More

“The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision.” - Helen Keller

“Where there is no vision, the people are unrestrained, but happy is he who keeps the law.” - Proverbs 29:18

To say that 2018 was an eventful year would be a large understatement. I am sure that in your life, as in mine, 2018 was full of a great many memorable events that shaped us and perhaps challenged us. Within DSUMC there was, I think, a very discernable shift toward the latter half of the year. It was as if things began to shift just beyond our perception, and there has appeared to be palpable anticipation that has filled our times of worship and fellowship.

Have you sensed it?

Many years ago, I remember the familiar smell of chlorine that accompanied my frequent trips to the swimming pool at Western Texas College. I was on the swim team and this was the place where we practiced and prepared. We were overseen by a sadistic coach (not really, but it felt that way) who would drive us to swim lap after lap so that we might be ready for our swim meets. As a side note, some months back I tried to swim in the same manner as I did when on the swim team. This was a mistake. Anyway, I remember being very excited for the meet and somewhat apprehensive as I prepared for my first event. I can recall approaching the starting blocks, which were not blocks at all, but rather an elevated platform off of which we would dive when the starting siren sounded. As we stood upon the platform, took our marks, and prepared for the starting sound, there was an anticipation of a great many things that flooded through my mind. Would I jump too early? Too late? Would I be behind after rising from the water? How cold was the water? What place would I finish? Would my coach be proud? Would he be embarrassed? What would happen as a result of this race?

These questions exemplified a sense of anticipation. I knew why I was here but was unsure of the outcome or where it might lead. The only thing I knew for sure was that I was on the block and I couldn’t go back.

We too are on the precipice of something new at DSUMC. It might sound cliché, and even a bit cheesy, but I truly believe that 2018 was a season of preparation, an alignment, for what is to come this year. As I have prayed for DSUMC and how we might move forward into the new year, a word keeps bubbling to the surface in my mind.

More.

As in do more, grow more, risk more, be more, and hunger for more of God.

I believe God is calling us to be more missional than we ever have been and to reach forward to obtain the high calling of God in Christ. Great days are ahead for DSUMC and I believe it is time for all of us to press into God more and join Him to change the world.

Happy February!

It's hard to believe that we are well on our way into 2019! I am looking forward to what God has in store for each of us individually, for Pathways School, for DSUMC, and the larger Dripping Springs community. We are focusing on the “shield of faith” from the armor of God in chapel this month and learning great stories of faith like Peter walking on water and Jesus healing the soldier’s daughter and the bleeding woman.

The children are putting their faith into action once again to share God’s love and abundant blessings with our Kids Can Mission. Students are bringing in canned/dry food donations, sorting them according to food groups, learning about nutrition, and helping others at the same time. We also are collecting new and gently used coats this year. You are welcome to contribute to our collection in the Pathways foyer. We can’t wait to load up the wagons for delivery to Helping Hands in a few weeks!

Come worship the Lord God Almighty and find the abundance Jesus promised: "I have come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly." John 10:10b

The abundance promised by Christ Jesus is found in the richness of LIFE in Him that has nothing to do with gold or silver. It is in serving our Lord by allowing Him to work through us to help others that He lavishes the feeling of abundance in our souls. It is in that total surrender to God

that His grace flows into us through the Spirit. So let us give our body, soul and spirit, heart, mind and will to God; to take Him for our full portion and joy and look upon nothing else as any part of our happiness unless it involves loving others through Jesus Christ. Have the trust to pray, “Holy Spirit, I give you total control – come live in me and through me today and allow me to love others as you love them. What do you have for me today? Here I am Lord; send me.” It may be writing notes to those needing a love note or it may be a mission trip – what will it be for you today? Be blessed to be a blessing this year!

Thinking of ushering or serving Holy Communion? Please let me know which service is best for you to serve the Lord. Ushering, serving Communion or reading liturgy in our services is one blessing we receive in being able to love and serve God and each other. Check out this link for descriptions of ushers, communion servers and liturgists. http://www.dsumc.org/worship/ All should experience the joy of serving (helping out) during a worship service. Contact Linda Snow at [email protected], or 512-619-9975, or talk to me at church! Let me walk you through how we serve – you can do it too!!

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men,

knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.

Colossians 3:23-24

Kairos Prison Ministry

” . . . I was in prison and you came to visit me.” Matthew 25:36

DSUMC has been a major supporter of Kairos Prison Ministry for more than 20 years! Kairos is a 3-day spiritual retreat in prison, patterned after the Walk to Emmaus in the free world. Kairos has been bringing the love of Christ to our incarcerated brothers and sisters worldwide for more than 40 years, building Christian community in the prison, reducing recidivism, and giving our incarcerated sisters and brothers in white new hope. Kairos Outside is a ministry for female family members of incarcerated men and women. For information about Kairos Inside, go to the Kairos of Texas website, kairostexas.org and for Kairos Outside, go to kairosoutsidecentraltexas.org.

Team meetings began in January for Spring 2019 Kairos Inside Weekends at Hughes (men) and Lane Murray (women), both in Gatesville. The Kairos Weekend at Hughes is on February 28th – March 3rd, and the Kairos Weekend at Lane Murray is April 23rd - 27th. Kairos Outside of Central Texas is having a Weekend in the fall, September 27th - 29th.

Your support for Hughes and Lane Murray Kairos is needed now in a number of ways including prayer, financial support, and making posters and placemats. You also can support Kairos by attending a closing ceremony, a powerful worship experience! The deadline for applying for the Hughes Kairos closing is February 6th. Please visit the Kairos table in the Fellowship Hall to see how you can help, and to register for a closing ceremony.

If you have questions about Hughes Kairos or want to get involved, contact Dave Sutherland at 512-940-7244 or [email protected]. If want to get involved with Lane Murray Kairos, contact Linda Snow at 512-619-9975 or [email protected] and for information on Kairos Outside or have questions, contact Chéri Heldstab at [email protected].

Hurricane Harvey Recovery Work

18 months after Hurricane Harvey, there is still a lot of work to do!

We sent a team down to help rebuild in December, have another scheduled in February and

plan to continue to send teams until the work is done! If you are interested in joining a team,

or are looking for an easy, short-term mission trip for your family or small group, you can

Victoria TX February 15th - 18th

I have put in a reservation request for a team of 8-10 workers in Victoria February 15th - 18th. This is a holiday weekend, so I am hoping to include some 'working stiffs' who couldn't otherwise go. I need to get a good number of interested participants ASAP. There is another team scheduled in there that weekend so we may be limited in space.

If you are interested in going, please e-mail me as soon as you know. We will probably be doing drywall, painting and/ or roofing work once again but we need to be open and ready for whatever they throw at us.

NEW GRIEFSHARE CLASS

A new GriefShare class at Dripping Springs UMC began SUNDAY, January 13

from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. A light lunch is served at the beginning of class each Sunday.

This meeting is in room 106 in the hall near the Sanctuary. We welcome you to our

small group of new friends. Please feel free to join the present class – each session stands alone as a significant

resource for healing.

GriefShare is a 13-week seminar for people 18 years and older who are navigating through life after a loved one’s

death. Our Stephen Ministers and other faithful servants facilitate the class and will walk with you through this time

of healing. This helpful, encouraging seminar features weekly video interviews with top Christian experts on grief and

recovery topics as seen from a biblical perspective. There are personal testimonies from people who have experienced

all the tangled emotions after bereavement. The video seminar is combined with support group discussion of the

materials presented during the video. There is also a workbook filled with weekly exercises, practical tips, encouraging

words, a gospel presentation and much more. In sharing your feelings and thoughts with others who are also grieving,

you will find loving support and encouragement to find your way back to a new normal.

If you have questions or want a private meeting to see if GriefShare is right for you, please contact Linda Snow at

512-619-9975 or email [email protected].

Home in a Week

Thanks to everyone who participated in Home in a Week again this year. We were able to help bless

the Carbajal Family with a new home in Mission, Texas. This could not happen without the financial

support, the volunteer participation and the prayers offered up by a lot of people.

We plan to participate again this year in this life-changing ministry for another family .

Watch for more news!

American Heritage Girls and Trail Life News...

American Heritage Girls Troop TX-0522 and Trail Life USA Troop TX-0107 are ministries of DSUMC. Linda Snow is the Charter Organization Representative for TLUSA TX-0107,

and Chéri Heldstab is the Charter Organization Representative for AHG TX-0522.

The Trail Life troop is currently preparing to attend the Austin-San Antonio-South Texas Winter Camp. Trailmen of all ages will be participating in the annual event at the HEB Family Foundation.

One of the program emphases of Trail Life USA is fitness. “There are four elements of fitness; mental, emotional, moral and physical. All four benefit from a good diet, exercise and plenty of rest. … And how much exercise do your morals get when you put difficult decisions off on others! Your morals do not get enough rest when you fail to recognize leadership in others and delegate responsibility as needed.”

Are you looking for Christ-centered youth programs which are fun? We have them: American Heritage Girls for girls K-12 and Trail Life USA for boys K-12. We have camping, badge work, service, fellowship, and lots of fun. For information about AHG contact Troop Coordinator Cheryl Calvert: [email protected]. For information about TLUSA contact Troop Master Patrick Welton: [email protected].
