law, including illegally deducting money from em-ployees for safety equipment and failing to pay work-ers. In addition, the company, its owner, and threeof its current or past managers were each chargedwith more than 9,000 violations of child labor laws.Agriprocessors denied the civil rights of American, immigrant, and child workers.

On August 20, 2008, approximately 70 rabbis, along with some other Jewish workers employed atAgriprocessors, prayed with their feet and staged a30-minute walkout over delayed payment of wagesand other compensation issues. We, too, can followtheir lead.

In response to the disastrous revelations ofAgriprocessors, Conservative Rabbi Morris Allenstarted a new type of kosher certification – the MagenTzedek, or seal of justice, which is backed by themajor institutions of the Conservative Movement. They are founded on the principle that we are whatwe eat. The ethical seal will signify that the kosherfood has been prepared with the highest degree ofintegrity. Products carrying the Magen Tzedek sealreflect the highest standard on a variety of impor-tant issues: employee wages and benefits, healthand safety, animal welfare, corporate transparencyand environmental impact.

Magen Tzedek plans for labels to appear on foodin the upcoming year. You can do your part by learn-ing more about Magen Tzedek (you can read aboutit at http://www.magentzedek.org) and throughbuying foods with a Hecksher Tzedek label. May thisbe a year of action and for taking pride in our localand global Jewish communities.

in the things we do toprove our love than whatwe say to profess that love.Likewise, Judaism requiresaction. Tikkun olam, deeds of loving kindness, tsedakah, feeding thehungry, lifting the fallen, seeking justice, nurturingthe world we were given

in trust; all are the daily proof that we stand humble, grateful, and mindful of G-d’s grace.

This month Judaism gives us a specific act toperform towards our demonstration of love for theAlmighty. Tu b’Shevat, the 15th day of Shevat (cor-responding this year with January 30th), is oftencharacterized as the “New Year for Trees.” Thereare only a few common observances for this day: 1)eat a new fruit on the day, 2) collect and/ or donatemoney for planting trees in Israel through the JNF(Jewish National Fund), 3) spend time amongst treesin nature, and 4) is to plant a tree. The tree is aprominent symbol in Judaism for its deep base ofroots, its quiet strength and durability, its life-givingfruit, and its sheltering canopy. Etz Chayim, theTree of Life, uses these attributes to represent all ofcreation and our place in it. Planting a tree is an actof faith and a gift to the unseen future. The onewho plants the tree may not be alive to rest in itsshade. So, too, true love does not act to reap asubstantive reward.

“The righteous shall flourish like the palm andgrow tall like the cedars of Lebanon.” (Psalm 23)

Tu b’Shevat is a holiday not just to rememberour responsibility as stewards of G-d’s creation, stretching all the way back to the proverbial GanEiden, Garden of Eden. It is also a time to reflect onthe myriad of symbolic parallels that Judaism andlife in general share with the silent sentries of theforest. A long and storied history grounds us deeplyand firmly with the moral fiber of our ancestors.

Come join me and your SOJC family to act asone community celebrating the blessings of trees. We will be traveling out to the Little Slice Ranch toplant trees, play games, eat, commune with thetrees, eat, take a hayride and be together. I hopeto see you all there on Sunday, January 24th at 1pm(after Religious School). See page 5 in this Newslet-ter for details and directions.

How do we express ourlove for our Creator?

Words are not enough! Even in our own relation-ships words are an insufficient expression of love foranother human. Our families place much more stock

This month we can look forward to two “doubleheaders,” first, Rabbi Levy will be in attendance

twice, two weekends in a row, January 15 – 17 andJanuary 22 – 24. Those of our members who haveattended services and lectures during her previousvisits are aware of how privileged we are to havebeen assigned Rabbi Levy as a Heritage Legacy Fel-low. For those who have yet to attend a serviceduring one of Rabbi Levy’s visits, I urge you to at-tend, you will be greatly rewarded. Details of thesetwo visits will be distributed shortly, but we do planon a Friday night family service with dinner on thefirst week-end, i.e. Friday January 15. Reserva-tions for dinner are a must.

The second “double header” is a double featuremovie sponsored by the Adult Education Committee, which has been sponsoring a movie series with a freemovie — about one a month. On Sunday January 17we will be showing two movies based upon the ShalomAlecheim’s short stories on Tevya the Milkman. Thefirst is the classic Yiddish (with English sub-titles) movie“Tevye” staring Maurice Schwartz. This movie wasthe first non-English language film to be included inthe National Film Registry of the Library of Congress.Following a light, free lunch (bagel and cream cheese)we will show the musical “Fiddler on the Roof” basedupon the same short story. These showings are freeand open to the public.

During the month of January we celebrate theholiday of Tu Bishvat, the “new year for the trees.”According to the Mishnah there are four “new years”in the Jewish calendar. To quote from Wikipedia;“Tu Bishvat appears in the Mishnah in Tractate RoshHashanah as one of the four new years in the Jewishcalendar. The discussion of when the new year fortrees occurs was a source of debate among the rab-bis: “And there are four New Year dates: - The firstof Nisan - New Year for kings and festivals - Thefirst of Elul- new year for animal tithes. Rabbi Elazarand Rabbi Shimon say: the first of Tishrei. - Thefirst of Tishrei (our current Rosh Hashanah) newyear for calculation of the calendar, sabbatical yearsand jubilees for planting and sowing - The first ofShevat new year for trees, according to the schoolof Shamai; The school of Hillel say: the fifteenth of

Shevat” (Rosh Hashana:1a)”“The rabbis of the Talmud ruled in favor of Hillel

on this issue. Thus the 15th of Shevat became thedate for calculating when the agricultural cycle be-gan or ended for the purpose of biblical tithes involv-ing trees and fruit.” In Talmudic times there weretwo main schools of thought, the house of Shamai, and the house of Hillel. In general, it is the house ofHillel that we currently follow. What I find fascinat-ing is that even though the house of Shamai was inthe minority, the Rabbis representing the majorityhad enough respect for the opposing view to stillkeep their discussion within Rabbinic literature.

In honor of Tu Bishvat, Cantor Ramsay and Mariswill be hosting an outing at their Ranch on SundayJanuary 24. Details of this outing are containedelsewhere in this month’s newsletter. Note that forthose who prefer not to drive to the Cantor’s ranch,we will be organizing rides from the Synagogue leav-ing at noon on that Sunday. Please contact the of-fice if you desire a ride. Recently there has beenthe tradition of organizing Tu Bishvat seders similarto the Passover seder. For those interested in moreinformation on Tu Bishvat and Tu Bishvat seders, witha unique Jewish conservation point of view I recom-mend you visit http://www.coejl.org/~coejlor/tubshvat/, sponsored by COEJL, Coalition on the En-vironment and Jewish Life.

I look forward to seeing many of you at the firstsession on the Jewish History Survey Course startingon Sunday, January 10, 2010. This course will coverthe period from Biblical times to the present, and isbased upon the series of nine hour long lectures thatAbba Eban (the former and long time Israeli Ambas-sador to the UN) gave on PBS television around 1984.The structure of the class will be to first view thehour long lecture on DVD followed by a discussionperiod. This is an introductory course, and no ad-vanced knowledge is assumed. A detailed curriculumwill be circulated by the Adult Education Committeeshortly, and well before the classes begin. It will alsoinclude recommended advanced readings from RabbiTelushkin’s book, “Jewish Literacy Revised Ed: TheMost Important Things to Know About the JewishReligion, Its People, and Its History,” (current price$23.75 from Amazon.com) and from RaymondScheindlin’s book, “A Short History of the JewishPeople: From Legendary Times to Modern Statehood”(current price $12.40 from Amazon.com).

I always get a little reflective around this time ofyear, not as much as during the High Holy Days,

but these holidays do give us an opportunity to lookback at the previous year. Especially now, as I amlaid up and not able to go to work, I feel I shouldmake productive use of my time. No worries….I willbe fine by the time this newsletter goes to print!

I must admit the first half of this year wasdisappointing as far as participation in the eventswe have offered. I started out writing about eachevent – The September Bunko Party, the clean up ofthe SOJC kitchen, and the November Bazaar, but mywriting turned negative. And there is far too muchnegativity in this world!!

So, For 2010 let’s look at the POSITIVE! I havemuch to be grateful for:1. For my two daughters…that they are healthy and

have good paying jobs, so they can live on theirown!!

2. For my mom…that she enjoys good health andan active life which includes the synagogue andJCC activities.

3. For my husband…who supports my participationin the synagogue and the time it takes to orga-nize Sisterhood events.

4. For the SOJC Board…who each donate their per-sonal time to problem solve and make the toughdecisions for the synagogue so that you can com-plain about them

5. For Jeff and Michele Fischer…who are an amaz-ing example for all of us with their endless en-ergy and dedication to their children and our shul

6. For my Sisterhood Board….even when you arebusy or forgetful or unable to help with some-thing, I am grateful for your feedback and sup-

This December Bella Katz, Alan Roufa, Mel Marsel, and Jules Gelade all chanted Haftarot beautifully.

Lewis Klapper, Jules Gelade, Yvonne Bleeckercantillated the Torah with precision and confidence.Mel Marsel and Alan Roufa also assisted in leadingservices on Shabbat morning. The congregation ap-preciates the effort that each of you puts into pre-paring for your participation, and they frequentlystop me to comment on how much they enjoy see-ing you and hearing you represent them on the bima.Thank you all for your dedication to our community.

These adult Laypeople are an inspiration to usall. Some of them have honed their skills all theirlives, but most have come to their mastery of theseskills during adulthood and continue to practice theseskills in service to our synagogue. There are a num-ber of adults who have trained to participate morefully in our Shabbat services. If you would like tolearn, or want to get on the list to read Torah,Haftarah or to lead a service, or if you just wantmore info, e-mail me at [email protected]. It’s amitzvah, it’s uplifting, and it’s a wonderful experi-ence!
