What Does the Prefix "In" mean when added to a word?
Solving InequalitiesAn inequality is a number sentence much like an equation, but rather than an equal sign in the middle, there is...
> < ≥ ≤
The solution to an equation looks like...
x = 3
The solution to an inequality looks like
x < 5
In both cases, the solution makes the number sentence a true statement.

Solving Inequalities
So remember that whole "solving equations" thing we did? Well it hasn't gone anywhere, and it's only coming back!
We solve inequalities the same way as we solved
equations, using _____________ _____________ .
x + 4 > -8
Check your
answer!!!
Inequalities H.notebook September 27, 2016
1. x - 5 ≤ 19
2. x -10 > -1
3. x + 9 < 6
One Rule to Note!!!
When multiplying or dividing both sides of inequality by a NEGATIVE number, you MUST FLIP the inequality symbol.
-4x ≥ 8
Inequalities H.notebook September 27, 2016
1. -5x > 30
2. 4x + 2 < 22
3. -7x ≥ 42
4. 9 - x ≤ 11
The graph below represents which inequality?
-6
A. x > -6
B. x < -6
C. x < -6
D. x > -6
Inequalities H.notebook September 27, 2016
6 - 4x > -30
A.x > -9 B.x > 9 C.x < -9 D.x < 9
Solve Multi-Step Inequalities
Once again, we will solve multi-step inequalities just as we solved multi-step equations.
4x + 3 > -x + 13
Solve and graph the solutions to the inequalities.
1. -2x - 8 < -5x + 25
2. 3(x - 4) ≥ 7x + 8

Word Problems: Defining a Variable
When turning a word problem into an equation/inequality we need to determine what the variable
will be.
Tommy has $40 in his wallet. He will spend two dollars on burgers. He has at least eight dollars left. What is the maximum amount of burgers he could have bought?
The variable will be the object(s) asked for in the question.

Interval Notation
When writing the solution set to an inequality, we may choose to use, (or be asked to use), interval notation. An interval is a portion of the number line.
Parenthesis - Use parentheses when < or > are used to describe an interval's endpoint.
Brackets - Use brackets when < or > are used to describe an interval's endpoints.
Infinty - Use ∞ when the interval continues off in a positive direction. Use -∞ when the interval continues off in a negative direction.
Solve, graph, and use interval notation to describe the solution.

2. 5x - 3 > 7 OR 4x - 6 < -10
