Objectives:Objectives:Objectives:Objectives:
• Identify ways to make socializations fun and
exciting while increasing attendance.

activities at the socialization- and extend the
experiences the child has in socialization in
the child’s home or daily life

• What is the purpose of your Socializations?
• What are the goals driving the Socializations?
• How are you individualizing for families?
• How are you engaging families?

Socializations…Socializations…Socializations…Socializations…
Recognizing that socializations are a vital
component of the home-based program option,
Head Start programs must be careful in how they
plan these experiences to meet the individual
needs of families. Programs should consider the
following when designing socializations:

Socializations…Socializations…Socializations…Socializations…
What is the purpose of these experiences? In light
of your community and families, what are the
goals driving socialization experiences? Does
the term "socialization" accurately describe
these experiences? (Many programs have
named these group experiences "Parent-Child
Time," or something that emphasizes the fact
that parents participate in activities with their
children.)

Socializations…Socializations…Socializations…Socializations…
How will staff address the individual goals
for families during socializations?
Limiting the number attending a
socialization to no more than ?????
children will allow staff to be more
effective in addressing the goals of each
child and his or her parent.
California State TTA Center, a member of the OHS TTA System
Socializations…Socializations…Socializations…Socializations…
To meet families' needs, will socializations be
organized by child age or home visitor caseload?
Will socializations be offered at different times
and provide opportunities for fathers and
working parents to participate? How will siblings'
needs be addressed (i.e., will they be directly
involved in socialization activities, or will
separate, developmentally appropriate activities
be made available)?

Depending on the goals of the socialization,
which staff besides the home visitor should be
involved in the design and implementation of
the activities? What should their qualifications
be (e.g., a health background, center-based
early childhood program experience, or family
counseling)? How can members of the
community, such as Health Services Advisory
Committee participants, be involved in
socializations?

Group SocializationsGroup SocializationsGroup SocializationsGroup Socializations
Group socializations provide parents the opportunity to:
• Obtain additional feedback about their child’s interests, strengths, needs and resources
• Observe their children
• Share and learn from others about the challenges and joys of parenting
• To develop a wider network of friends to share common concerns

Socialization RequirementsSocialization RequirementsSocialization RequirementsSocialization Requirements
The socialization experiences support the goals
established during the home visits. The Family
Partnership Agreement must include the
specific roles of parents in socializations and
home visits [ 45 CFR 1304.40(a)(2)]. This
provides a mechanism for connecting the
home visits with the socialization experiences
so that they build on family goals and are
meaningful to the participants.

Five Steps to Linking Home Visits to Socializations
1. Create a vision and position statement.
2. Align home visit and socialization structures.
3. Observe to identify skills, interests, and needs.
4. Plan home visits and socializations.
5. Develop a procedure for linking home visits to
socializations.

• The most important thing is spending time
with your child—talking, reading, playing,
helping with meal or bath time, and doing
things together around the house. Investing
your time while your child is small will pay
dividends for you and your child forever—not
to mention it is just fun!

How Children Benefit from Father Involvement
• They go to school with qualities needed for learning! They have more self
control, fewer behavior problems, are willing to try new things and are more
patient.
• They have better intellectual, motor and verbal development! They are stronger
in math and reading and able to express themselves in conversation.
• They are more secure, confident and curious! They are eager to learn, problem
solve and explore.
• They make wise life choices! They are more likely to go to college, less likely to
become a teen parent, less likely to be incarcerated and less likely to show signs
of depression.
• They are compassionate and empathetic! They care about others and have good
social skills.

Research is demonstrating that fathers receive
benefits from being involved with their
children too in ways we don't often think
about. Involved fathers are more likely to
advance in their occupations, be happier,
work harder toward a successful marriage
and have better physical and emotional
health.

What else can Fathers do?
• Show affection and support for your child.
• Increase the amount and quality of time spent with your child.
• Work to build a strong relationship and good communication with
your child's mother, whether or not you live in the same household.
Share household, financial and child rearing responsibilities.
• Read and play together, set age appropriate goals and expectations
for your child, be consistent and provide emotional security and
help your child learn to make healthy lifestyle choices.
• Learn more about child development and parenting skills.
• Understand and celebrate the unique and powerful role he plays in
the lives of his children!

• The most important thing to do for all family
members in Head Start is show how adaptable
it is to meet the needs of moms, dads,
extended family, etc...
• Men want to participate but the environment
needs to be set up in such a way that they don't
feel intimidated.

• Male Involvement is important! Head Start
welcomes all men involved in the lives of HS
children to all Head Start activities! Males
should be encouraged to participate in home
visits and play groups, to help in the
classroom or to serve on a committee or
Policy Council.
