National Volunteer Week Winners Three Volunteers selected for their outstanding contributions to soccer in Sherwood Park

The SPDSA took the initiative to be part of the National

Volunteer Week in Canada in order to celebrate the hard

work and dedication of volunteers that make soccer in

Sherwood Park so successful. The SPDSA collected

nominations between April 12 - 18 and selected three

recipients for the first annual Sherwood Park Volunteer

Awards.

Michelle Chambers

Volunteer Roles: Age Group Coordinator - (Currently U10

Boys and Girls, U12 Boys) Coach - (Currently U10 Boys),

Manager - (Currently Women’s S.P. Devlin Strikers)

Nominated By: Tammy Parker

Reason: They are always available for questions or help.

They never fail to volunteer their time for the kids and do so

as a family. They bring their experience and passion for the

game to the pitch and are willing to spend their personal time

helping others.

Michelle has always offered to volunteer her time for the

betterment of soccer in Sherwood Park. The SPDSA was

desperate for Age-Group coordinators and Michelle took on

three age groups and has been extremely organized and is

always very quick to answer any emails/questions arising. She

has coached for a number of seasons, and is currently

coaching in the U10 Boys Community program. Michelle is

also working hard to grow Women’s soccer in Sherwood Park.

She is currently playing with and acting as the team Manager

for the Sherwood Park Devlin Strikers.

Susan MacNeil

Volunteer Roles: Team Manager - (Currently U8 Girls, U10

Girls Jr Phoenix, Classics League Director

Nominated by: Brenda Vos

Reason: Susan has volunteered her valuable time and

worked tirelessly on all the teams her husband Ian has

coached. With three daughters in soccer, that's a lot of

teams! Not only does she keep her teams organized, she's

always willing to lend a hand to other teams as well. Even

with her busy schedule Susan found the time to organize and

develop Sherwood Park's first ever Ladies Classics League; she

also signed up to play and manage one of the teams in the

league. Susan is a true team player in every way; as a player

her sportsmanship made the game more enjoyable for those

of us who played with and against her and as as a manager,

her commitment and dedication has kept the teams running

like well-oiled machines which in turn is more enjoyable for

the players, coaches and parents. I would like to recognize

and celebrate Susan MacNeil for her commitment, energy

and dedication to bettering soccer in Sherwood Park.

Lynette Brault

Volunteer Roles: Team Manager - (Currently U14 Tier II Girls,

U16 Tier II Girls)

Nominated By: Christine Kennerd

Reason: Lynnette spends a huge amount of time working to

make our team run smoothly. Despite changes in coaching

staff over the past few years she has efficiently worked with

each member of the coaching staff. She is very professional

and discreet in all her dealings with parents and handles

difficult situations with poise. Most importantly, Lynette puts

our girls first in all that she does. She makes sure every

possible detail is covered to ensure the players are well cared

for and have fun while developing skills. She is so devoted to

the team that she continues to organize events even when

she is on holidays! We are truly fortunate to have her.

The SPDSA would like to congratulate our three selected

volunteers and thank all those who submitted a nomination.

SPDSA Team of the Week

Congratulations to the following teams for the efforts so far this outdoor season. Each player on the team will receive a Game-Day voucher for an FC Edmonton game and a coupon to Nitza’s Pizza. Nominated By: Teresa Fines Age Group of the Team: U8 Boys TT Team 8 - Belcham Please explain why you feel this team should be awarded the Team of the Week: This

team not only tries hard during practice but also during the games. On Thursday's game last week, a player on the other team accidentally got hurt. The boys on the team stopped playing and all took a knee waiting for the injured players mom and coach to come check him out. Once it was determined that the player was okay, the team gave the ball to the opposing team to start play again. This team showed a valuable lesson in sportsmanship and should be rewarded as you don't see it very often.

Nominated By: Vera Milligan Age Group of the Team: U10 Boys Team 12 - Baker Please explain why you feel this team should be awarded the Team of the Week: This group of boys has had a tough season so far with only one win almost half way through the season. That being said though- they are an enthusiastic group of boys encouraging each other and giving it their all. They are learning lots and improving and being the team of the week would be an amazing pick me up after a tough tournament this past weekend and season so far. I would love to see these guys be the team of the week and give them that extra encouragement at how well they are doing and there is lots of season left. Can't think of a more deserving bunch:) Nominated By: Deana Breum

Age Group of the Team: U12 Boys Team 2 - Breum Please explain why you feel this team should be awarded the Team of the Week: I would like to nominate the Titans for their exceptional effort & team spirit. The start of the season was a rough one but the boys have shown up to practice & haven't given up. They have been rewarded with a few wins, & have enjoyed playing the game. There were multiple players who gave up birthday parties in order to support their teammates in the classic tournament. I couldn't be more proud of this team!

Nominated By: Devon Marshall Age Group of the Team: U6 Girls MW Team 2 - Marshall Please explain why you feel this team should be awarded the Team of the Week: This group of U6 girls in just a matter of a couple of games built such a great team spirit and bond. From a special team "Green Tornado Cheer" to hanging out for a long time after the game because they don't want to leave each other; the U6 Green Tornadoes are why I want my daughter to experience outdoor soccer in Sherwood Park. The memories, the relationships, and the exercise. Each one of these girls have

demonstrated such focus and joy for playing the game. They have improved so much and its such a pleasure seeing them use the skills they have learned during game time. Not to mention what a great, supportive group of parents too! They have communicated, participated and cheered this team on right from the get go! It makes coaching such an enjoyable experience! Way to go Green Tornadoes!

Recognizing the outstanding contributions by teams to game of soccer in Sherwood Park

SPDSA Coach of the Week

Congratulations to the following Coaches for their hard work. Each Coach of the Week will receive a gift card from Press’d Sandwiches and Exist Cycle.

Nominated By: Leanna Grenwich Age Group of the Team: U12 Girls (McManus) Please explain why you feel this Coach should be awarded the Coach of the Week: Hugh McManus should be awarded for several reasons. He is extremely organized, he gives and expects respect from his players, he consistently supports them in their efforts and makes sure that each player's contribution is recognized. He is incredibly enthusiastic on the sidelines and when plays don't go our way he is very constructive in his feedback. He also makes sure that the

players recognize the referees for their work. I am very pleased that he is my daughter's coach. Nominated By: Geri Olney Age Group of the Team: U10 Boys Junior Phoenix (Cadieux) Please explain why you feel this Coach should be awarded the Coach of the Week: Aaron Cadieux really takes the time to teach the kids new skills and gets them to work together as a team. As much as I am looking for my son to get exercise, I am also looking for him to improve his soccer skills. Aaron makes sure this is happening. Aaron is also coaching a U8 girls team and is the manager of one of our Adult Co-Ed teams. Nominated By: Janelle Morrison

Age Group of the Team: U5 Girls (Buschau/Hofmeyer) Please explain why you feel this Coach should be awarded the Coach of the Week: Coach Laine Buschau and Coach Steph Hofmeyer have been fantastic with the team of girls. They plan out the "drills" to be activities that not only teach the soccer skills, but are fun and age-appropriate for these little people. They are so enthusiastic when interacting with the girls, and they are very encouraging for the effort and sportsmanship demonstrated. They

genuinely care about the girls and make sure that everyone is doing the best that they can and having fun. They encourage parent participation and are approachable, organized, and kind. Their communication with the parents through email has been excellent and we always feel informed about what is happening. My daughter loves going to soccer, and her coaches are a big part of the reason her first experience playing a sport has been so successful. Way to go, ladies! Nominated By: Laureen Simmons Age Group of the Team: U10 Girls (Rudyk) Please explain why you feel this Coach should be awarded the Coach of the Week: Coach Erika Rudyk has worked hard with the girls teaching them about each position, and getting them to play together as a team and not just trying to do things by themselves. Coach has given each girl different positions do she could evaluate them, and then work with them to improve on their weaknesses without making them feel less about themselves. By doing this the girls have started winning and have become a stronger team than they were before the U10 tournament started.
