SOCIAL RELATIONS IN “UTOPIA” by Jacopo R. and Manuel

The population control

Thomas More conceived the population control in a particular and important way, because if it is used correctly and consciously, it can lead to solve a lot of current problems. In fact we live in a world which is characterized by overpopulated territories and by other places, where the development of the population goes to negative. The rules, established by Thomas More, would be useful because the population might have and express particular harmony and consistency in the development of the number of citizens

Social problems

In our society there are a lot of problems which are connected with the number of citizens. The most important are the overpopulation or the bad birth rate.

Tasso di fecondità.

Overpopulation

The problems connected to the overpopulation are: The increase of pollution. The depletion of non-renewable resources. The excessive waste production. The corruption of nature. The Global warming and the melting glaciers. The reckless construction of buildings, which determines inhuman conditions of life.

Poor birth rate

The problems linked to the poor birth rate are: The development of an old society which lead to an economic setback(if it isn’t handled correctly), because there are a few young people who work, despite a lot of retired. The decrease of modernization. The development of a static society and of a culture which holds out to not renew. The development of a new population policy which is used to increase the number of citizens.

Birth controlThe birth control is very important, however rules that State would develop, could interfere in personal life influencing personal freedom. This is a risk connected to any political Utopia. Even Plato, who is interested in building a perfect State, supposes to control the development of the births. He also anticipates some theories which are expressed by Thomas More, who wants to keep constant the number of citizens in the society using particular rules.

UTOPIA or DISTOPIA

Reading “Utopia” we have learned that there isn't what we might call “private life”.In Utopia, citizens live in relation to communities which they are mentioned in. Moreover they collaborate to manage their State in a better way.Connected to everything is what Moro relates about birth control.

-What are some advantages or disadvantages connected to the birth control?-How many people are there on the Earth?-Are these information alarming?
