Revolve?Revolve means for a smaller object to
move around a larger object.
Planets revolve around the sun.
![Page 3: Solar system](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062418/556488e0d8b42a73418b4c63/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
Rotation• Rotate is similar to spinning. When a
planet rotates, its spins itself on its
axis.
The Earth Rotates
![Page 4: Solar system](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062418/556488e0d8b42a73418b4c63/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Difference between Inner and Outer Planets• Inner planets are inside asteroid belt,
Outer planets are outside of asteroid
belt.
• Inner planets are smaller than outer
planets
• Inner planets are mostly made of
rock, outer planets are mostly made
of gas.
![Page 5: Solar system](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062418/556488e0d8b42a73418b4c63/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Craters in inner planets?• There are more craters in the inner
planets because sun’s gravity
attracts asteroids from the asteroid
belts to the inner planets.
![Page 6: Solar system](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062418/556488e0d8b42a73418b4c63/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Orbit• Orbit is the path a planet/satellite
follows when it revolves around a
larger object.
This Satellite orbits around the sun.

A Planet
• A planet needs to have:
• Large enough so the gravity is strong
enough to make the planet round
• Orbits around the sun
• Cleared out its path
![Page 8: Solar system](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062418/556488e0d8b42a73418b4c63/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Dwarf Planet
• A dwarf planet is similar to a planet.
• It is large enough so the gravity is
strong enough to make the planet
round and orbits around the sun
• But it has not yet cleared its path
![Page 9: Solar system](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062418/556488e0d8b42a73418b4c63/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
The 13 planets?
• Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars
Inner planets
• Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune
Outer Planets
• Pluto, Ceres, Eris
Dwarf Planets

MERCURY
• Mercury is the closest planet to the sun
• Helium and sodium are found on its
atmosphere.
• Impact cratering, volcanism, and tectonic
activity shaped Mercury.
• Has a very thin atmosphere because its
gravity is too weak.
![Page 12: Solar system](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062418/556488e0d8b42a73418b4c63/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
VenusIt is the brightest planet in the solar
system.
Carbon dioxide and sulfuric acid could
be found on its atmosphere.
It is the only planet that rotates clockwise
Days are longer than years because it takes longer for Venus to rotate
once than revolve around the sun
once.
Venus is also the hottest planet
because it has a lot of greenhouse gas in its atmosphere.

EarthTwo main things that make up Earth’s atmosphere• Nitrogen• Oxygen
Two things Earth Protects us from• Solar Radiation• Tiny Meteors
Physical Features• 23.5 degree tilt• The rapid spin of the Earth along with the liquid, hot
metallic core creates a magnetic field.
