WHAT DO WE NEED TO SURVIVE ON ANOTHER

PLANET?

The SUN• Diameter: 1.4 million km• Rotation (days): 27 days• Surface temperature (temp): 5,500 degrees

Celsius• Core temperature (temp): 15 million degrees

Celsius

TERESTIAL PLANETS

Page 5: Solar system ppt(helen)

Mercury

• Distance from sun: 58 million km• Diameter: 4878 km• Rotation (days): 58.65• Length of year: 0.24• Moons: 0• How hot: 400 degrees Celsius

• Mercury (element) metal and chemical element.

• Mercury (planet) the planet nearest to the sun in the solar system.

• Mercury (mythology), a roman god.

Page 6: Solar system ppt(helen)

Venus

• Distance from sun: 108 million km 0.7au

• Diameter: 12, 102 km• Rotation (days): 243r• Length of year: 0.62• Moons: 0• How hot: 500 degrees

Celsius

• Venus is the 2nd planet from the sun.

• Orbiting the sun every 224.7 earth days.

• This planet is named after Venus, the roman goddess of love and beauty.

• About 70% nitrogen.

Mars

• Distance from sun: 228 million km 1.5 au

• Diameter: 6787km• Rotation (days): 1.03• Length of year: 1.88• Moons: 2

• Mercury is the 4th planet from the sun.

• This planet is named after the roman god of wars.

• It’s often described as the “Red Planet”.

• Until the first flyby of Mars occurred in 1965, by Mariner 4

Jupiter• Jupiter is the 5th planet from the sun. • It is the largest planet of the solar system.• The Romans named it after the god Jupiter.• This planet is primarily composed of hydrogen, with a quarter

of it’s mass being helium. This planet has been explored on several occasions by robotic space crafts, by pioneer and voyager.

• Jupiter is cold but there is a rock centre in the middle that is really hot.

• When your away from the hot rock centre you will need to be wearing warm clothing.

Page 10: Solar system ppt(helen)

Jupiter and its Moons• Jupiter is the largest of the planets,

with a volume more than 1,300 times greater than that of Earth. Jupiter’s colorful bands are caused by strong atmospheric currents and accentuated by a dense cloud cover. The massive planet, upper right, is shown here with its four largest satellites: Io, upper left, Ganymede, lower left, Europa, center, and Callisto, lower right.

Saturn• Saturn is the 6th planet from the sun.• Saturn is named after the roman god Saturn, equated to

the Greek cronus (the titan father of Zeus). • Saturn along with the other gas giants, Jupiter, Uranus

and Neptune.• These 4 planets are referred to as the Jovian planets

meaning Jupiter like.• Saturn is probably composed of a core of iron, nickel,

silicon and oxygen compounds. • This planet has a deep layer of metallic hydrogen, an

intermediate layer of, liquid hydrogen and liquid helium, and finally with an outer gaseous layer.

Uranus• Uranus is the 7th planet from the sun.• Uranus has the 3rd planetary radius and 4th largest

mass in the solar system.• It was named after the ancient Greek deity of the

sky Uranus (ancient Greek oupavos).• The father of cronus (Saturn) and grand father of

Zeus (Jupiter).• Uranus is 15 times the mass of earth but not as

dense.

Page 15: Solar system ppt(helen)

Neptune• Neptune is the 8th planet from the sun.• It is named after the roman god of the sea.• Neptune is 17 times the mass of planet earth.• Neptune’s atmosphere is composed of

hydrogen and helium, along with traces of hydrocarbons and probably nitrogen.

But the question is WHAT DO WE NEED TO SURVIVE ON ANOTHER

PLANET?

Page 18: Solar system ppt(helen)

What do we need to survive on MERCURY?• Oxygen to breath• Hydrogen to breath• Umbrella

Page 19: Solar system ppt(helen)

What do we need to survive on VENUS?

• Endless supply of food• Water • A space suit for oxygen

Page 20: Solar system ppt(helen)

What do we need to survive on MARS?

• Spacecraft with supplies of: • Power• Cooling • Food • Water • Air • A way to dispose wastes• Recycling air• Recycling water• Recycling carbon

Page 21: Solar system ppt(helen)

What do we need to survive on JUPITER?

• Ugg boots to keep your feet warm, 3 pairs of thick socks worn on each pther to keep it warm to.

• Ear muffs to keep your ears warm.

Page 22: Solar system ppt(helen)

What do we need to survive on SATURN?

• An oxygen tank.• A space suit.• Water.• Food.• A transportation device.• A pressure suit.• Rope.

Page 23: Solar system ppt(helen)

What do we need to survive on URANUS?

• Warm clothing.• Food.• Water.

Page 24: Solar system ppt(helen)

What do we need to survive on NEPTUNE?

• Lots of food and water.• Something to keep warm in.
