Dear Soul Purpose community,

This month I am inviting everyone to “think pink” and help us promote breast cancer awareness. We have a special “think pink” promotion but most important, I want each of you to make sure you practice everyday wellness so you can realize all of your dreams. Unfortunately, too many people will have their dreams tragically interrupted because of a breast cancer diagnosis. According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF), breast cancer is second only to lung cancer as a cause of cancer death in women in the United States. It’s estimated that nearly 200,000 women will be diagnosed with this disease in 2012, and 40,000 will die.

Although it is women who most often are diagnosed with breast cancer, men can also get the disease. An estimated 1,700 men are diagnosed each year, with 450 fatalities.

You can lessen your chances of getting this disease. The NBCF says as little as four hours of exercise per week can lower a woman’s risk of breast cancer since exercise “pumps up the immune system and lowers estrogen levels.” It’s also recommended that you eat nutritious, low-fat foods and plenty of fruits and vegetables—fat triggers estrogen production that can fuel tumor growth.

And of course, it’s vital that you give yourself monthly breast self-exams and have annual physical and regular mammograms. According to the National Cancer Institute, women in their 40s and older should have mammograms every one to two years.To help fight breast cancer, we encourage you to purchase our Think Pink Gift Set because we’ll be donating a percentage of proceeds from these sales to the Black Women’s Health Imperative; The Lady bug Foundation. Both organizations help women who are battling breast cancer and also work to raise awareness and funds to eliminate the disease. In addition, this month we will be partnering with the Black Women’s Health Imperative and we will put a shower care for women’s breast health in all of our orders during the month of October.Remember, to be empowered means feeling and looking great and taking care of yourself every day—and that means doing all that you can to avoid diseases like breast cancer.
