance and thus is certain to take the targets from concept to actual development.

But this will take some me. The surge in Infrastructure development covering Roads, Irri-ga on, Power, Ports, Railways, Water Supply & Sanita on etc. is yet to be noted. Besides this there are many challenges to the sector which include execu on difficul es, rising in-terest costs, inadequate funding, land acquisi on constraints etc.

In spite of all these difficul es the need of growth of Infrastructure inspires to overcome the same.

We at SMS hope that things will turn around and good mes are on the cards. However the present situa on compels to observe a strict economic discipline to be followed. We have to be vigilant to stop superfluous expenses at all levels.

The following are the ways in which we can contribute to our business performance:

Cut down on delays and wastages and non value added costs; Improve produc vity and be proac ve in risk mi ga on; Plan me culously to the last detail; Plug all sources of revenue leakages.

Let’s come together and pledge to commit ourselves and perform with a renewed vigor.

Wishing you and your families a very Happy and Prosperous Diwali.

The Need to Manage Performance:

Editorial

Sustainable growth of any Organiza on depends on the performance of its employees. This performance needs to be managed by aligning the efforts of the employees with the goals of the Organiza on. Or to put it simply, Performance Management is nothing but management of expecta ons between the employee and the Company.

Many Companies have already moved away from a Performance Appraisal mindset to a Performance Management System. A Performance Management System (PMS) provides a framework that will facilitate management of performance and enable to build a per-formance culture in the Organiza on.

PMS is a process for establishing a shared understanding about what is to be achieved and how it is to be achieved and is an approach to managing and developing people that increases the probability of achieving success. The system facilitates management of expecta ons – between the employee and her/his manager for mee ng the individu-al / team / department / Organiza on’s goals.

The purpose of PMS is to contribute to con nuous improvement across the organiza on through greater clarity in se ng objec ves and related performance targets for individ-uals and teams, and monitoring progress in their achievement on a regular basis. It also provides a context in which the developmental needs of the employee are addressed.

PMS is the founda on for effec ve Human Resource Development as it provides the data for all HR systems that focus on development of employees.

Generally a good Performance Management System follows the following process steps:

1. Establish the purpose of the job – employee’s contribu on/role in achieving team /departments objec ves.

2. Decide on key long term objec ves – Should cascade down from the top. 3. Iden fy key deliverables for the year, as individual and as part of the team. 4. Iden fy cri cal success factors – Iden fy key elements that help /hinder the employ-

ee in delivering. This should help in addressing the training and developmental needs of the employee.

5. Monitor and track performance on a con nuous basis.

A Performance Management System should aim at mo va ng the employees to raise the bar and enhance their performance. The system should provide a framework to recognize the top and good performers and reward employees based on their perfor-mance. The system should also provide opportuni es for employees to iden fy their performance gaps and work upon them to raise their performance levels.

Viswakarma pooja at Harnaut Office of Bihar Shariff Division and Surpura Dam:

We have celebrated “Vishwakarma Pooja” at our Harnaut Office of Bihar Shariff division and Surpura Dam division. Vishwakarma Day is a day of cele-bra on for Vishwakarma, a Hindu god, the divine architect, and one of the fourteen precious things born of the Samudra manthan. He constructed the holy city of Dwarka where Krishna ruled, the Maya Sabha of the Pandavas, and was the creator of many fabulous weapons for the gods. He is also called the divine carpenter, is men oned in the Rig Veda, and is credited with Sthapatya Veda, the science of mechanics and architecture. It is celebrated generally on 17 September in Indian states such as Karnataka,Assam, West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Orrisa, and Tripura. The fes val is observed primarily in factories and industrial areas, o en on the shop floor. As a mark of reverence the day of worship is markednot only by the engineering and architectural community but by ar sans, cra s-men, mechanics, smiths, welders, industrial workers, factory workers and others. They pray for a be er future, safe working condi ons and, above all, success in their respec ve fields. Workers also pray for the smooth func on-ing of various machines. It is customary for cra smen to worship their tools in his name, refraining from using the tools while doing so. Modern elec-tronic servers are also worshipped for their smooth func oning. Special statues and pictures of Vishwakarma are normally installed in every workplace and factory. All workers gather in one common place and per-form the puja (reverence).Vishwakarma puja is also celebrated a day a er Diwali, along with Govardhan Puja.
