2. THE SIRE

SNITZEL, a son of Champion Sire REDOUTE’S CHOICE, is a Group 1 winning sprinter and one of Australia’s most exciting young stallions. He was a precocious two year old who won four races in his

juvenile season (1000m to 1200m) including the Group 3 Skyline Stakes defeating STRATUM and

PARATROOPERS). He won a further three races at three including the Group 1 MRC Oakleigh Plate (beating VIRAGE DE FORTUNE, TAKEOVER TARGET, MISS ANDRETTI and STRATUM) the Group 2

Challenge Stakes and Group 3 Up and Coming Stakes.

He is currently second on the Australian Sires Premiership (by earnings) behind his sire, REDOUTE’S CHOICE despite having less runners on the track than any other stallion in the top 5. He has sired the

winners of more Australian stakes races (21) than any other sire this season.

His headline horses include G1 Cox Plate (2040m) and G1 Australian Guineas (1600m) winner

SHAMUS AWARD, Group 1 winning Sprinter SNITZERLAND and Group 1 winning 2YO SIZZLING. He is also known as a very good two year old sire with three stakes winning two year olds already this

season.

3. THE FEMALE FAMILY

BRIGHT HEROINE was twice placed in two year old stakes races in the spring of her two year old

year including a 2nd (beaten less than a length) behind Champion 2yo MERLENE in the Listed Nursery

Stakes. MERLENE went on to win her next four starts including the Group 1 Golden Slipper and

Group 1 AJC Sires Produce Stakes.

BRIGHT HEROINE’S dam FLORESCENCE (by noted 2yo sire WITHOUT FEAR) also ran 2nd in the Listed

Nursery Stakes. As well as BRIGHT HEROINE, FLORESCENCE has produced the stakes placed LOVE

AT LARGE (the dam of the Group winner INSPIRE).

BRIGHT HEROINE has produced eight individual winners including OUR JOAN OF ARC who won the

Listed Gimcrack Stakes (the first 2yo stakes race of the season) at Randwick and then won the Group

3 Maribyrnong Plate by 3 lengths. In the autumn she was third (beaten 1.6 lengths) behind WANTED

in the Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes. She has also produced the metropolitan winning and stakes

placed DOMINIC and the metropolitan winner GALACTIC GUN.

4. THE BROODMARE SIRE

BLUEBIRD (a winner of the Group 1 Royal Ascot King’s Stand Stakes) is the sire of 150 individual

stakes winners (including thirteen Group 1 winners). The majority of his progeny were at their best

over sprint distances.

His daughters have produced in excess of 1500 individual winners (66 stakes winners and 11 Group 1

winners) including METAL BENDER, UNIVERSAL PRINCE, YELL, UNIVERSAL QUEEN, MAYBE

DISCREET and THORN PARK.

5. NICKS and CROSSES

There have only been 5 runners (2 winners) bred on the SNITZEL/BLUEBIRD cross so it is too early

to see any logical patterns. The broader Snitzel over mares by Northern Dancer and his sons and

grandsons (Bluebird is a grandson of Northern Dancer) has been successful having produced the

four stakes winners including the Group 1 winner SNITZERLAND.

This filly is inbred 4 x 3 to the very good stallion STORM BIRD. There have been 88 individual

stakes winners inbred to STORM BIRD including FAINT PERFUME, MAYBE DISCREET (out of a

Bluebird mare) and Snitzel’s Pago Pago Stakes winning TIME FOR WAR.

Selection and Training

A C:C horse is likely to be a fast, early-maturing horse that on average performs better as a two-year-old than C:T or T:T horses. A C:C horse typically excels in sprints and over 90% of C:C horses are best suited to races up to and including 1 mile (1600m). C:C horses on average win their first race five months earlier than T:T horses.

C:C horses have on average 7% more muscle mass as two-year-olds than C:T or T:T horses.

C:C horses have on average 9.5% more Type IIB (fast, glycoctic) muscle fibres than T:T horses. As each horse only passes on one copy of each gene to its progeny, a C:C horse can only transmit a ‘C’ variant to its foals. Therefore, this horse can produce either C:C (sprint) or C:T (mid-distance) types in its progeny. It can never produce a T:T (staying) type horse.

EPT Elite Performance Test

Best race distance and precocity potential in Thoroughbred racehorses can be predicted by the DNA analysis of the MSTN gene, a major regulator of muscle mass development and muscle fibre type

In the MSTN gene, a position in the DNA code contains either the DNA variant C or the DNA variant T. Each individual has two copies of the gene—one inherited from the dam, one from the sire, so there are three possible genetic combinations: C:C, C:T or T:T.

Genetic Type Optimum Race Distance Precocity Breeding Implications

Equinome has developed large panels of DNA variants that can now be used to distinguish between elite performers and poor performers within each distance category, which is first determined for a particular horse using the EquinomeSpeed Gene Test. Approximately 80 genetic variants are tested for each panel.

The combination of advantageous DNA variants determines whether a horse is genetically Class 1, 2, 3, or 4 on each panel, with Class 1 having the highest potential and Class 4 the lowest potential for elite race performance. (Black Type race win)

Projected Height Test

Mature height at withers can be predicted within 2.54cm (1 inch) with a 70% success rate from birth, based on DNA analysis of the LCORL/NCAPG gene region and the sex of the horse.

At the LCORL/NCAPG gene region, a position in the DNA code contains either the DNA variant G or the DNA variant A. Each individual has two copies of the gene—one inherited from the dam, one from the sire, so there are three possible genetic combinations: G:G, G:A or A:A.

This information can be used by breeders to produce horses of a desired height more consistently. If the stallion and mare genetic types are known, the potential outcomes can be predicted as per the table below.

The potential outcomes from any breeding combination can be predicted if the genetic type of the mare and stallion are known, as shown in this table. This test can be used with current selection tools to shortlist mares and stallions most likely to produce the desired result.

The G1 Goldmine Yearling Analysis is purely pedigree based and produces 16 individual

rating scores for the range of pedigree cross-matches for each yearling. The data is based on

black-type winning results from all over the world. Each cross generates an Impact Score

(IS) rating and each rating is then color-coded to show you positive and negative ratings.

The Impact Score measures the strength of a cross between two ancestors by comparing how

many black-type winners it should have got (based on a complex and carefully calibrated

formula) to how many black-type winners it actually did get. Higher ISs should be sought by

buyers and lower ISs avoided

Red is negative and means that the pedigree cross has produced below expectations

White is neutral and means pedigree has produced at expectations

Green is positive and means that the pedigree cross has produced above expectations

YYeellllooww is super-charged and means that the pedigree cross has produced wweellll--aabboovvee

eexxppeeccttaattiioonnss

X means there is not enough data or no data for that pedigree cross

The rating & colour-coding system is there to act as a guide - yellow results show that

the pedigree match in question has produced black-type winner at a greater rate than

expected given all factors being equal. A red result shows that the pedigree (whilst

producing black-type winners) has done so at a rate lower than expected.
