Writing a Good Personal Statement

• Do not start the Personal Statement with words

of wisdom or a quote from Florence Nightingale

• Focus on the course applied for - any applicant who implies that if they cannot be a nurse they would be happy to be a midwife/paramedic will be rejected

• Identify key transferable skills from your current role, life experience or voluntary work

• Avoid talking about very personal experiences. Some midwifery applicants discuss their own birthing experience or breastfeeding

• Identify how you will cope with the demands of a Degree. This may include insight or reflection on your learning and academic journey so far

Page 23: Snm nursing a-level - open day 2012 -final

• A good supportive reference will reflect the applicant’s Personal Statement

• If an applicant says they are friendly and outgoing it creates a good impression if the referee uses similar phrases

• A statement on time-keeping, commitment, attendance and reliability

• How the applicant is coping with the academic demands of current course

• If the referee foresees any issues or weaknesses that may affect the applicants transition from HE to university
