AgingIn Canada’s open society, aging is still an uncomfortable topic for mainstream media—but PhotoSensitive has decided to tackle it and shine light onto the lives of older adults with black and white photography. Canada's photographers are turning their collective lens to reexamine what it means to age.

Over 364,000 Quebecers are caring for an elder at least five hours a week. For many, it is a full-time job. Marie Bérubé, in her 60s, took early retirement in order to care for her dad, André, who is 93 years old.

Andrew TolsonPhotographer Andrew Tolson's daughter, Emma, mows the family lawn using her own kinetic energy and a push mower. Besides Emma getting a good workout, the Tolson family saves money and energy by not resorting to gas- or electric-powered machines. Emma's mower is also emission-free; gasoline-powered mowers emit large amounts of carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide.

Michele TarasPhotographer Michele Taras's photo illustrates how she feels kids today are caught up in the world of energy and technology. "In this electronic age, we all seem to be wrapped up in the newest gadgets and inventions, often oblivious to the impact that this has not only on the environment but also on our way of being as a society. Kids are looking for the thrill of new toys and parents are looking to impress. I remember one of my friends telling me that her teenage daughter was having a sleepover. When I asked her what teenagers do when they get together these days, with visions in my head of girls applying makeup and chatting about boys, she replied that they were sitting on the couch texting one another. We need to be mindful to find a solid balance between the convenience of the electronic age and the importance of human contact, while making sure that we drain the planet of as little energy as possible."

Angela Butler"Everyone Needs Their Fix" Photographer Angela Butler's self-portrait illustrates how some people are addicted to electricity in a similar way that others are addicted to drugs.

Christopher J. MorrisLaundry hanging on the line in the sun over a vegetable garden in East Vancouver, B.C. Energy from the sun dries the clothes on the line and, through photosynthesis, causes the vegetables to grow, which in turn provide us with energy. Drying laundry on a line, using sun and wind power instead of an electric dryer, can save an average family hundreds of dollars every year.

PHOTOGRAPHY AND SOCIAL REFORM Jacob Riis and Lewis Hine were among the first social reformers to use photography to document the effects of industrialization and urbanization on working-class Americans. Their work brought the need for housing and labor reform to the attention of legislators and the public. Both men worked tirelessly to improve the lives of America's working-class citizens.
