together to build their home and, in the process, build relationships with one another.

another home until eventually, working together, a commUNITY is built.

ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL MAY CLASSES:

BIBLE BANTER The Bible Banter class uses the Scripture text for the morning's sermon as a

discussion-starter. Looking at the passage in its larger context, and sometimes

exploring a bit of Bible-writing history, we offer thoughts on what the morning's

sermon might look like, based on the Scripture the pastor has selected. We leave

time to discuss implications of the Scripture on our own lives, and often find

ourselves delving into topics that wind up far afield from the morning's original

topic. You are invited to bring some coffee/breakfast from Garton Hall into

Room 11 and join the conversation.

NOMADS The Nomads class is a generally progressive group which meets each Sunday at

9:30am in Room 10 for fellowship and discussion of selected readings on issues

related to faith, spirituality, or social justice. During the month of May, Nomads will

be finishing the book, Amazing Grace, by Kathleen Norris. The class will then

move into a discussion about the Protestant Reformation. Nomads meets every

Sunday in Room 10 and all are welcome. No preparation required.

PILGRIMS The Pilgrims Class studies the Holy Land using the video lecture series, The Holy Land

Revealed, by Dr. Jodi Magness, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Each

week, a discussion follows the video. All are welcome to join Pilgrims at 9:15am each

Sunday in Room 13. The lecture series covers the ancient history of the Holy Land

from 906 BC through 70 AD. Historical sources, such as the Hebrew Bible, the Dead

Sea Scrolls, the writings of Josephus and Philo, the New Testament and the Mishnah

and Talmud, along with the archaeology of the ancient Near East provide a more

complete picture of ancient societies. May 7th: Lecture 17—“The Life of the Essenes”

Fourth in a subset of discussions of another sect that emerged during the Late Second

Temple Period, the Essenes, and the scrolls left behind by their community at Qumran.

May 14th: Lecture #18—“From Roman Annexation to Herod the Great”

Discussion covers the important transition from the Hasmonean period to the reign of

Herod.

May 21st: Lecture #19—“Herod as Builder – Jerusalem’s Temple Mount”

May 28th: Lecture #20—“Caesarea Maritima – Harbor and Showcase City”

Herod may have been a ruthless king, but he is known among archaeologists as the single

greatest builder in the history of Palestine. Achievements included his rebuilding of the

Second Temple and the area of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem and his construction of

another important city, Caesarea Maritima.

HEROES & HEROINES: CHARACTER TRAITS OF EVERYDAY GREATS

Monday: Love & Integrity Tuesday: Courage & Conviction

Wednesday: Listening & Flexibility Thursday: Justice & Mercy

Don your capes and masks! For this week of adventure we will be

learning stories about heroes and heroines of the Bible, and exploring

the qualities of heroism. VBS attendees will reflect on their own

strengths and meet some local everyday heroes. Each day, children

will explore these themes through story, song, art, and play. 4th-6th

graders will have their own special activities. All activities will be age-

appropriate and fun! We will share our strengths in an everyday hero

act of service to our community. The week will culminate in a special

VBS worship service Sunday morning, June 11th, at 10:30am.

Youth (7th-12th Grades) are welcome to volunteer as leaders. Adult

volunteers are needed so we can provide this program free of charge

for all children. Sign up online now to register participants and to

volunteer your time. A liability form is required for all children and youth

to participate. Paper forms are available in Garton Hall. For more

information, contact Sarah Gettie McNeill at

our volunteers who have been providing that breakfast a rest, we are seeking to

broaden the volunteer pool. Breakfasts are a good way to raise money or interest in

your ministry or mission. They also help create a welcoming spirit as people gather on

Sunday morning. If you or you ministry team are interesting in helping provide

breakfast, please contact Jimmy Moore.
