Bonnie will be teaching two one-day workshops (which are currently filled) on November 18 th and 19 th (“Texas Tumbleweedsand Pineapple Blossom”, respectively), and will be doing a trunk show/presentation on the Scrap Saver's Systemat our November 17 th meeting. We have invited members of other Eastern Idaho guilds to attend this presentation for a suggested donation of $1.00 (one dollar) to the Quilt Heritage Museum project. There will be a lot of extra people at the November meeting, and we have a lot of activities planned, so we all need to work together to make the evening of the 17 th proceed without a hitch. You may bring ONE QUILT to show, preferably a Bonnie Hunter design if you have one. “DID WE MENTION BONNIE HUNTER?”

Way back in 2012, or perhaps it was 2013, the SRVQG Board was in the process of lining up national talent for our workshops and we decided to look into Bonnie Hunter's availability. Imagine our shock when we learned that this good lady was booked three years out!!! When we recovered from our shock we booked Bonnie for November, 2016. It seemed so far away then, but here we are!

Bonnie will be teaching two one-day workshops (which are currently filled) on November 18th and 19th (“Texas Tumbleweeds” and “Pineapple Blossom”, respectively), and will be doing a trunk show/presentation on the “Scrap Saver's System” at our November 17th meeting. We have invited members of other Eastern Idaho guilds to attend this presentation for a suggested donation of $1.00 (one dollar) to the Quilt Heritage Museum project.

There will be a lot of extra people at the November meeting, and we have a lot of activities planned, so we all need to work together to make the evening of the 17th proceed without a hitch. Bonnie's presentation lasts about an hour, and she also likes to have an additional 30 minutes for questions. This means that we will need to abbreviate the first part of the regular meeting to make sure Bonnie has plenty of time. It is still possible we will go overtime. You will notice that the meeting agenda is a little different this month. Here is what you need to know in regard to those changes:

The Ornament Exchange will occur during Early Bird instead of during the regular meeting.

The regular meeting will start at 6:55 instead of 7:00. Announcements will be extremely brief. Instead of our regular “Show-and-Tell”, we will have “Show-and-NO-

TELL”. What does this mean? You may bring ONE QUILT to show, preferably a Bonnie Hunter

design if you have one. I will read your name, the name of the quilt, and a short (one

sentence) description – whatever can legibly fit on the sign-up sheet.

You will be photographed with your quilt. There may or may not be room to display Show-and-Tell quilts.

No estimated time is listed for the Raffle, or for when we will adjourn, as it is very possible that we will run long, but it will be worth it!

With those considerations I leave you to prepare for the November meeting, Until then, keep singing!

Minutes from last meeting

SRVQG Meeting Minutes for October 20, 2016

Minutes taken by Sandra Brow

GUILD BUSINESS:

Connie Rafferty opened the meeting at 7:00 p.m.

She welcomed visitors Karen Long, Sandra McMillan, Amy Lehman and Amy’s mother Ada Benjamin.

She thanked Marei Montalvo for demonstrating the 6-minute inset circle technique at Early Bird.

Linda Hughes moved and Lana Messinger seconded that the minutes of September’s meeting be approved. Passed unanimously.

Connie and Kimberly Maher urged members to plan to come to the retreat in 2017. Kimberly will post pictures from the retreat on our Facebook page.

Laura Wallis described our new website, under construction, and asked members for input on what content should be posted, as the website has much more room than our current website. The new website is srvquiltguild.org .

Connie urged members to invite members of other guilds to attend our November meeting, at which Bonnie Hunter will be speaking. The meeting is free, but visitors not members of SRVQG will be asked to donate $1 to the Quilt Heritage Museum organization.

Connie identified Isak Dinneson (pen name of Karen Blixen) as the author of this month’s quote, and distributed fat quarters to those who knew the answer.

Kimberly Howard introduced the 2017 Quilt Show block challenge. The patterns for each 9 ½” block will cost $2 a packet, and the blocks must contain a recognizable amount of the challenge fabric.

Kat Blakely explained that since the Crackerjack challenge (bags of charity fabric to be cut into manageable portions) had been so popular, we will continue to have them available.

Linda Hughes urged all members to come to The Art Museum to see the upcoming show featuring work of Art

Collectives, including art quilts by members of Artists with a Common Thread. The opening night is Nov. 17, 5:30-7:30, and runs through January 4th.

Karen Price, chair of the 2017 guild quilt show, asked members for ideas for publicity to bring more people through the doors. She urged members to leave the week of March 20-25 free, as every member is needed to help, and the show is free on any day you volunteer to work a short shift.

Marsha Nipper had forms for the 2017 Secret Sisters. She described what the program is, and urged people to join. The 2016 Secret Sisters will be revealed at the January meeting, and new assignments will be drawn.

Diane Cresap asked people to turn in the blocks they have been working on for the 2017 Quilt Heritage Museum raffle quilt.

Laura Wallis explained the advantages of applying for a 501c(3) non-profit status for the guild, and urged everyone who had not yet voted to fill in a ballot. Ballots will be counted at the next board meeting.

SHOW AND TELL:

Several people who attended the retreat showed what they had accomplished there.

Julie Finnigan displayed her Block of the Month quilt.

Jeanette Henson, Diane Cresap, Marei Montalvo, Wendy Schoonmaker, Susan Ovard, Laura Wallis, Lexi Shell, Pam Trauber, Emily Fogg, Mimi Jones, Marlene Young, Linda Hunt, Barbara Bradley, and Jill Jensen showed quilts during Show and Tell.

After the break, Connie announced that Karen Long and Leanne Powell had signed up as new guild members.

EDUCATION:

Elizabeth Sorenson gave a talk on “How to Build a Quilt”.

Connie conducted the raffle.

The meeting was adjourned about 9:30.

Quote of the Month

“O how I laugh when I think of my vague indefinite riches.

No run on my bank can drain it,

for my wealth is not possession but enjoyment.”

November Meeting

The Ornament Exchange is during the Early Bird segment. We will begin at 6:00 pm with displaying our handmade ornaments, then we will exchange. We're so excited to see what you create this year! Please bring a small bag to put your ornament in.

Remember to pick up block patterns #3 and #4 for our "Be My Neighbor" BOM Challenge. If you ever forget to pick up patterns at the meeting, you can request them from us by email.

January Meeting

This will be the first show and tell for our BOM blocks #1-#4. We will not reveal in November so we don't take any time away from Bonnie Hunter. Every time you show your BOM blocks you will receive a fun (and useful) prize!

***

We are still collecting blocks for Penny McClure who moved away. Please make a 9.5 inch unfinished block with an owl and polka dot theme.

***

Helpful hint for the new year - make a list of the projects you want to finish in 2017. Pin it, post it, paste it where you will see your goals. It worked great for me this year. I didn't finish everything on my list, but I finished half of them. That may not sound like success, but with all the other projects that happened throughout the year I think I did great!

Workshops

Hooray! The time for Bonnie Hunter’s visit is here. Bonnie will be giving a lecture “Scrap User’s System” at our meeting on 11/17/16. She is bringing 100 pounds of quilts with her! It should be a wonderful trunk show. I need 4 volunteers to help with the trunk show, two holders and two folders. If you’d like to help, please email me at [email protected].

This machine is in great condition!

It has a lot of the "toys" we Quilters like to have, including function buttons:

It comes with a variety of feet and a color touch screen to select a stitch menu or function unit. It has several fonts for lettering, and a wide variety of stitches

It is also an Embroidery Machine. It comes with both large and small embroidery hoops plus five discs. As it is an earlier model Embroidery Machine it does not plug into a computer.

This machine sews like a dream! It is an excellent starter machine for a quilter. This is my third Husqvarna and I do love them!

Asking price is $1500.00 firm, for the machine and all the embroidery extras.
