  • Society of Government Meeting Professionals Old Dominion Chapter 2013 Education Conference Knowledge World Information and knowledge are changing at an unprecedented pace Photo of the human mind.
  • Slide 41
  • Society of Government Meeting Professionals Old Dominion Chapter 2013 Education Conference Knowledge differs from all other means of production in that it cannot be inherited or bequeathed. It has to be acquired anew by every individual, and everyone starts out with the same total ignorance. Photo of the cover of Peter F. Druckers book, Managing in the Next Society.
  • Slide 42
  • Society of Government Meeting Professionals Old Dominion Chapter 2013 Education Conference What is different this time is the need for the continuing education of already well-trained and highly knowledgeable adults. School traditionally stopped when work began. In the knowledge society it never stops. Photo of the cover of Peter F. Druckers book, Managing in the Next Society.
  • Slide 43
  • Society of Government Meeting Professionals Old Dominion Chapter 2013 Education Conference Conversely knowledge rapidly becomes obsolete, and knowledge workers regularly have to go back to school. Continuing education of already highly educated adults will therefore become a big growth area in the Next Society. Photo of the cover of Peter F. Druckers book, Managing in the Next Society.
  • Slide 44
  • Society of Government Meeting Professionals Old Dominion Chapter 2013 Education Conference But most of it will be delivered in nontraditional ways, ranging from weekend seminars to on-line training programs, and in any number of places, from a traditional university to the students home. Peter F. Drucker Photo of a conference workshop.
  • Slide 45
  • Society of Government Meeting Professionals Old Dominion Chapter 2013 Education Conference The core problem is that our education and training systems were built for another era, an era in which most workers needed only a rudimentary education. It is not possible to get where we have to go by patching that system. There is not enough money available at any level of our intergovernmental system to fix this problem by spending more on the system we have. We can get where we must go only by changing the system itself. (Source: Touch Choices Tough Times, The Report of the new Commission on the Skills of the American Workforce, 2007)
