Whilst it doesn’t place any legalities on construction works as yet, we have seen a significant increase in the request for social value (or community benefits) in the tender process. The construction industry has huge potential to add value in a number of ways through the creation of social value on projects. Contracting authorities who are beginning to realise the benefits of social value will be looking to attract credible and competent bidders, with extensive experience of delivering social benefits through their public contracts, so that they get the best value for money. Social value will thus be a differentiator in what is undoubtedly a tough market place. Social value is also a great opportunity for industry to shine and create a new image for itself in line with the Government’s Construction 2025 Strategy. Last year saw the Public Services (Social Value Act) brought into force.
