Osio International, Inc. was founded in 1996 to facilitate off-shore sourcing for U.S. consumer product manufacturers, and continues to be one of the fastest growing flexible packaging suppliers in the U.S. Fueled mostly by the tremendous popularity of its printed shrink sleeve labels, it provides superior quality products at an outstanding value, being a dependable supplier, and always searching for better ways to keep customers at the forefront of packaging innovation. To reinforce its differentiator and expand the market, Osio produces more flexible and productive sleeve labeller.

Conventional architecture for sleeve labeller normally has intermittent motion profile and sensor distance to shooter is needed to be changed for different speeds. However, the newly developed Sleever machine of Osio has a whole new level of innovative control architecture based on Allen-Bradley® solutions of Rockwell Automation Inc.

To develop innovative Sleeve Labeller which is 800 bpm (Flim length 100mm) machine, Power programming is the suggested base template using Rockwell Automation’s sample code library. This basic template includes a PackML conforming Code Standard using S88 Terminology. It saves the time for code development by 80%.

Between Allen-Bradley® CompactLogix L36ERM PAC and Kinetix 6500 Servo Drive, the CST is the common time base, and CompactLogix PAC works as the time master. This system is able to get the almost real time data or set the real time command by using CIP Motion.

The machine has 2 servo axis controlled by Kinetix 6500 servo drive and 1 external encoder feedback controlled by PowerFlex 525 AC drive for conveyor velocity and position. Especially, Servo Drive is controlling two important mechanical parts, Film Puller and Film Cutter. These two parts need to be synchronized with the conveyor by using external encoder feedback. Moreover, distinct from conventional fixed motion profile, continuous motion control (position CAM) is used for better flexibility. All solutions are configured based on Integrated Motion Control using Rockwell Automation’s Logix Platform.

Each device in Integrated Architecture™ for motion control is integrated by unmodified network protocol, Ethernet/IP™. This common network not only enables operators to easily configure the RPI for each device but also helps configure the

execution mode of each Task/Program/Routing to ensure the data has fully uploaded. This capability makes control system to calculate and manage real-time data for the machine.

For the machine displayed in PACK EXPO, 2 high speed registration sensors and 2 sensors are applied. The registration sensor detects the film (label print) mark with high speed and connected to servo drive. The other 2 sensors are for detecting screw parking position and bottle counts with being connected to I/O module.

The integrated machine control platform will cut down machine development time typically by 50% or more due to single programming tool and one recipe configuration across PAC, VFD, servo drive.

In Addition, the platform will increase machine performance with the same mechanics typically by 30% or more with better synchronization and the machine will be adapted to line conditions seamlessly. Also, it will increase productivity of machine due to smoother motion which results in fewer film jams.
