Introduction This Guide lists sources available within Sheffield Libraries Archives and Information for the study of the development and consumption of food and drink through the last 500 years. It lists references to food and drink - including cookery books and recipes, dietary sheets and menus and other items in the collections at Sheffield City Archives and Local Studies Library. A search of the service’s catalogues and card indexes may reveal additional items of relevance to this topic. Note this guide excludes the subject of food adulteration and food safety. It also excludes temperance for which there is a separate guide.

Oral History Recordings Sheffield Local Studies Library has a collection of over 200 oral history recordings which were made in the 1980s. Older people were interviewed about many aspects of their lives. Some of the recording refer to food and direct, etc. (Sheffield Local Studies Library: Oral History Recordings) Books, Documents, etc. (listed in date order) Occasionally deeds will provide details of land use - for example orchards. For example, indenture of lease, dated at Norton 1399/1400 - fuel required for baking or brewing was to be the subject of a special arrangement (Sheffield City Archives: JC/4/47) Search the City Archives catalogue for terms such as orchards or brewhouse (Sheffield City Archives)

Letter from Hugh Wentworth, Malton [Ireland], to Rockingham, 17 Dec 1763 Encloses a recipe for brown bread as a remedy for constipation (Sheffield City Archives: WWM/R/1/396) Wentworth Woodhouse corn accounts, 1765 - 1850 These accounts record in meticulous detail the corn delivered at Wentworth from various sources (home farms, tithe, purchase, etc.) and corn given out for a great variety of uses (as House, swans, pheasants, Swinton stables, etc.). Entries are normally in columns for oats, beans, wheat, rye and barley. Trade directories (1774 - 1974) provide lists of shops, businesses and occupations as well as advertisements. For example Gales and Martin’s Directory of Sheffield of 1787 lists such occupations as grocer, tea dealer, milk and flour dealer, dealer in butter and groceries, cheese factor, poulterer, dealer in bacon, wine and spirit dealer, etc (Sheffield Local Studies Library and Sheffield City Archives) Sale plans may contain details of land and buildings connected to food and drink, for example, beerhouses, orchards, dairies, shops, etc., 18th - 21st centuries (Sheffield Local Studies Library: sale plans) Wells, Roger A. E., Dearth and Distress in Yorkshire 1793 - 1802 (University of York, 1977) (refers to grain crises / food riots, etc.) (Sheffield Local Studies Library: MP 3549 M) Parish records can record expenditure on foodstuffs, particular in relation to feeding the poor, for example, the overseers of the poor accounts for Handsworth detail expenditure on milk and bread, 1798 - 1812 (Sheffield City Archives: X545/1) Letters, circulars, etc about the price of bread, 1795, 1799 - 1800 (Sheffield City Archives: WWM/F/47/34-44) Letter from Milton Fitzwilliam to Rev John Cleaver, 24 Dec 1800 Gives reasons for his disapproval of supplying bread to the poor.
