Activity 2 Summarising

Read the example in Activity 1 and compare that to the summary written below.

What is self esteem?

How you view and judge yourself is a measure of your self esteem. Self

esteem describes your values, beliefs and attitudes. It also describes the

value and worth that you give to yourself. A high self esteem is healthy and

is about accepting yourself for who you are.

The effects of low self esteem

Low self esteem affects how we relate to other people and to work our

work. People who have low self esteem behave in self defeating ways. For

example, these people may be afraid to take risks and this limits

opportunities in life.

Some basic steps to a higher self esteem 1. Focus on positive things about yourself, what you are good at; the

personal values you hold. 2. Determine who you want to be i.e. don’t try to measure up to someone

else’s expectations. 3. Congratulate yourself for things you have accomplished. 4. Take risks in order to succeed. Establish realistic goals. 5. Develop a support network.

Activity 34 I’m Listening to YOU!

Write how you would present information to the following employees.

Use the following criteria:

- Logical steps

- Make adjustments to own language to meet needs and language and literacy skills

of trainees

- Ensure trainee’s participation by conducting discussions, asking probing

questions, and using active listening techniques.

The machinery in a section at a factory had a decibel range far in excess of the safe level. Despite the operators wearing earmuffs, there were numerous compensation claims for industrial deafness. One of the operators suggested to management that only deaf people be employed in that section - he was ignored. Four years later, an occupational health and safety investigation recommended that only deaf people be employed in that section - and it was implemented. An expensive investigation and further cases of industrial deafness could have been avoided if the operator had known how to speak up - and management had known how to listen!

A foreman was discussing a concreting job with new employees - recently arrived Eastern European migrants with minimal or survival skill English. He said: “Now in some jobs we have to do, if it’s not done properly, a few months later we end up having to cut out the cancer. It happens on these particular jobs mainly.”

Concern and fright appeared on the faces of the employees as they understood that the “work” they would do might cause “cancer” which would have to be “cut out”! Their background: working in institutions such as Chernobyl or the “leaking” nuclear “factories”; the minimal occupational health & safety controls in their countries; and the numbers of cancer victims as

a result of “accidents”.

Bill works at Milton Electrical Supplies. When a customer comes in and asks for the X brand for a light switch, Bill says that the Y brand is much better. When the customer tells Bill he wants to buy the X brand, Bill gets a little upset - and it shows. When Bill goes to the stockroom to get the X brand, the customer leaves the store. He doesn’t wait around for Bill to get the switch

Lena is new at her job and one day Mr. Smith overhears this phone conversation:

Customer Do you sell the Casio brand of watches? Lena Yeah! Customer Do you have any big, silver ones with the date and day on the face? Lena Nope, just gold! Customer What is the price? Lena Two hundred and fifty bucks. Customer I think I’ll try somewhere else! Lena Sorry.

Later, Mr. Smith tells Lena she is never to answer the phones.

23.2.00 In Federal Court today, racehorse owners B. Will and L. Open were charged with

defrauding the public. The prosecution stated that the owners had conspired to swap the

gelding, Recluse Racer, which has an impressive tally of wins and therefore would have

high odds, for Reparo in the Journeyman Stk and Jokers Card in the Schnappes Stk ,

which are horses that usually end up last in the race field. The owners argued that there

was no swap but the horses in question had been training with Recluse Racer prior to the

race meet. They pointed out that Hoppers Praise had been equal first anyway. And it was

coincidental that all three horses looked identical – they are all completely black, same

height and age.

It may be 50c a bet but

you bet on each race 5

days a week and there

are 5 races a day – you

add it up! How much do

you really get back? You

might win once a day if

you can get a 10:1 but

how much will that be?

Race Organisers are contemplating ear tags for all horses so that no swaps can be made between ‘look-alikes’. Over the years many punters have been defrauded by the age-old practice of swapping useless but high handicap Bessie with the Stud who has a string of wins!

And Recluse Racer storms home eclipsing the favourite and taking the line at 5 to 1… Amazing to see his stablemate, Reparo, in second last position again after such a spectacular race last Saturday. All punters had backed a re-run and dropped his rating to 7 to 1 odds – no need for that now!

Verbal Report from Manager – Sue Bride

We don’t have enough staff to cover the busy lunchtime crowd. We take lunch either side but that means someone is getting lunch at 11 am and someone else

at 2pm – it is unfair for all. The other thing is that when someone has an RDO you don’t get someone else to take their place.. it’s just … wear it.. you have to

work harder! I also think there should be some sort of uniform because you cannot tell who is a customer and who is the staff member.

Written report from Manager – Belinda Sims

The following information relates to staff and their professional conduct: 1. On Friday morning 12th Jan I heard Gertrude Flowsa telling a customer

that the dress she was trying on would make her look fatter – this is not an appropriate comment to make to customers

2. The second incident occurred at lunchtime when Gertrude again was

overheard by another staff member to say:” I need to have lunch at 12.30 with my boyfriend. There must be a rule against people working through lunchtime. I will find out”

3. All staff members have asked about a uniform as part of a way to identify staff to customers

Notation from Manager- Georgiou Atamanatos

Can we get some uniformity in clothes for staff – real confusing for the customers? Also, have you received the Wageline Award information I sent you detailing the conditions for staff in the retail field Things like how much time they can have off for lunch and when – timing is very important. Anyway give me a call or email when you can get to this.

Activity 70 Cont’d

Read the work reports and develop categories that these reports have covered e.g. each report may discuss staff uniforms so one category

will be “staff uniforms”; then, draw up a table for the categories and identify the ‘gist’ of the comments under each heading; then, finally summarise each issue, and determine an ’action’ to resolve the ‘issue’
