Something About Elizabeth is a heritage-clothing brand that produces high quality garments using the fundamentals of British tailoring. The brand launched in July 2011 with a striking collection that explored the infatuation with British money (AKA Elizabeth) and its effects on society.

A bold guerilla campaign garnered high profile celebrity ambassadors, who sparked a surge of new supporters. Within a year SAE was heavily featured in two Channel 4 documentaries, styling fashion connoisseurs and producing music videos for artists.

AW13 saw the brand begin to experiment with various luxury fabrics and bespoke cut and sew pieces. This included the never seen before leather tailcoat, which became the talk of the red carpet at the 2013 MOBO awards.

With a meticulously planned retail strategy the brand dominated street markets and pop up stores across London, leaving lasting impressions through intriguing shop layouts and impeccable service. Collections were sold out in Spitalfields market, Boxpark and C/159 on Camden High Street and the word began to spread overseas to Berlin where we took part in ‘From London with Love’ a Pop Up scheme hosted by We Are Pop Up showcasing 8 of the hottest brands from the UK.

We live in a money-obsessed culture where greed is celebrated, poverty is rife and wealth equals success. Sophisticated prints, luxury fabrics and a painstaking attention to detail are reserved for the fashion elite. This exclusive margin of society love to make statements about their wealth and revel in how unobtainable their pieces are to the majority.

But there is a new breed of fashion leaders. A growing group of creative men and women who are unhindered by class divides, have a unique style and are grounded in reality. More socially conscious, they expect every piece to have a deeper meaning.

We introduce to you, the Urban Connoiseur.

Something About Elizabeth was founded to create a more socially aware British heritage brand that had its roots in urban culture. Aimed at Urban Connoisseurs who can see the bigger picture and understand the beautiful struggle. We wanted every piece we created to be inspired by some form or part of the rat race and the love affair with money.

Our name comes from a British slang term for cash - Elizabeth. She is a central character to every individual’s story and has the ability to captivate us and lead us astray at any moment.

This poetic addiction gave our label its name. Because there always will be “Something About Elizabeth”.

THE WHY

The company was founded by three childhood friends in South West London. Having grown up together the three of them parted ways to pursue educations in Creative Advertising, Entrepreneurship and Music Journalism. The trio reunited in 2010 to create something special, a brand that wouldn’t stop growing.Meet Jake, Robi and Umair.

JakeJake Blankson is a specialist in logistics and maintaining a dynamic balance between the small details, and the main elements involved in the products, placement and transportation. He is a strategic, tactical and operational planner. He has a strong background in entrepreneurism, after starting a successful delivery company from scratch. More importantly Jake has a dab-hand at turning one pound sterling into two!

RobiRobi Ganguly is the creative partner of Something About Elizabeth. Having worked as a creative for four years in one of London’s best advertising agencies, he has devised and executed campaigns for some of the UK’s most loved brands. Skilled as a Creative Art Director he understands the brutal simplicity required in fashion design and comms to outthink the competition and build a following.

UmairUmair Afridi studied Business Enterprise and after graduating was given the opportunity to test his skills with a lettings agency based in London. Having helped the Directors grow the company from 3 offices to 8 he then set up a separate department with the Directors within the company to focus solely on generating additional business. With a sharp eye for detail and creative mind he is able to identify opportunities and develop strategies to maximize ideas that haven’t been explored before.

THE FOUNDERS

The brand takes timeless garments and injects them with a historical British flare. By exploring urban and colonial themes we have cultivated a truly British lens through which we look at society.

We design, produce and sew all of our garments in the UK. We screen print in Nottingham, produce our leather garments in East London and our shirt makers are based in South London.

We leave no stone unturned in our pursuit for the perfect fabrics and never compromise on quality. We go through numerous rounds of concept development, fittings and sampling before a product is given the green light.

Our rigorous process ensures that we have complete peace of mind knowing that our products meet the expectations of our most discerning customers.

THE PROCESS

LEATHER TAILCOATA statement piece that combines the clean cut of a traditional biker jacket with the formal opulence of English tails from the 1800s. Originating as a coat with the lower front cutaway to ease horse riding we’ve updated this concept to ease motorcycle riding.

We’ve used the softest lamb nappa lined with our exquisite cherub silk. Fitted with RiRi zips it comes made to order in a variety of colours.

THE QUEEN’S SPEECHThis design pays homage to one our biggest artistic inspirations, Rene Magritte. He famously painted ‘The Son of Man” and by using the Queen concealed by a microphone this piece conjures an emotional conflict created by hidden agendas and concealed messages.

THE QUEEN’S HEADTo create an elegant and visual impact we used Elizabeth herself. We wanted to enhance her image with our brand’s emotion. The closed eyes and a single tear became a commentary on the current state of British financial affairs. This also allowed us to explore different styles of tear for different demographics eg. the tattooed tear and the long drip.

THE STRUGGLE FOR POWERFor this piece we brought to life the story behind the British coat of arms. The fight for the Crown between the Lion and the Unicorn (England and Scotland). This battle was first described in a Lewis Carrol poem from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. We chose to create a dramatic portrayal of this epic battle as a beautiful marble sculpture. The battle is still going on today with parts of Scotland still fighting for their independence.

PRESTIGE WOVEN WOOL TRACKSUITA casual ensemble from the Something About Elizabeth repertoire. A fitted yet comfortable tracksuit made from our woven wool fabric. Ideal for adding a touch of class to long journeys and lazy days around the home, it has pockets, goat suede elbow patches and ankle RiRi zips to modify the fit.

CHERUB RENAISSANCE SILK TEEThe latter stages of the renaissance era signaled an intellectual transformation and education reform across Europe. This luxury tee attempts to gentrify the standard tee by replacing a bamboo segment with a cherub print silk. Finally we use lamb nappa leather to line the seam of the panel for a decadent finish.

STAMP STRAPBACKThis provocative cap is one of our most popular pieces. Based on the older English stamp designs of the past but with our tearful Elizabeth being the focal point. The serrated edge and silvery reflective surface of the embroidery stands out well from the wool body and leather strap. The nine pence represents the cheapest stamp inmates in prison can afford when posting letters.

BULLDOG SCARFThe houndstooth is a striking and practical fabric originating from the Scottish lowlands. We gave it a London twist by trimming it with lamb nappa leather, cutting it to a wider and narrower scarf dimension and calling it the ‘Bulldog’.

PRESTIGE WOVEN WOOL BLAZERSomething a little more formal, combining our woven wool fabric, goat suede lapels with cherub silk inner lining. Our beautifully fitted woman’s blazer also comes in a black and gold dogtooth variety.

“STYLO G IS A WALKING TALKING WORK OF ART AT THE MOBOS”

Stylo G is obviously more cultured than we thought as he was snapped wearing an art inspired outfit at the MOBO Awards 2013.

The reggae artist wore a white, leather tailcoat and t-shirt with cherubs from the renaissance era (yes I know my shit) printed on it, designed by Something About Elizabeth. He teamed his outfit with gold shoes from Kurt Geiger.

But just before I got a chance to ask the Soundbwoy artist if he would be interested in being the first work of art on my wall, he was whisked away to a VIP pre-party.
