for $165,000 alongside dual Group 1-winning

A softer market outlook has seen Widden Stud reduce their

2020 stallion fees by an average of 20 per cent as they look to

support their long-standing clients and loyal breeders.

Widden’s 12-strong roster is headed by flagbearer

Zoustar (Northern Meteor) and sees the introduction of his son Zousain

to the market.

“I think it’s where we are across the board,” Widden Stud owner-

proprietor Antony Thompson told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday. “We saw

early signs of it at Inglis Easter, and I think we’ll see some more adjustments as

we get into the mare sales and other pointers going forward. I think it’s a year

to be conservative. You’re seeing that across all walks of life and I think a 20

per cent reduction in our service fees is in line with what’s happening today.

“I think it’s a good way to repay the breeders who have been so

supportive of our stallions and hopefully we continue to get their support.

I feel we have something for everyone in our line-up.

“We are the only nation to have been able to continue a widespread

racing program that has allowed our major autumn carnivals to proceed

and we achieved a world first in being able to trade our premium yearlings

at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale in a virtual online format.

“Our stallions are priced this year to put breeders back on track after a

very challenging period for all of us.”

Zoustar will once again headline the Widden roster, standing at a

reduced fee of $121,000 (all GST inclusive), down 21 per cent on his fee

last season of $154,000. However, it is twice his 2018 service fee of $60,500

and comes after a season in which his best daughter Sunlight continued

to perform at the highest level. She is set to start favourite in tomorrow’s

TAB Classic (registered as Robert Sangster Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m) at

Morphettville.

“Zoustar’s credentials and statistics

are phenomenal,” he said. “With his best books to come now, if you’re

going to be breeding to him, you’re in a position where you can really

capitalise on what’s happening. He’s had another great season, not only

on the track but in the sales ring too. On the track, he’s had six Group

winners, he’s had 13 stakes winners, he’s doing it all.”

Zoustar is currently in the UK, standing at David Redvers’ Tweenhills

Stud alongside other horses to have carried the Qatar Racing claret and gold

of Sheikh Fahad Al Thani and his brothers, like Charm Spirit (Invincible

Spirit), Havana Gold (Teofilo), Hot Streak (Iffraaj) and Lightning Spear

(Pivotal). He is serving his second season in Gloucestershire, with his first

European foals receiving plenty of plaudits.

“It would be an added string to our bow if we could have success in

Europe with Zoustar,” Thompson said. “I know personally we’d get a lot

of satisfaction. He’s a horse I have enormous belief in and I think he can

work in Europe. The idea that he’s been so popular in Europe gives us

great confidence going forward.

“It doesn’t really change what happens to him down here in the

marketplace. His statistics show him to be a phenomenal young stallion.

The fact that he’s getting such a great opportunity up there at Tweenhills,

covering his second full book this year, is very exciting for us as well.”

Zoustar’s son Zousain retires to Widden Stud this season and will start

at a fee of $19,800. Zousain was a nose away in three Group 1 races - the J

J Atkins (Gr 1, 1600m), the Golden Rose (Gr 1, 1400m) and the Coolmore

Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) - and victory in any one of those races sees him

commencing his stud career off a higher mark.

“I think Zousain is great value if you look at his career in context,”

Thompson said. “He was a bob of the head off winning three Group 1s

and in three big sire-making races too - in the J J Atkins as a two-year-old

and in the Golden Rose and the Coolmore as a three-year-old. It took two

champions to beat him in Sunlight and The Autumn Sun.

“He’s a very good-looking

horse and a great option. And

there is the option for a lifetime

breeding right for those who send

two mares to Zousain the first

three years. They have proven very

popular in the past, we did it with

Written By last year and we’ll do

it for a limited number of good

breeders with Zousain.”

Tycoon) will serve their second books in 2020, having served full books at

their first attempt last year. Trapeze Artist is down 12.5 per cent to $77,000,

while Written By has been reduced by 11 per cent to $22,000.

“Last year, Trapeze Artist and Written By were very well-patronised

and we were happy with the support they received,” Thompson said.

“We’ve dropped them not because of demand

On a day in which his son Nature Strip was announced as the first

runner in this year’s The Everest (1200m) in October, Nicconi’s (Bianconi)

fee was reduced by almost 29 per cent, dropping to $27,500. His long-term

companion at Widden Stud, Star Witness (Starcraft), has been reduced

20 per cent to $22,000.

“Nicconi and Star Witness are proven options and they are great

value, especially if you are looking for a proven stallion,” he said. “I think

they have the runs on the board, they are Group 1 stallions and they are

sure to be popular.

“Nicconi has always had terrific

V ictoria’s premier stallion Written Tycoon (Iglesia) and

dual Group 1 winner Castelvecchio (Dundeel) will help

Arrowfield Stud offset the loss of grand servant Not A

Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice) and the absence of its

Japanese shuttle stallions.

Arrowfield Stud, in conjunction with Woodside Park Stud, yesterday

confirmed that Written Tycoon would relocate to the Hunter Valley to

continue his successful stallion career while John Messara also announced

the immediate retirement of three-year-old Castelvecchio.

The Richard Litt-trained Castelvecchio, who won the ATC Champagne

Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at two and returned to finish runner-up in the Cox

Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) and take out the Rosehill Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m) this

autumn, was slated to race on as a four-year-old.

But Messara, the Arrowfield Stud principal, cited the ongoing and

significant effect of Covid-19 as the reason for Castelvecchio heading to

the breeding barn later this year with a $33,000 (all GST inclusive) service

fee.

“We’ve had that twice now

where we’ve had three-year-olds

who were going on to conquer

the world (The Autumn Sun and

Castelvecchio) and we’ve had to

put them here to work because

of the premature death or we’ve

had other stallions taken out of

service,” he said.

“We invested in those horses

as long-term stallions but in both

cases it’s happened earlier than I

would have hoped.

“We had a jockey lined up in Craig Williams. Our trainer had a stable

worked out at Flemington for the Cox Plate … but he will get a second-to-

none chance this year of any first season sire because he gets all those mares

who are Danehill line and we’ve got over 300 mares here that we own.”

Not A Single Doubt, the sire of this year’s Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr

1, 1200m) winner Farnan, was pensioned earlier this year after it became

apparent he would not be able to complete a 16th covering season this

year owing to pulmonary disease, an outcome that led to Messara to chase

Written Tycoon and retire Castelvecchio.

Castelvecchio’s own sire Dundeel (High Chaparral) will remain at a

fee of $66,000 this year.

Messara said that the deal to bring Written Tycoon to NSW under an

initial one-year agreement had been in the works for a number of weeks

and as a result he expects him to be very popular with breeders.

No equity has been sold in the horse, with major shareholders

Woodside Park and Iskander Racing and Breeding committed to sending

a full complement of mares to Written Tycoon this year. He will stand for

$77,000.

“It’s the first of what could be more deals with Woodside in Melbourne.

We might have a horse that might suit their market and this horse certainly

suited us here and particularly a lot of mares we are going to support him

with,” he said.

“It’s good for everybody concerned

and I just thought that our proposition appealed to Woodside and it

represented the opening of a potential longer-term relationship between

the two farms, so I think that was attractive.”

Woodside Park Stud chief executive James Price was in no doubt

Written Tycoon - whose sire sons Capitalist, Written By and Winning

Rupert also reside in the Hunter Valley - would be well received by

commercial breeders.

“Outside I Am Invincible, he is probably the best outcross stallion we

have in this country,” he said.

“When you run second to I Am Invincible in those stakes I think you are

doing pretty well. That is obviously why John targeted him and he approached

us and we did the deal. There’s only upside for everyone, I can assure you.”

Meanwhile Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice), a probable favourite to land

his fourth straight champion sire title this year, will stand at $165,000, a

reflection of the economic conditions rather than his on-track success.

“It looks like he could win the title again this year. He is $250,000

ahead and that will make it four years in a row which will be the first time

this has happened since Danehill 25 years ago. It’s a great feat and he just

goes about his work in a very modest and humble manner,” Messara said.

“The two years sandwiched between year one and year four being his

year, they were years where his prize-money was affected by The Everest

and Redzel. You couldn’t say that in year one and you couldn’t say that

now, so he is doing it under all circumstances.”

Messara argued that Snitzel, who is in a championship battle with I Am

Invincible (Invincible Spirit) and Pierro (Lonhro) this season, had achieved

greatness despite being limited to a small segment of the mare pool.

“The interesting thing that nobody has really cottoned on to is because

he’s a dominant Danehill representative, he can’t really serve most of the

mares from that sire line,” he said.

“He is missing out on so many stakes

winners and great mares who otherwise

would have come to him. He’s one of those

horses who has had to do it without having

access to the elite mare population because

he’s by Redoute’s who’s by Danehill. It’s

amazing.”

Arrowfield Stud has Redoute’s Choice’s son Pariah entering his third

season this year, while a son of Snitzel, Showtime, enters his second year.

Shalaa (Invincible Spirit), who remains at $33,000, will also shuttle

for a fourth season from Europe this year, but Arrowfield’s Japanese

experiment has been put on hold for 12 months due to the coronavirus

pandemic.

Maurice (Screen Hero), Mikki Isle (Deep Impact) and Real Steel (Deep

Impact) will all remain in Japan this year but Messara was adamant that they

would return next year, should the Covid-19 crisis subside.

Messara, who withdrew Arrowfield’s Inglis Australian Easter Yearling

Sale draft last month as the seriousness of the pandemic started to hit to

instead offer them privately, was mindful of setting service fees that would

enable breeders to remain profitable.

“The quality of mares we get here and the end of the market we trade

in, I think breeders will continue to (send their mares to stud) after all they

will be looking at selling the produce in three years’ time,” he said.

“It’s another world now to what it was last year and it will be another

world in three years’ time. You’ve got to try and look forward.”

On Arrowfield’s 60-lot draft of yearlings who were initially set for the

Easter sale, Messara said: “We have sold two thirds of them for about 25

per cent above the sale average (of $306,290) which is not that different to

normal years for us.

“We averaged that. It was OK, but it’s not brilliant, and we’ve still got a

number of horses to sell like most breeders.”

By Tim Rowe

Woodside Park Stud sees its alliance with Arrowfield

Stud and the relocation of Written Tycoon as a sound

long-term play that could help boost the Victorian

farm and the state’s breeding industry’s sire power.

The Mark Rowsthorn-owned, Tylden-based stud, hours after the

confirmation of Written Tycoon’s move, confirmed a four-stallion roster

for the upcoming season with the promise of a potential addition in the

coming weeks.

Group 1 winner Tosen Stardom, by Japan’s late champion stallion

Deep Impact (Sunday Silence), will stand for $12,100 (all including GST),

last season’s recruit Foxwedge (Fastnet Rock) will stand for $11,000 while

shuttler Cable Bay (Invincible Spirit) ($9,900) and promising young

stallion Rich Enuff (Written Tycoon) ($8,800) round out Woodside Stud’s

2020 roster.

Woodside Park Stud chief executive James Price said the farm was

undertaking a long-term strategy to ensure breeders were able to get their

mares in foal this year during an economic slump when determining their

service fees for this year.

“To be fair, I don’t think studmasters have taken into account the

impact Covid is going to have.

This is not a six-month thing,

especially here in Victoria,”

Price told ANZ Bloodstock News

yesterday.

“Up to 40 per cent of (the

state’s) breeders are hobbyists

and, as we know, when there’s

economic downturns the first

thing to go are luxury items.

Racehorses are a luxury item, so

it’s the stallion farms who must

keep broodmare owners breeding.

If they don’t have broodmare owners, there’s no point in them having

stallions.”

Price added: “It has been a very fruitful decade for the industry and it’s

now time to support everyone. With our fees, we really think we’ve hit the

mark and that will allow people to keep breeding.”

The respected Price, a former Inglis employee who said Woodside

Park Stud was currently attempting to add another stallion to its 2020

roster, also made the case that Written Tycoon’s departure from Victoria

would benefit the stallion’s supporters.

“As CEO of any company, you have to do what is right by the owner

of the farm and the shareholders of the stallion and the figures certainly

worked out that this was the best opportunity for him,” he said.

“I think it would be short-sighted of people to say that it was a blow to

Victoria. We have entered into a new alliance with Arrowfield which we

think will be very, very good for Written Tycoon in the immediate future

but also hopefully it leads to more opportunities for Woodside and with

those opportunities it will only benefit Victoria.

“Arrowfield are the best in the business and by no means have we or

Victoria lost Written Tycoon. He is simply standing at Arrowfield for the 2020

season and let’s hope in the future that it’s not a ‘loss’ for Victoria, it’s actually

a gain in (terms of) what Victoria might receive.”

Rich Enuff, whose first crop two-year-

olds were conceived in Queensland, has sired two winners in the past

week and while Price is a realist he is encouraged by the start the stallion

has made with his progeny on the track.

“I think of the second season sires in the yearling sale ring, buyers

can very quickly drop off them and we didn’t see that with Rich Enuff this

year,” he said.

“People still wanted to buy them, so that is an excellent tick that

trainers are liking their stock.

“They’re not early, early types and they are needing a little bit of time,

whether they go shin sore or they just need to mature, but they still like them.

“I think towards the back-end of the two-year-old season and

certainly into their early three-year-old careers he might start giving us

and breeders a nice reward.”

Cable Bay’s first crop Australian-bred foals are due to race next season

and Price was also optimistic that his stock could also

make an early impression.

After an initial doubt about Cable

Bay shuttling in 2019, he said the travel

restrictions caused by the coronavirus

would not prevent the stallion from

returning to Australia this year.

“We are constantly in touch with

International Racehorse Transport and they are being very, very

supportive and constantly keeping us updated,” he said.

“Planes look like they are going to be flying to bring stallions out for

our season. There’s no reason to doubt that Cable Bay won’t be here and

he will stand for a fee of $9,900.”

The potential new acquisition, Price said, underlined Woodside’s

commitment for the Victorian industry.

“We are still looking at another horse and we will hopefully have a

decision about an offer we have made on this horse in a week or so,” he

said.

“We are certainly looking to reinvest and it’s all guns blazing in terms

of Woodside Park being a commercial stallion operation in years to come

in Victoria.”

First for Contributer

Mapperley Stud resident Contributer (High

Chaparral) landed his first winner yesterday

when Lion’s Roar (2 g ex Minnaleo by Black

Minnaloushe) took out the two-year-old

handicap (1200m) at Wagga. Trained by John

O’Shea, the gelding defeated Another One

(Super One) by three-quarters of a length. Lion’s

Roar was purchased for $65,000 by Champion

Thoroughbreds out of the Wellfield Lodge draft

at last year’s New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka

Yearling Sale and is the second winner from

three to race out of four-time winner Minnaleo.

His second dam is Avondale Gold Cup (Gr 1,

2200m) winner The Mighty Lions (Grosvenor),

who also produced Group 3 winner Vaquera

(High Chaparral). Contributer won the

Chipping Norton Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) and

Ranvet Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) in 2015 and was

crowned Champion Miler in Australia in 2014-

15. He stood at Mapperley Stud in New Zealand

for NZ$12,500 (plus GST) in 2019.

Webster extends Inglis termMark Webster has agreed to terms to extend

his tenure as Inglis Managing Director for

a further three years. He will remain in the

role until at least the end of 2023, which will

take his time in the position to 16 years. “It

has been a privilege to serve as the Inglis

Managing Director since 2007 and I am

delighted to extend my term to assist the

company through these challenging times

and to implement a number of new growth

opportunities,’’ Webster said. “With the

support of a dedicated and progressive board

of directors and a first-class management

team, I am enthusiastic to be serving the

racing and breeding industry into the future.

Innovation has been a priority during my

tenure and I can assure our customers there

is more to come.’’

Nature Strip secured for EverestAustralia's top sprinter Nature Strip (Nicconi)

has secured his spot in The Everest (1200m)

and will represent the TAB, which has posted

him as the $4 favourite. The four-time Group

1 winner, who finished fourth in the race last

year, is trained by Chris Waller and won the TJ

Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at his most recent

start. "It's really exciting to partner with TAB

who have been supporters of The Everest for

a long time. I'm confident the learnings from

Nature Strip competing in The Everest last year

will go a long way in 2020," Waller said. "With

this partnership in place, we can now build a

plan for the remainder of the year to give us the

best possible chance of success."

Boomer and Daandine combine for Inglis Digital sales topperThe largest catalogue in Inglis Digital’s

history concluded last night with a record

gross of $4.14 million and 420 lots sold, for

a clearance rate of 77 per cent. The April

Online Sale was topped by Kingstar Farm-

consigned mare Conducir (Magic Albert),

offered in foal to Capitalist (Written Tycoon)

and bought by Boomer Bloodstock/Daandine

Stud for $170,000. “It was a fantastic result

to purchase Conducir for Daandine Stud,”

Boomer Bloodstock’s Craig Rounsefell said.

“The information provided via the Inglis

Digital Online platform and the transparency

of vendor Kingstar Farm ensured my client

had the confidence to make the purchase.

I was on the phone to Daandine Stud’s

principal Jan Clark throughout the final hour

of the sale as we exchanged bids with our

competition, before coming out on top at

$170,000.”

Stokes chasing third Australasian OaksPhillip Stokes will be watching from interstate

when Selica (Makfi) strives to give the trainer

his third win in the Australasian Oaks (Gr

1, 2000m) at Morphettville. Stokes won the

Oaks in 2006 with Marju Snip (Marju), his

first Group 1 win as a trainer, and added a

second Oaks seven years later with Maybe

Discreet (Shamardal). Selica had the first

three starts of her preparation in Melbourne,

while her past two starts have been a luckless

ninth in the Port Adelaide Guineas (Listed,

1800m) and a second to Silent Sovereign

(Dalakhani) in the Auraria Stakes (Gr 3,

1800m). "She's had a good campaign leading

into this," Stokes said. "I thought her run the

other day was very good. Through no fault of

the jockey (apprentice Kayla Crowther) she

just got there a bit soon. She will handle the

step up to 2000 metres and if it's wet she will

handle that too.”

Sierra Sue set for Oaks assignment

Connections of exciting filly Sierra Sue (Darci

Brahma) are hoping the New Zealand-bred

three-year-old can continue her near-perfect

formline when she contests the Australasian

Oaks tomorrow. The Trent Busuttin and Natalie

Young-trained filly has won three of her four

career starts, with her only blemish coming

when she finished runner-up over 1600 metres

two starts back. Part-owner John O’Neill has

been thrilled with her performances and is

buoyed by Busuttin’s confidence heading into

tomorrow’s race. “Trent has always had a big

rap on the horse. I know she has worked really

well and he seems really happy with the horse,”

O’Neill said. “I know Trent is pretty confident

and the last time he was this confident was

when he was talking to me about Tagaloa prior

to the Blue Diamond.”

Street Icon chases Sangster successAfter flashing home from last to finish second

in the VOBIS Gold Sprint (1200m) last start,

the Kevin Corstens-trained Street Icon (Street

Boss) will take her chance in the TAB Classic

(registered as Robert Sangster Stakes) (Gr

1, 1200m) at Morphettville tomorrow. "She

should have nearly won the race owing to the

fact when Tom (Stockdale, jockey) snagged her

she overreacted and went right out the back,"

Corstens said. “And when you're racing against

horses like Pippie that scoot along, she gave

them too much of a start. There were Group

races in mind for her towards the end of the

autumn and I was hoping to take her up to

Queensland, but that wasn't going to be at all

easy. Plus I know a lot more people in South

Australia, so Adelaide won out."

Bella Vella deserves Group 1 opportunityAdelaide trainer Will Clarken believes his

stakes-winning mare Bella Vella (Commands)

deserves her chance at the highest level and

will contest tomorrow’s TAB Classic. Since

joining Clarken’s stable last year, the five-year-

old has won five of ten starts, including the Hills

Railway Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at her last start.

"The six furlongs is a bit of a query, but we've

changed her work around and hopefully we can

stretch her a little further," Clarken told Racing.

com. "We know she is very quick, which is her

main attribute, but I'm confident she will relax

in the run." Clarken will also be represented

by Everyday Lady (Charge Forward) in the

feature sprint for fillies and mares. "Her work

was terrific on Tuesday morning and even from

the gate she can run a cheeky race,” he said of

Everyday Lady.

Snowdens eye off J J Atkins for WildThe Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) came

up too soon for Peter and Paul Snowden’s

Inglis Nursery (RL, 1000m) winner Wild Ruler

(Snitzel), so the colt has been targeted at the J

J Atkins Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) in Brisbane and

will begin his campaign in the Cellarbrations

Handicap (1000m) on the Kensington track at

Randwick tomorrow. "It wasn't quite the right

fit for him," Peter Snowden said of the Golden

Slipper. "We always had it in our minds to go to

Brisbane. Under the circumstances it is a little

bit harder, but it was always our intention to

bring him back a bit later. He is a bit light and

immature but he has certainly furnished with

the break he had and there is a lot more of him

now than what there was early in the piece. If

he's good enough he will get his opportunity."

O’Shea to step up post-carnivalThe next phase of John O'Shea's stable rebuild

is being rolled out in the coming weeks as he

targets some of the better off-season races with a

progressive group of horses. He did not have the

firepower to feature during the Sydney autumn

carnival, so the former Godolphin trainer has

adjusted his targets and will unveil several of

his up-and-coming brigade in the weeks ahead.

Among them are fillies Intrepidacious (Shooting

To Win) and Rocha Clock (Pierro), who line up

in separate races at the Kensington meeting

tomorrow. "I didn't have any horses that were

fundamentally good enough to participate

during the autumn carnival so I just targeted

everything to be coming on post-carnival,"

O'Shea said. "Consequently, we've got some

nice horses coming through. Unfortunately,

we haven't drawn the best barriers but all the

runners are in very good order and I couldn't be

happier with them."

Minervini ready to make mark after moveHe might have underestimated the challenges

of relocating to a new state but former South

Australian trainer Mark Minervini has no regrets

about his move to Newcastle. In a sign Minervini

has found his feet, the trainer will have his

first Saturday metropolitan runners from his

Newcastle base at this weekend's Kensington

meeting. French Response (Dalakhani), a mare

bought online as an unraced three-year-old,

tackles the Coolmore Handicap (1800m), while

Calipari (Written Tycoon) lines up in the Sky

Racing Active Handicap (1000m). Both rise in

grade but the decision to test them in Sydney has

not been made lightly. "I'm normally a bit hesitant

but I don't think it's unrealistic. I think both horses

are reasonably placed," Minervini said.

Derby start hinges on Sandown performanceColin Little will decide whether to press on

towards next week’s South Australian Derby

(Gr 1, 2500m) with Vegas Knight (Declaration

of War) based on how the Bill Stutt Stakes (Gr 2,

1600m) runner-up performs in the Honouring

Victoria Police Handicap (2100m) at Sandown

tomorrow. Little planned to start Vegas

Knight last week at Morphettville but that was

abandoned after the gelding returned a poor

blood count. To compound Little's woes he has

been unable to engage a Derby jockey for Vegas

Knight. "I wanted to run in Adelaide last week

but he had a little setback and now we are faced

with the situation of running a week out from

the Derby without a (Derby) rider in place,"

Little said. “Anyway we'll see how we go on

Saturday and then make a decision after that."

Harbour Views to tackle Buffalo River

Matthew Williams has conceded his lightly-

raced gelding Harbour Views (Le Havre) might

struggle to beat fellow progresive horse Buffalo

River (Noble Mission), who has won four of his

five starts in Australia, when the pair clash in a

1400-metre handicap at Sandown tomorrow. "It

will be a tough task as I have a lot of respect for

Buffalo River," Williams told RSN927 yesterday. "I

had a horse in the race that he won at Caulfield

and he was very good there the way he did it

the hard way and just kept going. He's obviously

going to be a hard-fit horse and we're going there

on Saturday knowing that a run will help us."

The Astrologist entered for Sandown returnOff the scene since finishing second to the

talented Rubisaki (Rubick) at Flemington last

season, three-year-old The Astrologist (Zoustar)

is poised to make his return to competition in a

1200-metre handicap at Sandown tomorrow. Co-

trainer Tony McEvoy said The Astrologist had had

a couple of minor setbacks since he last raced but

the trainer is happy with the gelding, although he

might be vulnerable first-up on a heavy track after

a lengthy lay-off. "He had a pulled muscle and he's

had a sore foot, so just a combination of things,"

McEvoy said. "But it looks to all be behind him

now which is good. He is a talented horse, there's

no doubt about that. I took him to Queensland for

the Magic Millions, that's what he was showing to

me, and he couldn't put it together up there. But

he's always had ability."

Brisbane joins Seven’s national race coverageQueensland will join a national free-to-air

coverage of racing on the Seven Network

during its winter racing. But negotiations for

Sky Racing's premier station to show Brisbane

full-time on free-to-air television have stalled.

It means there will be two separate programs

showing the four winter meetings - Sky Racing

and the Seven Network, which announced

yesterday it would show Melbourne and

Adelaide racing in coming weeks with Brisbane

joining later for four days of its carnival. The

Brisbane meetings to be shown will be on May

23, May 30, June 6 and June 13. "With racegoers

unable to attend some of the traditional

highlights on the Queensland racing calendar

such as the Stradbroke, we wanted to showcase

our product across the nation to as many

people as possible," Racing Queensland chief

executive Brendan Parnell said.

Wisdom Of Water to return at Gold CoastThe Toby and Trent Edmonds-trained Wisdom

Of Water (Headwater), who was last seen

finishing fourth in the Magic Millions 2YO

Classic (RL, 1200m), will return to the races

at the Gold Coast today. "He has always had a

heap of raw ability and he has come back from

a spell a stronger horse," Trent Edmonds said.

"But for all that I still reckon there is plenty of

improvement in him. I think you will see an

even better horse as a three-year-old.” Wisdom

Of Water is being aimed at the Ken Russell

Memorial (Listed, 1200m) or Champagne

Classic (Listed, 1200m) before a tilt at the J J

Atkins Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) on June 6. "Like

everyone else we are waiting to see if there are

any changes to travel restrictions," Edmonds

said. “The main thing is we all obey the

biosecurity regulations whatever they may be."

The Odyssey to overcome tricky barrierKelly Schweida hopes a big weight advantage

can help The Odyssey (Better Than Ready)

overcome a tricky barrier as the gelding moves

closer to becoming a millionaire. The gelding

has earned $920,000 from his seven wins and

four placings from 16 starts and in a typical

three-year-old handicap would carry about

62 kilograms. With apprentice Stephanie

Thornton's 1.5-kilogram claim, The Odyssey

will carry 56.5 kilograms under the conditions

of tomorrow’s 3YO Plate (1200m) at Doomben.

Schweida knows that is a big plus but is still

worried by barrier seven. "There are a couple

speedy horses drawn inside him which can

make it hard from there," Schweida said. "These

three-year-olds are usually the best races in

Brisbane each week and this one is no different.

But on his form he does look well placed. His

form is good at the track and distance and he is

one a bit of rain won't hurt."

Winning is uncomplicated for KendrickCaloundra trainer Stuart Kendrick may reach

900 career wins this weekend with his filly

Uncomplicated (Akeed Mofeed) leading the

way at Doomben. Kendrick posted his 64th

winner of the season and his 897th overall when

All To Do (All Too Hard) won at the Sunshine

Coast on Wednesday. He will saddle eight

runners at the Sunshine Coast on Friday night

and four at Doomben. The addition of blinkers

is hoped to improve Uncomplicated, who lines

up in the QTIS 2YO (1350m) at Doomben,

after a solid effort last time out when third to

Sizzlepel (Sizzling) last Friday. “She should be

able to race closer to the pace. You are no hope

if you give away a huge start at Doomben and

especially in a two-year-old race,” Kendrick

said. “She really has a big finish and there does

look to be some pace in the race.”

Thornton approaches milestoneApprentice Stephanie Thornton has a strong

book of rides at Doomben in a bid to chase

another career milestone. Thornton is on the

cusp of joining an elite group of apprentice

jockeys to have outridden their metropolitan

claim. Her win on Just Orm (Falvelon) at the

Sunshine Coast last Saturday was her 79th win

at a city meeting, leaving her just one win short

of losing her 1.5 kilogram claim. Thornton has

experienced plenty of success since arriving

from Victoria last year on temporary loan to

trainer Steve O’Dea of Eagle Farm. “Every

apprentice wants to outride their allowance

and moving here has been terrific,” she said.

Thornton has ridden 205 winners in total - 45

metropolitan winners in her adopted state, 33

in Victoria and one in Adelaide.

Irish Songs gives Goldman Wagga Town PlateFour-year-old Irish Songs (Shamus Award)

fulfilled a long time ambition for his trainer

Kurt Goldman by winning the $160,000 Wagga

Town Plate (1200m). Goldman was confident

of his gelding’s chances and he did not

disappoint, sprinting to a one and a quarter

length win on the heavy track. “I snuck into

this racecourse when I was about 17 years old,

underage,” Goldman told Sky Thoroughbred

Central. “I’ll admit it. I was drinking. I was

gambling. I was running through the betting

ring thinking I knew everything. It’s the only

race I’ve ever wanted to win. People say, what’s

the one race? And this Town Plate is something

I’ve been chasing for 16 years. I’ve never had a

runner in it. We thought about putting Eckstein

(I Am Invincible) here. We had Hellbent (I Am

Invincible) one year, we could easily have gone

down that path. But I knew I had the right horse

today.”

Weight fails to halt The Harrovian North Queensland’s top horse The Harrovian

(Fastnet Rock) shouldered 67 kilograms to

victory in a 1400-metre open handicap at

Cairns yesterday. The Stephen Massingham-

trained six-year-old has won nine of 11 starts

since moving north, including a trio of $150,000

races; the Townsville Cup (2000m), Cairns Cup

(2100m) and Cairns Amateur Cup (2100m).

Conceding at least 11.5 kilograms to the rest

of the field, The Harrovian never looked in

too much doubt, defeating Via Balciano (I Am

Invincible) by a length and a half.

Strong entries for two-day Bool carnivalThe all-jumps program to open the condensed

Warrnambool carnival has attracted strong

entries in six races. The May three-day

carnival has been shortened this year due to

Covid-19 restrictions and opens on Tuesday

featuring the Grand Annual Steeplechase

(5500m), Australia’s longest race. Gold Medals

(Elvstroem) and Zed Em (Zed), who shared the

quinella in the last two runnings of the race, are

at the top of the weights. Zed Em is up three

kilograms on last year’s win to 73 kilograms and

Gold Medals, the 2018 winner, meets Zed Em a

kilogram and a half better off than when second

last year on 69.5 kilograms. Both are also

entered in the Brierly Steeplechase (3450m),

which received 23 entries - 16 of whom are

also entered in the Grand Annual. Day two on

Wednesday is an all-flat program, featuring the

Warrnambool Cup (Listed, 2350m), which has

attracted 30 nominations.

Chatswood Stud announce feesChatswood Stud have reduced their service fees

for 2020 in a response to market forces. Reward

For Effort (Exceed And Excel) will stand his

tenth season at a fee of $11,000 (inc GST). The

sire of 113 individual winners in 2018/19, he

appears on track to reach another three-figure

tally this season. Inference (So You Think), who

covered over 100 mares in his second season,

will stand for $6,600 (inc GST). Greg Willis of

Chatswood Stud said: “This will obviously be a

challenging season for our industry. Chatswood

has built a client base by standing stallions

for 49 years and I hope these fee reductions

help keep breeders motivated enough to keep

doing what they love. Both Reward For Effort

and Inference have never covered less than

100 mares per season and I am confident their

value will ensure that remains the case in 2020.”

Vale Diane NeylonPedigree expert Diane Neylon was farewelled

last week, having died at the age of 72 after

a battle with cancer. The Queensland-based

Neylon was most well-known for advising the

mating of Danehill Dancer (Danehill) with

Lisheenowen (Semipalatinsk), which resulted

in three-time Group 1 winner Private Steer. She

also recommended the mating of Invincible

Spirit (Green Desert) and Cannarelle (Canny

Lad) that resulted in champion sire I Am

Invincible. Neylon also recommended the

purchase of five-time Group 1 winner Racing To

Win, the cheapest Encosta De Lago (Fairy King)

ever to go through the Inglis Australian Easter

Yearling Sale, while other recommendations

included Hong Kong Group 1 victor Seasons

Bloom (Captain Sonador) and Sandown

Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) winner So Swift (Barely

A Moment).

Akatino bound for Australia

German three-year-old Akatino (Sidestep), a

24-length winner at Dortmund in February, has

been sold to OTI Racing and trainer Matthew

Smith. Akatino is currently spelling in the

German city of Warendorf while awaiting a

flight to Australia. "The horse came to our

attention at the end of his two-year-old season,

but the trainer was a bit unsure about selling

him," Smith told Racing.com. "Then he came

out and won by the big margin a few weeks

before racing stopped in Germany so we went

back and said, 'Would you consider an offer?',

and because racing had stopped they were

probably happy enough to sell. So, I'm pleased

we've been able to negotiate a deal, I'm really

looking forward to training him, he's a lovely

horse." Akatino has won two from six.

Kemalpasa unlikely for GoodwoodThe TAB Stakes (registered as Linlithgow

Stakes) (Gr 2, 1200m) winner Kemalpasa

(Magnus) is likely to miss The Goodwood (Gr 1,

1200m) on his home track, Morphettville, after

he pulled up scratchy following a disappointing

effort in the R N Irwin Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m)

last month. "He has strained a muscle in his

shoulder and we've kept him quiet since the

Irwin," co-trainer Richard Jolly told Racing.

com. "It is a longshot at this stage of getting to

him The Goodwood, but we will know more

this time next week." One confirmed runner for

the yard is Hard Empire (Hard Spun), who ran

fourth in the race last year and has been placed

in stakes grade at his last two outings. "We're

going to pop the blinkers back on and roll the

dice with him again in the big race," Jolly said.

"His best chance is if we get a wet track, but he

is such an honest horse."

(plus GST) in 2020. The first of Wrote’s southern

hemisphere yearlings went through the sales

ring at the Karaka Yearling Sale this year and

were well received by buyers, averaging over

NZ$60,000 in Book 2. Meanwhile in Florida,

where he served a low number of mares of

limited quality, Wrote has already produced an

impressive 54 per cent winners from starters

on both dirt and turf over sprint distances.

Highview have encouraged breeders to book

in early as Wrote will only be covering a limited

book of 100 mares this year.

$15,000 flat stakes level for JulyNew Zealand Thoroughbred Racing yesterday

announced that all 13 meetings to be held in

July will feature a flat stakes level of $15,000.

They also announced that payments would

be made back to 14th placing in order to

distribute prize-money more widely, while no

nomination or acceptance fees will be taken.

All races will be special conditions open entry

races, meaning that any horse is able to enter,

in order to give more horses an opportunity to

race if desired. Racing is scheduled to begin

again on July 3.

Laking’s essential lockdown experienceWhile most New Zealand jockeys were confined

to their own bubble during the five-week

Covid-19 lockdown under Level 4 protocols,

Canterbury rider Jason Laking was able to

operate as per normal. The 37-year-old holds

down a full-time job at feed company Midlands

Seeds with his role deemed essential by the

government. “I have been pretty lucky because

I have got a full-time job as well,” he said. “I

press hemp and flax seed for oil at Midlands

Seeds. There are not a lot of us who work here,

so it’s pretty easy to keep our distance. I have

my end and they have got their end, so it has

worked out pretty well. I am going to head up

to Riccarton on Saturday and slowly get into it

because I haven’t ridden a horse in five weeks

and the weight has gone through the roof.”

Helene Leadingstar faces Moore assault in Queen MotherThe 2018 South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m)

winner Helene Leadingstar (Wanted) will aim

to make it three on the trot in Hong Kong when

he tackles Sunday’s Queen Mother Memorial

Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) at Sha Tin. Tony Cruz’s

charge has pulled off a smart turn-around in

form, having endured 14 runs without success

before nailing a breakthrough Hong Kong win

over 1800 metres at the beginning of March. He

followed up with a 2000-metre Class 1 score a

month later under this weekend’s pilot, Karis

Teetan. “He’s got a big chance,” Cruz said. “He’s

won two races already and I’m very happy with

him leading into this. I was really pleased with

his barrier trial and I expect him to show us his

ability over the mile and a half, he’ll see out

the distance easily.” Cruz is the only non John

Moore-trained runner in the field of five.

Stunning rival D B Pin retiresGroup 1 winner D B Pin (Darci Brahma) is the

latest Hong Kong retiree after last weekend’s

Champions Day. The John Size-trained D B

Pin has been officially deregistered by the

Hong Kong Jockey Club, with his former

stablemate and long-term foe Mr Stunning

(Exceed And Excel) also set to be deregistered

in the coming days. D B Pin first gained

headlines in October, 2016, when he scored

his first “win” only for the race to be declared

void due to a misplaced rake in the barriers.

However, he worked his way through the

grades, taking the 2018 Centenary Sprint Cup

(Gr 1, 1200m) and finishing second twice

to Mr Stunning in the Hong Kong Sprint

(Gr 1, 1200m). He retires having finished

eighth behind the Frankie Lor-prepared Mr

Stunning in the Chairman’s Sprint Prize (Gr

1, 1200m) last weekend.

Churchill Downs preparing for racing againChurchill Downs will open stables at the

racing and training centre in phases before

racing begins during its spring meeting

without spectators. The Kentucky Derby (Gr

1, 10f ) has been postponed from May 2 to

September 5 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

It will be the first time since 1945 the race

will not be run on the first Saturday in

May. The spring meeting was scheduled to

begin last Saturday, but a statement from

Churchill Downs has said that Kentucky

state officials approved opening the stables

from May 11, albeit under strict guidelines.

The track’s plan includes masks being worn

before entering and at all times on the

grounds, Covid-19 testing and screening and

colour-coded wristbands for everyone on

the ground to validate screening. Kentucky

governor Andy Beshear called the plan “one

of the most detailed we have seen about

specific security checks that everybody has

to go through and be temperature-checked,

to masking, to having a very limited group

that is there.

Ricky Yiu’s steady, unwavering

progress towards what he

hopes will be a first trainers’

championship continued at Happy

Valley on Wednesday thanks to Shining Gem’s

(Makfi) darting late burst.

Vincent Ho’s cool head had the top-

weight positioned for a sprint finish off the

turn in section two of the Class 3 Causeway

Bay Handicap (1200m) and Shining Gem did

not disappoint. The four-year-old’s length and

a quarter supremacy gave Yiu his 53rd win this

term and a six-win advantage over his nearest

pursuer.

“He’s a very genuine type, he showed

as a three-year-old last season that he had

potential to win races. We always had quite

high expectations for him and now he moves

into Class 2, he’s a nice, genuine type,” Yiu said.

“The draw (one) helped today – last time

he was drawn wide – and he’s consistent. When

Vincent asked him, the acceleration was there.”

Ho, who landed his first Group 1 win on

Southern Legend (Not A Single Doubt) in

Sunday’s FWD Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m),

moved onto 52 wins in what is already his best

ever season by some margin.

Moreira maintains leadJoao Moreira maintained a slender three-

win advantage over jockeys’ premiership rival

Zac Purton, with both landing doubles to end

the evening 109 wins to 106.

Moreira struck first when Victorious Seeker

(Sebring) matched Gold Velvet’s (Savabeel)

1800-metre Class 5 record – set just two months

ago – in the card’s second contest, the Wan Chai

Handicap. The Paul O’Sullivan-trained four-

year-old clocked 1:49.33.

The Brazilian increased his haul when

Simply Fluke (Keeper) made it two wins in

as many runs since his switch to the Douglas

Whyte stable, with both successes coming

under Moreira and both from the widest gate

of all, 12. The five-year-old charged home from

the tail to take the Class 4 North Point Handicap

(1200m) by three-quarters of a length.

“I just allowed him to find his own rhythm.

We know he’s got a good turn-of-foot and he’s

the type of horse that if he gets there a bit too

early he can lose concentration. He felt that way

last start when he won,” Moreira said.

“He built up a good momentum, they went

quite fast in front and they were always going

to be coming back for me on the home straight.

His last section of the race was really good and

he might win another one.”

Purton keeps tabs with twoPurton was not to be outdone though in

his battle to keep the title he’s won for the past

two seasons – both riders have captured the

Hong Kong title three times. The Australian

scored easy wins on Happy Warrior (More Than

Ready) and Sky Show (Showcasing).

The Jimmy Tung-trained Sky Show

exhibited smart potential with a two-length

score in section one of the Class 4 North Point

Handicap (1200m). The three-year-old clearly

took benefit from his debut last month.

“He’s a nice horse and physically he looked

well. He came out of Conghua trials where

there was no pressure so he went to the races

on debut a bit big, he had that competitive run

and a good trial and that just brought him on,”

Purton said.

Purton had earlier positioned Happy

Warrior to stalk Focus (Per Incanto), a reluctant

leader in the Class 4 Quarry Bay Handicap

(1650m), and quickened on by the eventual

second down the straight to pass the post a

coasting three quarters of a length ahead.

On a night of doubles, that sealed an early-

card brace for trainer John Moore.

“Drawing the plum gate (one), getting the

gun run and having the horse with the speed

to hold that position, they were the key factors.

Zac said to me, ‘You must have been jumping

up and down going to the corner’ because he

was going so well,” Moore said.

“He hit the line strongly, it was a cheeky

win and that will put him in Class 3 down the

bottom. He deserved that win.”

The handler took the opener, the Class 4

Tai Hang Handicap, with Gala Night (Dissident)

who set a new Class 4 record time for 2200

metres of 2:16.06. The three-year-old rallied

gamely for Derek Leung after Bullish Glory

(Roderic O’Connor) edged the lead but lacked

the necessary conviction through the final 100

metres.

“That was ridden to perfection with respect

to Derek following instruction. I told him what

I wanted – the horse is suspect at 2200 (metres)

if he’s in front, so I wanted him to get in the box

seat, get into the slipstream and I believed he’d

get the trip here. It was a beautiful ride and the

horse was in for the

fight.”

Leung also

headed home with

two wins on the

board when Irish

import Delightful

Laos (Baltic King)

opened his Hong

Kong account at the

first attempt. The

Tony Cruz-trained

three-year-old won

a Dundalk maiden

by more than two

lengths last October and suggested a bright

future with a length and a quarter score tonight.

“It’s his first run here and that was the first

time I’d sat on him but he gave me a good feel,

he raced with maturity and I think he has a

good future,” Leung said.

Meanwhile, O’Sullivan added to

Victorious Seeker’s win when Acclaimed Light

(Acclamation) responded to Neil Callan’s

powerful drive and landed section two of the

Class 3 Fortress Hill Handicap (1650m).

Dylan Mo arrowed the Me Tsui-trained

Good For You (Thorn Park) on an overhauling

run that saw him power to a two and a quarter

length triumph in the finale, section one of the

Class 3 Causeway Bay Handicap (1200m).

MAIDEN OF THE WEEK

| 22 |

Last week, when Sauvestre

(Hinchinbrook) was named Maiden

of the Week, the suggested rule of

thumb was to watch for all Chris

Waller-trained two-year-olds, especially those

on the path to the J J Atkins (Gr 1, 1400m).

Saffiano looks very much in a similar mould

to Sauvestre and seems to be a horse capable of

heading towards the Atkins after his win in the

Clarendon Stakes, a 1400-metre handicap, at

the transferred Hawkesbury meeting at Rosehill

last weekend.

The More Than Ready (Southern Halo)

juvenile became the first Waller winner of

the Clarendon Stakes or its equivalent since

Zoustar (Northern Meteor) in 2013. Zoustar

progressed to win the BRC Sires’ Produce

Stakes (Gr 2, 1350m) before finishing second

to Romantic Touch (Northern Meteor) in the J

J Atkins, that year over its regular 1600 metres.

Saffiano debuted with a fifth to Ocean

Emperor (Written Tycoon) over 1100 metres on

the Kensington track. That day, he settled last

and made ground late.

However, stepping up to 1400 metres, he

was able to sit closer and he proved too tough in

the finish, defeating previous maiden winners

Formentera (I Am Invincible) and Rock My

Wand (Wandjina) by a head and a length and a

half respectively.

"He is a promising horse, this one. We have

taken our time with him,” Waller said. “He is

a typical Aquis two-year-old, they are doing a

great job and have ready-made horses.”

“We have been a little bit patient with him.

He is a horse that has appreciated that time.

He is going to go and have a bright future. He

finished off very strongly on the Kensington

track which is never easy to do. He has come

through it well.

“Even today he was a little bit wobbly up

the straight. He had to be good to pick up the

last 100m and once he did get in the clear he

quickened really well.

"There are two reasons you look up to

Brisbane, obviously prize-money is one thing

and the status of a Group 1 JJ Atkins. Also

timing though, getting them up into the warmer

climate seems to be a good springboard for a

three-year-old, so I'd say we'd follow a similar

path."

Bred by Aquis Farm, Saffiano is the first foal

out of the unraced Domesday (Red Ransom)

mare Black Prada. She comes from a well-

known Woodlands family, with Black Prada

a half-sister to four-time Group 1 winner

Appearance (Commands) and stakes winner

Mascareri (Commands), both who carried the

Darley maroon throughout their careers.

Sent through the Magic Millions Gold Coast

Yearling Sale as part of the Newhaven Park

draft, Aquis Farm bought him back for $600,000

after a spirited bidding duel.
