Spring FootballMedia Information

PRACTICES As a general rule, all spring practices are open to the media and the general public. Please contact Brian Fremund, Associate Athletic Director for Strategic Communications, in advance if you are interested in conducting interviews and/or attending a practice session, so an escort can be made available.

INTERVIEWS In-person interviews with members of the coaching staff and student-athletes can be arranged by calling or e-mailing Fremund. Interviews with student-athletes MUST be arranged in advance through the Strategic Communications Offi ce. Coach Campbell is generally available 30 minutes before practice, while he and student-athletes are available immediately following practice. Phone interviews are also available, but will be arranged around the student-athletes’ class and practice schedules. Student-athletes’ phone numbers are not available under any circumstance. All phone interview requests must be made 24 hours prior.

SPRING GAME Credentials are not required for the South Alabama spring game, although working members of the media who plan to cover the event need to contact Fremund in advance in order to get on the parking list at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. Final statistics will be available to the media following the game.

SPRING GAME POSTGAME INTERVIEWS After a 10-minute cooling off period, requested players and coaches will be made available to members of the media. Requested players and coaches will be escorted by a South Alabama Strategic Communica-tions staff member to a designated interview area on the fi eld at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.

SOUTH ALABAMA FOOTBALL 2019 SPRING PROSPECTUS NOTES/INFORMATION

SPRING CALENDAR NOTES The annual iHeart Radio Red-Blue Game to close out the spring campaign will be held at Ladd-Peebles Stadium, with all other practices and scrimmages slated to take place at the James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility on the South Alabama campus. In case of inclement weather, USA will work out at the Jaguar Training Center. The Jags will hold a pair of full scrimmages prior to the spring game, with one coming before the school’s Spring Break and one after. The program’s annual Pro Day is set to be held on campus beginning at 8 a.m. on Monday, March 25.

ANOTHER YEAR, ANOTHER QUARTERBACKThe Jaguars will begin spring drills expecting four quarterbacks to take snaps during the initial week of practices. Cephus Johnson is the only member of the group to have seen action or started a game at the NCAA level after throwing for 120 yards and three touchdowns in eight appearances in 2018, with the group also including Desmond Trotter — who sat out as a redshirt in the fall — junior-college transfer Ty-lan Morton and freshman Tanner McGee. No matter who wins the job, it will mark the sixth straight sea-son that South will have a different individual serve as the primary starting quarterback; Ross Metheny (2012-13) was the last Jag to start multiple years at the position.

TRA BIENRising senior Tra Minter heads a group of ive indi-viduals at running back on the spring practice depth — the other four are all true freshman — coming off a season in which he set several school records. In the inale, a 31-28 victory over Coastal Carolina, Minter became the irst individual in program history to surpass 200 yards rushing in a game, with the ef-fort leaving him with a school season record 1,803 all-purpose yards as well. A second-team all-Sun Belt Conference selection both as a return specialist and an

all-purpose back, he ended the year best in the league and eighth nationally in all-purpose yards per contest.

ON THE LINEThe Jags are slated to return just four starters on de-fense in the fall, but two of those individuals are rising seniors who earned all-conference recognition a year ago. Tyree Turner posted 51 total stops and 10 tack-les for loss with four sacks — all career-high totals — to earn second-team honors, as he enters his inal season at the collegiate level needing ½ stop behind the line to enter the top ive on South’s all-time list. He is joined up front by Jordon Beaton, an honorable mention selection in 2018 after recording six tackles for loss including a pair of sacks among his 30 total stops after coming to USA as a junior-college transfer.

BAKER BACK FOR MOREKawaan Baker wasted little time making an impact his irst season as a starter, scoring three touchdowns — two rushing, one on a reception — in the 2018 opener against Louisiana Tech. The rising junior wide receiver would end up reaching the end zone 13 times in all, tying a school season record irst set by Bran-don Ross during the program’s inaugural 2009 cam-paign, while ending the year third on the squad with 839 all-purpose yards.

SEEKING SPECIAL TEAMS HELPThe Jaguars will enter the fall without an individual who has kicked a ield goal or punted at the collegiate level after the departures of Gavin Patterson and Corliss Waitman at the end of last season. Frankie Onate will compete for both jobs after redshirting in 2018 — he did kick off 21 times as a true freshman the previous year — while P Johnny Kilgo sat out as a freshman last season. Patterson ended his career sec-ond on the school’s all-time list with 35 ield goals and 204 total points while Waitman’s average of 42.66 yards per punt over the last four years is the best in program history.

STEVE CAMPBELL

HEAD COACH

TROY ’88SECOND SEASON

CAREER RECORD: 162-62RECORD AT SOUTH ALABAMA: 3-9

Steve Campbell was hired as head football coach at the University of South Alabama

prior to the 2018 season after recording three national championships as both a student-athlete

and coach in addition to posting a career .750 winning percentage over 19 years while leading four different institutions. He enters his second season at the helm of the program with an overall re-cord of 162-62 (72.3%) and a 63-32 (66.3%) mark at the NCAA level. In his irst year guiding the Jaguars, South faced a schedule that featured eight opponents who would go on to play in a postseason bowl including both participants in the inaugural Sun Belt Conference Championship Game as well as American Athletic Conference West Division champion Memphis. Under his direction nine Jags picked up all-Sun Belt honors and senior wide receiver Jamarius Way — who was among the top three in the league in catches and receiving yards per contest — received an invitation to participate in the an-nual NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. His efforts also helped junior running back Tra Minter lead the conference and rank in the top 10 in the country in all-purpose yards per game, highlight-ed by the irst 200-yard game rushing in program history in a season-ending victory over Coastal Carolina. Campbell, 52, came to South after a four-year stint at Central Arkansas, where he guided the Bears to 33-15 mark including a record of 24-3 in the Southland Conference his last three seasons, during which time the Bears inished no lower than second in the league standings. UCA went 10-2 and

claimed the conference title with a 9-0 mark in 2017 to earn the No. 4 seed in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision playoffs. In addition to being named the Southland Coach of the Year, the Bears claimed four of the league’s other six individual awards, with 10 irst-team all-conference selections and another 10 individuals picking up second-team and honorable mention rec-ognition. After going 6-6 in his irst season at the Conway, Ark., institution, Campbell led the program to a 7-4 record (7-2 in the league) the following fall. Under his guidance in 2016, the Bears posted a 10-3 mark — including going 8-1 in conference action — after winning their irst-round FCS playoff contest. Prior to his stint at UCA, Campbell led Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College to a record of 87-22 and the 2007 National Junior College Athletic As-sociation national championship in 10 seasons at the helm of the program. During his inal eight years at MGCCC, the Bulldogs spent 115 consecutive weeks in the NJCAA top 25, claimed six Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) South Division titles and won the Mississippi Ju-nior College championship on three occasions. He was twice named the na-tional Coach of the Year, earning those honors three times at both the confer-ence and region levels while 28 of his student-athletes received All-America accolades and 17 were selected Academic All-Americans. Before his arrival, Bulldog football had not made it to the state playoffs since 1986. Campbell was also the head coach at Delta State for three seasons from 1999-01, posting a 27-8 record that included a 14-1 mark and the NCAA Divi-sion II national championship in 2000 when he was selected the Chevrolet National Coach of the Year. In his irst head coaching job, at Southwest Missis-sippi Community College during the 1997 and ’98 campaigns, he led the Bears to their irst winning season in 12 years while going 12-8 overall. In his irst 19 seasons as a head coach, Campbell — who was inducted into the NJCAA Hall of Fame in 2014, and also served as the President of the NJCAA Coaches Association in 2012 — never guided a team that inished with a losing record while compiling a 159-53 overall mark.

Campbell began his coaching career as a graduate assistant under Pat Dye at Auburn in 1988-89, and during that time the Tigers would go 20-4 overall and 12-2 in the Southeastern Conference while playing in the Sugar Bowl and de-feating Ohio State in the Hall of Fame Bowl. He moved on to become the offen-sive line coach (1990-91) and offensive coordinator (1992) at Delta State, also serving stints as the offensive coordinator at Nicholls State (1993-95) and as running backs coach at Southwest Mississippi C.C. (1996). In 2002, Campbell was the offensive coordinator at Middle Tennessee, and the following year he coached the offensive line at Mississippi State on the staff of Jackie Sherrill. After beginning his collegiate career at Southeastern Louisiana, Campbell moved on to Troy where he was a part of the Trojans’ 1987 NCAA Division II national championship team; during his two years with the program the team went 22-3 with a 16-0 record in the Gulf South Conference en route to claiming back-to-back league titles. He was named irst-team all-conference at center his senior year. A native of Cantonment, Fla., Campbell received his undergraduate degree in economics from Troy in 1988, and a master’s degree in business adminis-tration from Auburn in 1990. He and his wife, Shellie, have three children: Kelsie, Steven Jr. and Tate.
