She stood in her living room, smil-ing proudly, wearing a small blue back pack. Addie was ready to go to a pre-school summer day camp this past June. Two and ¾ years old at the time, she was ready to learn new things and meet new friends. The only item in her backpack: a small white bear wearing a shirt that proclaimed SMYRNA.

Addie turned three early in August and, when the Charlotte school year begins, she will continue to be taught at home by her mom. Considering she could sing “Jesus Love Me” all the way through at 18 months, she is quite bright and is receiving an amaz-ing homeschool education.

Addie and her cousin, Lilly Bell, have a love of reading and learning that is advanced for their young age. They have enjoyed books and stories since birth. This is a gift that I would wish for all of the children in our community: books, a love of learning, an excitement about school.

Lilly Bell, whose mother is a spe-cial education teacher in Virginia, attends a small, private day care center where she enjoys stories, creative play, and interacting with friends. She, like Addie, learns quickly and enjoys her “school.”

The new school year has begun in Cobb County and tens of thousands of children have left summer fun behind them for the excitement of the classroom. Here is what I wish for all of students at every grade level:

• Time to be creative and use their imaginations

• Time to have fun and laugh with friends

• An enjoyment of their course work and a love of learning

• Classes that challenge their minds and that offer help when needed

• Recognition and encouragement of each child’s individual talents

• A safe, non-threatening environment• Nourishing food that is healthy and

tastes good • Good friends who are supportive• Teachers, parents and community

who are supportiveWe have some amazing schools and

amazing teachers in Cobb County. But the education of our children does not begin and end at the classroom door. The education begins in the homes with young children being read to and talked to and listened to. It

continues at home as the child grows older, with discussions, books, a place and time for studying and time for family togetherness.

As the child turns into a teen, it becomes harder to have family time, conversations and family fun. When our children were teens and busy with homework and clubs and sports, we would schedule family dinner at a restaurant after church on Sunday. With no distractions we could catch up on their lives. That’s when we learned if they had a date for prom, were running for a class office, trying out for a play, or other news.

I miss those first days of school, taking a picture before they went off to school. I remember so many milestones: first day of pre-school and then kindergarten, first time riding a bus (middle school), Peter driving himself and Katie to school for the first time, and first local school day when they were both in away college. Now we await future school beginnings when our grown children have their own first school day milestones for their own daughters.

HEALTHY BLENDER DRINKS FOR YOUR HEALTHBy Dr. Derek Conte

Why use a blender rather than a juicer?

1) You keep all the vitamins, miner-als and fiber stored in the food skins, seeds and inner structure. It releases the nutrition much more slowly into the digestion, for-tifying you for longer periods and clean-ing you out much more with each bowel movement. Fiber is good exercise for your digestive tract, which is all muscle, and needs regular exercise! Also, ‘juiced’ drinks oxidize within minutes, while blender drinks can last for a couple of days and don’t have to be consumed immediately.

2) Blenders require MUCH less food to do the job. You’ll get 100% yield from your food instead of maybe 10% with a juicer. This saves a lot of money. You’ll get a blender-full of total nutrition rather than a small cup of juice, so it can easily replace full meals and satisfy you. We ALL want to feel satisfied.

3) Blenders cost much less than juicers; a good OSTER “Beehive” 4270, 2-speed blender with a 600 watt motor, all-metal drive system, all-metal casing and heavy glass 48oz. vessel costs about $50.00 at TARGET or on AMAMZON. And, trust me, 2-speeds is all you’ll ever need! You can upgrade the standard 4-blade cutter to the 6-blade (#118530-001 for $6.99) for much greater efficiency. It is NOT neces-sary to buy a VITAMIX blender for $500 or even a NINJA blender for $250. Good juicers can cost $300-$500 or more.

4) A blender is MUCH easier to clean. Just rinse and rack! Juicers require prompt and thorough cleaning.

So here we go! Finely chop the veggies so they blend more easily and to make room for everything and place them in the vessel. THEN add water up to 1/3 of the vessel after putting in the food. It doesn’t matter if the fruit is over-ripe. It’s all the sweeter and it doesn’t need to be thrown away.

One patient has neuropathy in her feet and arthritis in the knee that prevented her from doing a squat. After 10 days of doing this (even with some food slip-ups) she had significant improvement in the neuropathy and was able to easily do a squat. This implies that processed foods and grains can cause inflammation.

1 large leaf of Kale, 1 handful of Spin-ach, 1 small Carrot, 1 small stalk of Celery, 1 handful of Cilantro, 1 handful of Blue-berries, 3-4 Strawberries, 1 Banana, 1 small Apple or Pear, 1 small slice of fresh Ginger, 1 level teaspoon of “cracked-wall” Chlo-rella, 2-3 tablespoons of Raw Agave Nectar to sweeten things up, and 1 full helping of

creativity! Check on-line for more ideas.Blend on “low” and slowly add ice to

fill the vessel while blending one to two minutes or more, depending on your tex-ture preference. Use more or less water to control thickness. This is a delicious and very nutritious drink. Consuming these foods raw yields a much higher nutritional content than cooked or even steamed veg-

etables. All the enzymes that make the body go remain intact. You will feel the difference in your life right away! You’re going to love this. Do this for several days and see many health problems start to go away. When you eat solid foods in between, eat quality foods. No grains, sugar or junk!

Hints: Buy several containers of berries when they are on sale and freeze them in a zip-lock to

keep well. Overripe bananas can be peeled and frozen too as any other fruit can. No need to waste! They taste even better when overripe from the freezer. Chlorella is a super-food from plants. “Cracked-wall” means the cell walls have been broken so that you can absorb all the power of this nutrient. Don’t let the Cilantro and Ginger scare you off. They add great freshness and are balanced by the sweetness of the Raw Agave Nectar. The total cost of all this goodness is around $1.00 per blender-full. It doesn’t cost a lot to be healthy.

SMYRNA TO GET NEW ALCOHOL MONITORThe Governor’s Office of Highway

Safety has awarded the Smyrna Police Department $8,000 to purchase the new Intoxilyzer 9000 which replaces the Intoxi-lyzer 5000. The state mandated that all law enforcement agencies transition to the 9000 model by 2015. The Intoxilyzer 9000 is the evidential breath alcohol testing instru-ment used by law enforcement agencies in Georgia to determine whether a person is driving under the influence of alcohol. The instrument measures a person’s breath alcohol content, expressed in grams of alcohol per 210 liters of breath.

The Smyrna Police Department is committed to D.U.I. enforcement and this instrument will assist officers in their efforts. The Intoxilyzer 9000 will be installed inside the Smyrna detention center and will be operated by trained and certified officers.

By Jonathan R. Peak Whether you’ve been waiting for your

upcoming vacation for years or squeezing in a last minute trip before the summer is over, the anticipation of travel can be as exciting as the actual trip. As we’ve seen in world news lately, travel can lead to unpredictability, but fear does not have to hamper your plans. Here are a few travel suggestions to put your mind at ease, sugges-tions that many vacationers over-look:

Prepare your Last Will and Testament.• Prepare your Last Will and Testament. This is perhaps the most impor-tant gift you can give loved ones if accident should strike. This document designates the persons who will manage your estate and the persons to whom you want your property to pass.

• Create a Trust. Trusts are not just for the wealthy! If you want loved ones to receive property without the hassle of probate, whether during your life or after, you can place your assets into a trust. This could be particularly helpful for those planning extended trips overseas for the maintenance and care of your estate or loved ones while you are alive, but away from home.

• Designate a Financial Power of Appointment and Advance Medical Directive. These simple documents select

the persons – be it family, friend, attor-ney, financial planner, etc. – you trust to manage your finances or make health care

decisions for you if you are inca-pacitated through illness, accident, age, etc. Should something happen while you are away, your agents will be able to make decisions on your behalf.

• Traveling abroad with chil-dren? Have an Authorization for International Travel, which will allow you to designate another adult, such as family, friends, or a nanny, to travel alone with your children.

Even if you and your spouse are traveling together with your own children, this is an important document to have in case some-thing happens and only one of you can to travel with the children.

These suggestions are meant to be helpful tips to help you leave your wor-ries behind on your next vacation. By talk-ing with a trusted estate planning attorney before you leave, you can travel with peace of mind and have more freedom to truly enjoy life.

More than 60 vendors will showcase their wares. We have something for every-one, from Harley Davidson and Luxury Cars to artisans and entertainment! Be sure to take Fido to the Bone Bar, where nearly 4000 pounds of dog treats are available for you to scoop – and they’re free! Looking for a new family member? Visit the eight Rescue groups who will have furry friends of all sizes just waiting to meet you.

Join Jr. Miss Cobb County as she starts the Pet Parade with a full court of Princesses and Princes! There are prize packages for each category of the contest.

The People’s Choice award goes to the Canine with the most votes or “Likes” on Facebook. Vendor information and parade registrations can be found on the website at www.SweetwaterMission.org.

The event is being held to support and raise awareness of Sweetwater Mission, a nonprofit that has been helping families with food, clothing, job training and more since 1968. On average two tons of food is given out every day.

Also look for beautifully handcrafted items for sale at the Mutt Strutt, made by the participants in Sweetwater’s newest artisan program for the formerly chroni-cally homeless.

Our mission since 1968 has been to prevent hunger and homelessness. We help stabilize families by providing basic needs and transform lives through education and employment opportunities.

Officer Vill was shot five times in February during one altercation with two drug sellers but was able to call for assistance and relay information that was needed on the suspects to help with their apprehension later on in the day. The two drug suspects are now behind bars and are no longer a threat to the citizens of Cobb County and to the metro area. Officer Vill is on administrative leave while he recov-ers from his injuries. Officer Vill was also recognized for his excellent record with the police department by his commanding of-ficer.

The show that revolutionized musical theatre is opening Atlanta Lyric Theatre’s 35th anniversary season. It is time to intro-duce your family to the wonders of live theater with the magic, the mystery, the memory of CATS, playing Aug. 8 - 24, 2014 at the Jennie T. Anderson Theatre (548 S. Marietta Pkwy., Marietta). Tick-ets are available by calling 404-377-9948 or by visiting www.AtlantaLyricTheatre.com.

CATS opened on Broadway on Octo-ber 7, 1982 at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York City. It continued to live up to its motto “Now and Forever” by becoming the longest running musical on Broadway on June 19, 1997 after 6,138 performances. CATS ended its 18-year run on Septem-ber 10, 2000 after 7,485 performances. It remains the second longest-running show in Broadway history, after its record was broken by The Phantom of the Opera on January 9, 2006 when Phantom celebrated its 7,486th curtain.

Based on T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, and with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, CATS won seven 1983 Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Lighting, and Best Costumes.

With direction by Ricardo Aponte and choreography by Jennifer Smiles, CATS is still revolutionary and awe inspiring.

The Lyric cast features local artists Shawn Megorden, Nick Hagelin, Jen Mac-Queen, Ansley Van Epps, Jeremy Varner, Alison Brannon Wilhoit, Robert Wayne, George Deavours, Bonnie Harris, Jamie Lea Keener, Jason Cohen, Fenner Eaddy, Natalie Rhae Goodwin, Cassandra Mora, John Streit, Brian Dixon, Jennifer Arnold, Rex Glover, and Pablina Lopez.

Master Patrol Officer Darrell Nesbit

Master Patrol Officer Darrell Nesbit of the Smyrna Police Department responded to a call at a Glendale Place apartment on July 9 in reference to an 11 month old child not breathing and unresponsive.

When MPO Nesbit arrived, he took the infant from the mother, ran outside and began administering first aid on the trunk of his patrol vehicle.

MPO Nesbit provided rescue breath-ing for the infant and after a short time the infant began to breath independently again.

“MPO Nesbit’s immediate response and heroic actions are credited to saving the infant’s life,” Smyrna Police spokesperson Christopher Graeff said in a release.

This is the 227th anniversary com-memorating the signing of the U.S. Con-stitution on Sept. 17, 1787 by 39 brave men at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

For the last four years the Consti-tution Day Committee has been able to deliver Constitutions (with flashcards and teacher lesson plans) to the 5th graders of the Cobb County and City of Marietta Schools who asked to participate. This year we are very excited to announce that we are taking the project to schools across Georgia and need your help.

Please help us provide a Constitu-tion for each 5th Grader, required by law to learn the document that Convention President, George Washington described as “…the guide which I never will aban-don.”

Contact Barbara Hickey at (404-276-0808) or [email protected] if you wish to participate by a tax-deduct-ible donation (payable to Liberty Day, a 501 c3) or are interested in delivering Constitutions to the schools.

Smyrna Firefighters have new equip-ment to help save the lives of pets in and emergency.

Although Smyrna has 5 fire stations, the department only has on pet oxygen kit.

“It has become our mission to ensure that each house, each truck, has at least 2 kits on board,” said Danielle Miller, prac-tice manager at Cat Care Vinings. ““We feel very strongly about ensuring that pets have the same opportunity to be saved in an emergent situation as their owners.” “Pets are family! Please visit gofundme.com/a7xfc8 to learn how you can help,” she said.

At Smyrna Fire Station 5 on Coooper Lake Road are, from left, Danielle Miller, Dr. Michael Friedlander, Chris and Lisa Hansen and Acting Fire Chief Roy Acree.

FIRE STATION GETS PET OXYGEN MASKSSo far, three masks have been pur-

chased by Chris and Lisa Hansen, who live near the station. They decided to spend $210 to buy the masks directly. With two pets, the couple thought purchasing the masks was the right thing to do.

Additional donations are being sought to outfit other fire stations.

MAYOR TELLS OF NEW PROJECTS IN STATE OF

CITY ADDRESSNew development is coming to the

City of Smyrna and Mayor Max Bacon suggested that residents should hear sev-eral exciting announcements in the coming weeks.

At the annual joint meeting of the Smyrna Business Association and the Smyrna Area Council of the Cobb County Chamber of Commerce July 10, Bacon delivered his annual State of the City pre-sentation.

First on the list is the former Hickory Lakes Apartments, bought by the city in 2011, razed and now named Smyrna Grove. Bacon said that the 48-acre prop-erty is under contract with Atlanta-based Southeast Capital which intends to build an estimated 190 homes projected to sell in the $300,000-plus range.

“Those are single-family, owner-occu-pied,” Bacon said, noting he expects con-struction to begin within nine months.

“We probably could have sold it to a Wal-Mart or another large retailer, and guess what you’d have in 15 years?” Bacon said. “You’d have probably an empty 100,000-square-foot box that does nothing to help the surrounding community. I think by building single-family homes, that’s going to have the same halo effect that we had down here.”

Belmont, the former Belmont Hills Propety owned by developer Jack Halp-ern is the site of 154 single-family homes being built by Houston-based David Week-ley Homes.

“I think they’ll start out in the mid-$200,000 and go up to the $400,000s, that’s according to them,” he said.

“That has really been a big plus for us because it has sort of stabilized that area, and younger families are coming because they know Smyrna Elementary is going to be a good school,” Bacon said.

Halpern has also purchased the 11-acre site at the corner of Atlanta and Spring Roads that was Jonquil Plaza. Bacon said Halpern hasn’t yet submitted plans for what he intends to do with the site.

The mayor also noted several other new building project, including:

• A new Zaxby’s being built at the corner of Atlanta and Spring Roads.

• A Sprouts Farmers Market is also under construction at the corner of the East-West Connector and South Cobb Drive.

• The annexation of Riverview Land-ing, a mixed us development on the Chat-tahoochee.

Also, as of March, the city’s bond rating by Standard & Poor’s was elevated from AA+ to AAA, the highest rating possible.

DENTISTRY HASMOVED BEYOND METAL FILLINGS

Metal silver fillings were invented in 1833. While metal silver and mercury fill-ings have saved many teeth, there have been significant advances in dental tech-nologies that make tooth colored fillings a better option to restore teeth. Modern tooth colored fillings are a space age resin called composite that is constantly being improved by manufacturers.

Silver and composite fillings age dif-ferently from one another. Silver fillings, also known as amalgam, tarnish and swell, which can cause a tooth to become stained, or in some cases, crack the tooth. The com-posite fillings will slowly dissolve back over many years and are much less likely to cause cracking or damage to the tooth.

In the modern age of dentistry compos-ites are the current best option for decay, as they are constantly being improved upon, use less toxic materials, and are more aes-thetically pleasing. They do not contain mercury and do not stain the tooth.

Doctor Vivian Hudson has spent over 20 years of her career focusing on tooth colored, modern dental technologies. 3M, ESPE, DenMat, and other dental supply manufacturers have asked Doctor Hudson to review their products for ease of use, efficiency, and reliability. In turn Doctor Hudson only uses the healthiest and high-est quality materials in her office. Her commitment to the best materials, the best techniques, and the best care make her an excellent provider to the Atlanta area.

For more information contact Dr. Vivian Hudson at 770-438-1520.

Summer Lawn Care Time!

By Paula SandersOne of the challenges that all hospice

caregivers face is to help dispel those myths and reassure patients and families about the realities of effective end-of-life care.

Consider these mistaken notions about hospice care:

Myth: Hospice is a place. Reality: Hospice is not a “place”

– it is a philosophy of care that focuses on enhancing people’s comfort and qual-ity of life during their final months of life. Hospice care can be administered at the patient’s home, hospice inpatient units as well as hospitals, nursing homes and assisted living communities or residential care facilities. It includes expert pain man-agement by treating physical symptoms, while providing emotional and spiritual support.

Myth: Hospice means giving up.Reality: Hospice care is about life,

some of the most important moments in life. Hospice aims to make life as comfortable, enjoyable and meaningful as possible. The care is provided by highly skilled, interdis-ciplinary teams of palliative care experts, including physicians, nurses, home health aides, social workers, chaplains, bereave-ment specialists and volunteers.

Myth: Hospice care is only for the very old.

Reality: People of all ages face death. Whether a patient is young or old, hospice care is customized to meet the patient’s individual needs, focusing on comfort and dignity for the patient and support for loved ones.

Myth: Hospice care is expensive.Reality: Medicare pays for hospice

services. Many states have established Medicaid coverage for hospice, and almost all private insurers and managed care plans provide coverage for hospice care as well.

For more information about hospice, contact VITAS at (404) 843-6500 or visit www.VITAS.com.

In the July 22 runoff, Cobb voters elected a Superior Court Judge from Smyrna, a new School Board member and added to the winning totals for a new U.S. Senator.

Challenger Susan Thayer won the Dis-trict 2 School Board runoff over incumbent Tim Stultz by a vote of 3.030 to 1,271. She will face Democrat Kenya Pierre in the fall.

Ann Harris of Smyrna, a prosecu-tor in the District Attorney’s office won the runoff for Cobb Superior Court Judge 30,993 to 19,260 over Juanita Stedman.

Cobb voters went for David Perdue for Senate in the Republican primary runoff over Jack Kingston to fill the seat now held by Saxby Chamblis. Perdue will face Michelle Nunn in November.

In the Republican State School Super-intendent race, Richard Woods won over Mike Buck after a recount.

Mableton Rep. Alisha Thomas Morgan won Cobb County, but lost statewide to Deca-tur educator Valarie Wilson in the Democrat State School Superintendent race.

Barry Loudermilk of Bartow County took the 11th District U.S. House race over former Rep. Bob Barr. There is no Demo-crat in the race.

CORA FISHER READY FOR 106TH BIRTHDAYCora Elizabeth Hopkins Fisher will

celebrate her 106th birthday Aug. 30 at Delmar Gardens.

Born in 1908, she has seen many things most of us only read about in his-tory books. She has lived through major wars, assassinations of political leaders, the invention of the radio, telephone, tele-vision, internet, just to name a few during her 106 years. Fisher grew up in the Grant Park neighborhood in metro Atlanta and worked as a cashier for the Georgia School System.

Fisher who was married for 68 years to Herbert Hartsfield Fisher, was the young-est of four siblings. Although she never had children, Fisher enjoyed spoiling her nieces and nephews.

As a resident of Delmar Gardens of Smyrna since 2002, Fisher has enjoyed many activities, but her favorite thing is watching the Andy Griffith Show and reli-gious programs on TV.

According to Monet Washington, Activity Director at Delmar Gardens, “Mrs. Fisher is a charming and loving resident, who participates in the many events at Delmar Gardens. Her favorite color is pink which you can clearly tell from her clothes.

She wears pink almost every day.” Residents, staff, family and friends

will be on hand to celebrate Fisher’s 106th birthday at Delmar Gardens, complete with champagne and birthday cake.

SMYRNA LITTLE LEAGUE ARE STATE CHAMPSThe Smyrna Little League 10/11 Year-Old All Star Team won the Georgia Little League State Championship on July 16, claiming the first State Title for this age group in the organization’s 60-year history. To accomplish this feat, the team won their third straight District 2 tournament held at Murphey Candler Park in Dunwoody in early July. The team then competed in the state tournament held in Cartersville with vic-tories over 4 teams including perennial Georgia powerhouses Warner Robins East in the semi-finals and Northern Columbus in the finals. Smyrna won the state champi-onship game 10-7 in the bottom of the sixth with a force out at second base. Smyrna Little League President, Jodi Rutigliano, who also has a son on the team, shared “that this is such an amazing accomplishment for our team, our park and community. It would not have happened without the hard work of our boys and coaches, and the dedication of our parents and the entire Smyrna Little League family.” Smyrna will go on to represent the state of Georgia at the Southeast Regionals, the highest level of Little League competition for their age, in Greenville, NC, beginning Aug. 2. Smyrna All Star team members from the Championship Game Night are shown from left, front, Jake Petersen, Evan Jameson, Ethan Tai, Bryce Becker, Ethan Mack, Drewbie Pinkston, Jason Warner, Colin Stewart, Dominic Rutigliano, Chase Watson, Joshua Mills and Nick Addision. Coaches, back row from left, David Watson, Dan Tai, Dell Pinkston (Manager), Calvin Addison, Peter Warner and Rob Rutigliano.
