Begins about age 1 and lasts for about 2 years.

Erikson’s first stage … Basic trust vs.

mistrust (oral) Dependence on

caregivers for basic needs.

If trust is built, then the baby can move to the next stage with ease.

Erikson’s second stage … Autonomy vs. shame and doubt (anal)

Toilet training Independence Successful

autonomy eases the toddler’s move into Erikson’s third stage (Initiative vs. Guilt), about age 3.
