Introduction

• There is a great deal of information and enthusiasm today about the development and increased production

of our global energy needs from alternative energy sources.

• Solar energy, wind power and moving water are all traditional sources of alternative energy that are

making progress.

How long can we rely on Fossil Fuels?

We all know the harmful side effects of using fossil fuels.

Besides that, recent research says that we cannot rely on

them for long.

In 2009 proved reserves were estimated as follows with that

year’s fuel consumption in mind:

• Oil: 46 years (depleted in 2055)

• Natural gas: 63 years (depleted in 2072)

• Coal: 119 years (depleted in 2128)

Besides proven reserves there are still ‘probable’ and

‘discovered’ reserves. Therefore it’s possible that oil will last for

another 100 years or maybe even more. The same can be

said about gas and coal.

And after that?

The answer to the question is of course

Renewable Energy.

The sun is the most important source of renewable energy available today. Scientists

and engineers today seek to utilize solar radiation directly by converting it into useful

heat or electricity.

Solar Energy

A photovoltaic system (informally, PV system) is an arrangement of components designed to supply usable

electric power for a variety of purposes, using the Sun (or, less commonly, other light sources) as the power source. Solar PV total global capacity increased

during 2010-2013 from 40 GW to 139 GW.

How do photovoltaic systems work?

Solar panels

How can we make this system more efficient?

Solar Amplifier and Tracking System

A project utilizing sensors and servo motors to build an efficient solar energy capturing system

Basic Idea

The setup uses LDRs and servo motors to sense and accurately position the solar panels so as to produce

maximum possible output. A mirror is used to amplify the light source.
