The Solar System
By Allison Conrad
Sun
Sun• A star in the middle of our Solar
system• Also known as Sol• Trillions of other stars in the universe
like it• Made of dust and gas draw together
by a common Gravity• Started to provide its own light, heat,
and energy• Around 1 million Degrees
Mercury
Mercury• Named after the Roman Version of
Hermes, the Messenger God• Less gravity because it’s smaller than
Earth• Made mostly of leftover iron from
when the Sun formed• Cold because it have no molten core• Too small to have an atmosphere• No moons
Venus
Venus• Named after the Roman version of
Aphrodite, goddess of love• Does have an atmosphere• Very hot surface• Liquid molten core• No moons• Same size as Earth• 1 orbit of the Sun: 224.701 days• 1 rotation: 243.16 days
Earth
Earth• Roman name for the Greek go Gaea,
or mother Earth, Who was married to Uranus
• Biggest terrestrial (dense, solid) planet
• Only planet with life (known for fact)• One moon named Luna• Orbit of the sun – 365.3 days• 1 rotation – 23 hours, 56 minutes
Mars
Mars• The Roman name for Ares, god of
war• Two moons• Closest temperature to Earth out of
all the other planets• You would weigh a lot less on Mars
compared to Earth• 1 orbit of the Sun: 686.98 days• 1 rotation: 24 hours 37 mintues
Jupiter
Jupiter• The roman name for Zeus, king of
the gods• You would weigh more on Jupiter
than on Earth• Has many storms including the
biggest one, the big red spot• Has no solid surface• At least 63 moons• Made of hydrogen and water• 1 orbit of the Sun: 4332.59 days
Saturn
Saturn• Roman name for Kronos, who
overthrew Uranus to become king of the gods, and then was defeat by his son, Jupiter
• The rings are 169,800 miles wide• 34 moons• Made of methane and helium• 1 orbit of the sun: 10,759.2 days• 1 rotation: 10 hours 13 minutes
Uranus
Uranus• King of the gods until overthrown,
also married to Earth• Spins on it’s side • Large, rocky core• Almost identical to Neptune• 27 moons• 1 orbit of the Sun: 30, 684 days• 1 rotation: 17.2 hours
Neptune
Neptune• The roman name for Poseidon, god
of the sea• Has a giant storm known as the Great
Dark Spot• 6 rings• 13 moons• 1 orbit of the Sun: 60, 190 days• 1 rotation: 16 hours 17 minutes
Pluto
Pluto• The roman name for Hades, god of
the underworld• Also known as the Dwarf planet• Was officially disnamed as a planet in
2006• 3 moons• 1 orbit of the Sun: 90, 465 days• 1 rotation: 6 days, 9 hours
