SPDSA is Developing a Competitive Program for our players to continue after Youth

One of the SPDSA’s Strategic Imperatives is “To promote soccer as a sport

that can be played by all ages…” and we are intending to make good on that

by providing an Adult stream of competitive soccer for our Phoenix players

when their Youth Career comes to an end. The SPDSA has offered Adult

Recreational programs for a number of years but is still in the development

stages of creating a strong competitive adult pathway.

The Phoenix Ladies team is forming the building blocks of this development,

currently competing in division 1 of the EDSA league.

It started as the team was coming toward the end of their youth careers and players started to think “What do we do when it’s

over?”

The SPDSA managed to get a spot in the EDSA and those 16-18 year olds still left in the Phoenix Program were given a pathway

for their future in Women’s soccer. With a strong core the team is looking to build on what has been a successful transition into

the Women’s game this outdoor season. The jump from youth to adult has taken some time but the team is starting to show

plenty of promise, especially after a very successful tournament in Kimberley, B.C. The squad went down with a roster

completely made up of youth players and were up against highly skilled, older and competitive women’s teams. The Phoenix

Ladies showed their potential making it to the Semi-Finals. The Coaching staff and team considered this tournament to be a

success and hope that it paves the way for great results to end the outdoor season.

The team was joined by some former players who have joined University programs and their affiliate premier teams and it was

encouraging to see a reunion of past teammates and friends. The trip was encouraging and the team plans to make this an

annual trip.

For more information about our Adult Phoenix program contact Debbie ([email protected]) and for more information on the

Phoenix Ladies team and how you can get involved contact Coach Lee ([email protected]).

SPDSA Annual General Meeting An opportunity to learn about the SPDSA and become active in the Association

P A G E 4

The Strive for Excellence Camp hosted by the SPDSA from July 6

-10 was extremely successful.

With 126 participants this year the Millennium fields were

buzzing with red shirts throughout the week. The participants

displayed great enthusiasm in furthering their development

under some great Coaches.

A BIG Thank You to our Volunteer Camp Counsellors who

throughout the week helped our Coaches with the

organization, set-up and take-down of activities and camp

equipment.

COACHES SYMPOSIUM

The SPDSA in conjunction with the Strive for Excellence Camp

also hosted their annual Coaches Symposium, free to all current

SPDSA Coaches. The evening was a great opportunity to learn

from some of the top Coaches in the Country (Rob Gale - U20

Canadian Coach, Patrick Tobo - Ontario Development Coach

and Lloyd Barker - Former Montreal Impact player and

Sportsnet Analyst).

The evening ended with a Coaches social at Average Joes where

Coaches could discuss different methods, drills and approaches

to coaching with their peers.

Camp Provides Positive Experiences

Strive for Excellence Camp Another great camp with 126 Part icipants

The following is an email received from parents that brought their son from Camrose to the Strive for Excellence Camp.

“My son attended your camp just recently and I wanted to say how impressed we were with how friendly, organized and well run it was. Can’t say enough about the

amazing coaching and guidance that the kids received all week. Loved the lunch break talks and wished I had been able to stay and listen to more. My son was in the U10 boys and we are not from your association, so he was more than a little nervous and being a bit on the quieter side it was a big stretch for him to be there. On the 2nd morning, I mentioned it to the young man that was one of the counselors for the U10’s and when I picked my son up that afternoon he said that the counselor really made him feel welcome and part

of the group. So I wanted to say a big thank you to that young man. He really impressed me with his effort and discretion so I wanted to pass that on as well.

Thank you for the opportunity for other kids from outside your association to be able to register and experience such an awesome camp!” Thanks so much for the positive feedback!

SPDSA Coach of the Week

How to Nominate your

Team or Coach

Does your team deserve

recognition? Has your

Coach created a positive

environment for the

team?

Nominate Your Team

Nominate Your Coach

Congratulations to the following Coaches for their hard work. Each Coach of the Week will receive a gift card from Press’d Sandwiches and Exist Cycle.

Age Group of the Team: U16 Boys Tier 4 (Lopatynski) Please explain why you feel this Coach should be

awarded the Coach of the Week: Randy has been coaching in the program for a number of seasons and has taken on an extra volunteer role as an age-group coordinator for the SPDSA. Randy always goes above what is required, giving his teams custom logos each season. He is a

dedicated coach that is always able to bring a team together very quickly. His U16 boys team this season captured Bronze in the “Classic Tournament” and represented Sherwood Park at the U14 Tier 4 Rural Provincials. Nominated By: Owen MacPherson Age Group of the Team: U14 Boys - Tier 2 Phoenix (Mark Sandle & Matt Gresiuk)

Please explain why you feel this Coach should be awarded the Coach of the Week: We have been practicing 2x a week and 2 games a week. My mom drives me from Camrose to practices and Mark and Matt are always there and show respect to myself and the other players on the team. They work us hard but I also enjoy coming to practcies and playing for them. Nominated By: Deanna Peters Age Group of the Team: U14 Girls - Tier 2 Phoenix (Ballam)

Please explain why you feel this Coach should be awarded the Coach of the Week: I would like to nominate our Coach, Lee Ballam for Coach of the Week. Lee coach’s our girls’ U14T2 team, the U18 Girls T1 team, and teaches Academy. I have no idea where he finds the time for all this but his level of commitment as a coach is staggering- bar none. He consistently presents them with new drills, challenges them, brings them out of their comfort zone, and always makes them laugh. After tournaments he takes the time to email the team and provide constructive feedback, recognizing their efforts and encouraging where there is room for improvement. He helps foster the love of the game in them. The success of these teams are a direct result of his efforts.

In recognition for the outstanding contributions of our Coaches

SPDSA Team of the Week

Congratulations to the following teams for the efforts so far this outdoor season. Each player on the team will receive a Game-Day voucher for an FC Edmonton game and a coupon to Nitza’s Pizza.

Age Group of the Team: U16 Girls Tier 4 (Ford) Please explain why you feel this team should be awarded the Team of the Week: Norm Ford has been coaching with the SPDSA for a number of years now and is always committed to bringing the best out of every

player. The team represented the SPDSA at the U16 Tier 4 Rural Provincials this outdoor season and captured Bronze by defeating Athabasca 3-2. Congratulations on a great season! Age Group of the Team: U18 Boys Tier 4 (McCullough) Please explain why you feel this team should be awarded the Team of the Week: The U18 Boys Tier 4 team had an excellent season this year, finishing top of their division in EMSA. The team continued their success into the ASA Tier 4 Rural Provincials with the team narrowly missing out on the Gold, losing 2-1 to Lacombe in the Final. Congratulations on an outstanding season! Nominated By: Deanna Peters Age Group of the Team: U14 Girls Tier 2 Phoenix (Ballam)

Please explain why you feel this team should be awarded the Team of the Week: I would like to nominate our U14T2 Girls for team of the week. This season our girl’s skills have improved remarkably. They worked hard and won medals in every tournament they’ve entered. Throughout the summer these young ladies exhibited excellent perseverance, determination, and sportsmanship. Some girls played entire games when we were short players. When the chips were down they lifted each other up. Week after week these girls demonstrate commitment to each other and passion for the game through hours of practice, fitness sessions and games. They are a great example of team spirit and play soccer for the love of the game. Age Group of the Team: U14 Boys Tier 3 Phoenix (Ricketts) Please explain why you feel this team should be awarded the Team of the Week: The Tier 3 Boys team has continued to improve and develop throughout the outdoor season. The team is anxious to learn and improve, often booking additional sessions with technical staff for further development. The team continues to work hard and is looking to peak at the right time with Provincials coming up in August. The team was awarded for their steady improvement by capturing a Silver medal at the K-Days Kickoff tournament.

Recognizing the outstanding contributions by teams to game of soccer in Sherwood Park

Members of the SPDSA had a unique opportunity to participate as Human Foosball

players during the Canada Day Celebrations at Festival Place on July 1st.

The Human Foosball game was a great success with players acting as Foosball pieces,

unable to run up and down the field, but rather confined to their specific spot on the pole.
