Birdlist
The total number of different birds seen on 23 days of birding in the two South African provinces ended up round 300 species
I guess a dozen or more species is missing do to lack of knowledge of their voices. Especially owls but also several forest birds like Yellow-
Throated Woodland Warbler or Fynbos specialist like Knysna Warbler and Victorin’s Warbler. With a little more effort and attention one the
northern migratory waders at Velddrif and West Coast National Park a couple more species such as Curlew, Bar-Tailed Godwit and different
sandpipers might have been on the birdlist as well
Most sought after species which was not seen include African Black Duck, Chestnut-Banded Plover, Ground Woodpecker, Pink-Billed Lark,
Sclater’s Lark and Karoo Eremomela. The most common and widespread species that surprisingly was not seen must be Cape Penduline-Tit

Numbers & Score
The number codes in the birdlist is the maximum of birds seen in one day on each location
1: I 1 4: IIII 10-20 7: IIIIIII 100-250 10: IIIIIIIIII 1000 +
2: II 2-5 5: IIIII 20-50 8: IIIIIIII 250-500
3: III 5-10 6: IIIIII 50-100 9: IIIIIIIII 500-1000
The total score in the birdlist is a multiply of the number of sites and the number of birds
Note that the number code “I” is counting 1½ !
Example 1: Species 144 – Burchell’s Coucal
• Seen on 3 different sites: Total score is calculated as: 3 x 1½ x 1½ x 1½ = 10
Example 2: Species 152 – White-Backed Mousebird
• Seen on 6 different sites. Total score is calculated as: 6 x 3 x 2 x 1½ x 3 x 2 x 4 = 1296
The colour scale is a result of the total score indicating how widespread and common the different species were on the birding tour
