SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
ST. MARK'S CONGREGATION VOTES TO BECOME A RECONCILING CONGREGATION
Sunday, August 28th, after worship, the following welcome statement
came before the entire congregation for a vote of affirmation:
St. Mark's United Methodist Church of Bloomington, Indiana is an inclusive community bringing Christ-like love, healing and hope to all. We embrace the United Methodist ideal of Open Hearts, Open Minds and Open Doors by welcoming those of all races, cultures, faith traditions, sexual orientations, and gender identities.
Of the 197 votes cast, all were in favor of affirming the statement and
in support of St. Mark’s officially being designated as a Reconciling
Congregation affiliated with the Reconciliation Ministries Network.
Thanks to all who, through the years of this discernment process, have
led the gentle, thoughtful, and courageous conversations that
brought us to this place. If you have questions, contact one of the
pastors or members of the Reconciling Task Force.
We invite you to visit the Reconciling Ministries Network webpage at
www.rmnetwork.org.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
2017 STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGN: ALL IN! The St. Mark’s Stewardship Team is grateful for your
commitment to the 2017 financial campaign: ALL IN!
We are celebrating the great things that are
happening in the St. Mark’s community. At the same
time, we are naming goals and needs for the year
ahead that will help us be “All In” as we strive to fully
live as “….an inclusive community bringing Christ-like
love, healing and hope to all.” Your financial
commitment to the annual budget helps to support
and grow ministries inside our building and beyond:
mission outreach, worship, hospitality, and opportunities for all ages to grow
spiritually and in community.
PROJECT ST. MARK’S: THE SEQUEL The Stewardship Team also invites you to be a part
of Project St. Mark’s: The Sequel. The initial “Project
St. Mark’s” capital campaign began in 2013, and
addressed important building needs: replacing
deteriorating roofing, lighting, carpet, and adding a
covered drop-off area and improved accessibility.
Project St. Mark’s: The Sequel is an invitation to be
part of a two-year pledge campaign to: erase the
remaining debt from additional repair/construction
costs and pledges that could not be fulfilled; to
enable the church to repave the parking lot (as the
potholes grow wider and deeper); and to explore making some needed
updates in the kitchen.
If you have not yet received a 2017 stewardship packet, you can pick one up
in Garton Hall or from the church office. If possible, please return your pledge
cards by Sunday, October 23, either by placing them in the offering plate or by
bringing/mailing them to the church office. This will help church leadership
determine an estimated budget for next year. If you have already returned
your pledge cards, thank you.
Pledge information remains confidential in the Finance Office, and can be
revised at any time. Your pledge makes a difference, regardless of size. Thank
you for your spirit of generosity, and for being All In with St. Mark’s!

GUESS WHO IS COMING TO DINNER SUNDAY, OCTOBER 30TH, 5:00PM The Church Life team is planning opportunities for all of us in the St. Mark’s
community to get to know each other better. The first event planned is
Guess Who Is Coming to Dinner, an invitation to share a meal with a small
group of folks, who, perhaps, you only recognize by sight on Sunday
mornings. Everyone is invited to sign up on the large poster boards in
Garton Hall where you can choose to be either one of the Hosts,
preparing a simple evening supper in your home, or one of the Guests,
joining others at a Host’s home. The Church Life team will take care of
matching Guests with Hosts.
At 5:00pm on Sunday, October 30th, all Guests will come to Garton Hall
where they will receive their Hosts' names, driving directions (and some
small appetizers!). If all goes well, by 6:00pm everyone will wind up in the
right place and will enjoy food, conversation, and fellowship.
More information can be found on the poster boards in Garton Hall, or by
contacting Linda Gluff ([email protected]), Myriam Wood, or the
church office.

WE WELCOME NEW MEMBERS We will be receiving new members into the church during the 10:30am

PEACE WITH JUSTICE SUNDAY
PITCH-IN LUNCH FOLLOWING WORSHIP
WORKSHOP ON ASSET-BASED MINISTRY On Peace with Justice Sunday we challenge ourselves, both individually
and as a church community, to live out our call to advocate for peace
with justice, locally and globally. During the service we will have a
special offering that will be divided between our local initiatives for
peace and the General United Methodist Board of Church and Society.
This year we are pleased to welcome Lynette Fields to our morning
worship service. Lynette is the daughter of St. Mark’s parishioner and
retired UMC pastor Reverend Bob Fields. Lynette will deliver the sermon,
and, after the pitch-in lunch that will follow the service, will conduct a
workshop for us on Asset-Based Ministry.
Lynette is currently the Executive Director of Missions for St. Luke’s United
Methodist Church in Orlando, Florida, where she has served since 1997.
In that role she oversees community and international missions, lay
activation, intern ministry, family emergency assistance, and both United
Methodist Men and Women. Lynette received a B.A. in Theology from
the University of Evansville, and received a Master of Social Work from
the University of Michigan. She has participated in the UMC at every
level, from local to international, and is in demand for her workshops that
explore how churches can be effectively involved in missions. We look
forward to welcoming Lynette and hearing her message.

SUNDAYS @ ST. MARK’S
Sunday Morning Services and Events (con’t):
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 23RD, 2:00PM–4:00PM
2016 CHARGE CONFERENCE The primary purposes of the annual Charge Conference are to review and
evaluate the mission and ministry of the church, and to adopt objectives and
goals recommended by the church’s Leadership Council. The Conference
also affords an opportunity to connect with those from other local UMC
congregations: Garrison Chapel, Cross Roads, Walkers Chapel, Bloomington St.
Paul, Korean, Bloomington First, and Nashville. This year’s conference will be
hosted by St. Paul’s United Methodist Church (4201 West Third Street,
Bloomington, IN 47404). All are welcome to participate.
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 30TH, 11:30AM, FOLLOWING WORSHIP
HOUSEWARMING FOR JEFF & CARLA WYATT & FAMILY The construction of Jeff and Carla Wyatt's Habitat for Humanity House is finally
complete! Jeff, our wonderful St. Mark’s evening custodian and his wife, Carla,
are raising their granddaughters (Keelahlah, age 7, and Kyla, age 3), and
wanted their family to have a home. During the past year, Jeff and Carla
have put in over 250 “sweat equity” volunteer hours working with Habitat for
Humanity. Over the last several weeks they have worked together with
hundreds of volunteers—IU students, faculty and staff—to build their new
home. Sponsored by Whirlpool, the house was constructed near the IU
Football Stadium and was then moved to the McDoel Gardens neighborhood
where the family will live. They hope to be in their new home by Christmas.
On Sunday, October 30th, following our worship service, we, the entire St.
Mark’s Community, want to celebrate the Wyatt’s new home with a
Housewarming Party. Plan to join us for this happy occasion. If you would like
to help with the party, please contact Mary Beth Morgan.
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 6TH, 10:30AM SANCTUARY SERVICE
ALL SAINTS SUNDAY REMEMBRANCE Each year on All Saints Sunday we pause to remember, honor, and celebrate
loved ones and friends who touched our lives. As part of our Sunday worship
service, we will name and light a candle of remembrance for each person in
the St. Mark’s fellowship who has died in the past year and will invite all in the
congregation to remember their own loved ones by lighting a candle to
celebrate the gifts they brought to the world.
Upcoming @ St. Mark’s -9- October, 2016
ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL
October Classes:
BIBLE BANTER The Bible Banter class uses the Scripture text for the morning's sermon as a
discussion-starter. Looking at the passage in its larger context, and sometimes
exploring a bit of Bible-writing history, we offer thoughts on what the morning's
sermon might look like, based on the Scripture the pastor has selected. We
leave time to discuss implications of the Scripture on our own lives, and often
find ourselves delving into topics that wind up far afield from the morning's
original topic. You are invited to bring some coffee/breakfast from Garton Hall
into Room 11 and join the conversation.
NOMADS In October, the Nomads class will read & discuss David Brook’s book, The Road
to Character. All are welcome to join Nomads in Room 10 (even without
reading the book!).
PILGRIMS On Sundays in October, the Pilgrims class will continue a study the Old
Testament using video lectures from Amy-Jill Levine of Vanderbilt University
Divinity School. The goal of the series is to provide members of faith
communities with richer insights into the literature that forms the bedrock of
their faith.
In October, the upcoming lecture topics are:
October 2nd Lecture 14 “The Book of Judges, Part II”
(Judges 8-21)
October 9th Lecture 15 “Samuel and Saul”
(1 Samuel)
October 16th Lecture 16 “King David”
(1 Samuel 16-31, 2 Samuel,1 Kings 1-2)
October 23rd Lecture 17 “From King Solomon to Preclassical Prophecy”
(1 Kings 3 — 2 Kings17)
Each week, discussion follows the video. All are welcome to join Pilgrims in
Room 13.

INFANT AND TODDLER CARE IS AVAILABLE EACH SUNDAY
from 9:30 –11:30AM in rooms 24 and 25.
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 30TH IS “SANCTUARY SUNDAY”
NO REGULAR CHILDREN’S OR YOUTH SUNDAY SCHOOL October 30th falls on the 5th Sunday of the month, the time when we invite all
children and youth to experience the full worship service. Children and Youth
Sunday School will not meet that morning. Infant and toddler care will be
available from 9:30am – 11:30am in rooms 24 and 25, and, for those families
who wish it, childcare for preschoolers through 3rd graders will be available
during the sanctuary worship service. At the back of the sanctuary near the
comfortable rocking chairs, there are activity packets and picture books for
children to explore.
ALL CHILDREN & YOUTH ARE ENCOURAGED
TO PARTICIPATE IN WORSHIP LEADERSHIP While our young people are welcome to be a part of worship leadership any
Sunday, on this last Sunday of October we extend to all children and youth a
special invitation to participate in leadership roles during the 10:30AM worship
service. There are many ways to contribute to our worship experience:
create the Sunday bulletin cover
greet people and hand out bulletins
be an acolyte who lights our candles
read the scripture, offer a prayer, or lead the call to worship
share your talent—musically or artistically
If your child or youth would like to participate in a special role on October 30th,
please contact Mary Beth Morgan.
DO YOU HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT CHILDREN AND YOUTH
MINISTRIES? Contact Mary Beth Morgan ([email protected])
