NEWS

Songsalive! San Francisco November Showcase – The November 2 Songsalive! SF Showcase at Cyprian's was an enjoyable and mellow evening of acoustic music. We had a singer/songwriter named Alex come from Novato with his girlfriend Kathryn. Alex played 12-string acoustic guitar and sang all originals. The father-daughter duo Evo and Angel from San Francisco sang their interpretations of classic folk tunes. Poet Francine Brevetti read one of her pieces and a Rumi poem, while Kevin accompanied on guitar. Everyone expressed how they enjoyed the acoustic space at Cyprian's. All said they would come to the next event, which will be part of the NOPNA Holiday Party on Friday December 7. -Kevin Barnard Songsalive! Orange County November Showcase – I have been trying to convince Stevie Blue to join us for one of our Songsalive OC Showcases for some time now -- tonight, he finally did! Up on stage and ably assisted by his friend Mark Galloway, Stevie did not disappoint. Some smokin' electric blues on some beautiful vintage instruments, and of course Stevie's power-blast vocals. And washboard rhythms thrown in for good measure! After Stevie Blue it was the welcome return of Tom Hacker, who has been away from the scene for a couple of years. In the interim it seems that he's only gotten better: His guitar, his songs, and of course his powerful voice were all in tip-top shape. Now we take a break from Showcases for the holidays, and come roaring back into the thick of things in January! -Rod O'Riley

REVIEWS OF RECENT EVENTS Songsalive! Chicago November Workshop – On November 10th, Songsalive! Chicago hosted a very educational workshop at the Beat Kitchen. There were 5 people total in attendance. Three people presented songs. The quality of songs was high, and the feedback given was great. In the second half, I discussed "Orchestration for Songwriters." I talked about the skills one needs as a basis for learning orchestration, the steps in the process of orchestration, what instrumentation is and why it is important to orchestration, and the approaches one can take to orchestration. I also assigned a homework assignment to be completed before the workshop on arranging in March. Each songwriter is to complete a lead sheet for an original or cover song by the March workshop. It was a very informative workshop! -Mary Lemanski Songsalive! Grass Valley November Showcase – The November Songsalive showcase back at my studio, Alta Sierra Music Center was fun for all. 6 people attended. My guest performer, Tim Auckerman and his buddy Joe performed some interesting original folk rock inspired tunes. It was more informal than usual, but given the small group it was appropriate anyway. -Michael Gregory

Songsalive! Holiday Party at The Mint – On Dec 4, Songsalive! LA hosted our annual Holiday Party at The Mint LA. It was a bumper night! 18 artists performed to a full house, with extraordinary talent, great songs, and a whole bunch of holiday tunes interweaved. We had a best costume prize which went to Brooke Trout, and the over-$2000 worth raffle prizes (offered by a ton of Songsalive! Music Industry Partners) went to Suzy Husner and Michael Vanags (also performers). Key highlight, Katie Garibaldi received the 2012 Songsalive! Songwriter Of The Year Award, with a trophy. She was very surprised and honored. Details at www.songsalive.org/songwriteroftheyearaward.htm -Gilli Moon Songsalive! San Francisco December Showcase – Live music and performances from Songsalive! SF Songwriters Kevin Barnard and Katie Garibaldi. Also appearing were local SF bands Walking in Sunlight and Shake Your Peace. Food and raffle sponsored by Whole Foods, Bistro Central Parc, Bi-Rite, Rare Device and Salt & Honey. Cash bar with local wine provided by Green Barrel. Fun for the kids too! Movie and pizza with the cyprian's arc Parents Night Out sitters from 6-9 pm. Kids activities sponsored by Jennifer Rosdail of Paragon Real Estate Group. Celebrating the end of another great year in the neighborhood! -Kevin Barnard Songsalive! San Francisco December Showcase – The Long Island Chapter is still going strong even though we switched days from the 1st Wed of the month to the 1st Tuesday of the month. The people who have come out to the workshop say it is invaluable information they are receiving not only about their songs they are presenting and the feedback they are getting, but from the information they are learning about the music industry in general. Looking forward to a great New Year of song critique workshops! -Steve Archdeacon

REVIEWS OF RECENT EVENTS Songsalive! Los Angeles November Workshop – The November Los Angeles Songsalive! Workshop series continued Sunday in North Hollywood at The Cahuenga General Store with an Standing Room Only turnout. Our guest speaker was songwriter/ producer Guy Marshall whose topic was entitled, "Think Like a Music Producer and Make Your Songs Broadcast/Radio Ready for Success!" Guy presented 3 before and after examples of songs and walked through how he developed them from scratch ”demos” into full blown broadcast ready productions. -Rik Lawrence Songsalive! Chicago November Showcase – On November 29th, Songsalive! Chicago hosted our last event for 2013. I kicked off the showcase with an acoustic pop-rock set performed on the Heartland Cafe's in-house upright piano. Danny Hickey was back this month again with his Neil Young-esque folk rock. The crowd really seemed to enjoy the show. See you in 2013! -Mary Lemanski www.songsalive.org/chapters.htm
