Whats best for youHelping the immune system
With the cold and flu season fast approaching, it is
time to think about how best to prepare our bodies for
fighting off the winter bugs.
It goes without saying that a healthy diet and lifestyle
will support the bodys defences, and increasing the
intake of vitamins A C and D and the mineral Zinc,
through foods, can help. Foods high in these nutrients
are brightly coloured fruits and vegetables, dairy
products, oily fish, wholegrains, pulses, lean meats
and eggs, so ensure a range of these foods are eaten
every day.
Lifestyle can also effect your ability to fight infections,
to help support your immune system exercise
regularly, reduce or limit your intake of alcohol and
caffeine, drink plenty of fresh water, keep warm, get
plenty of sleep and dont skip meals.
If you want to use supplements then there are a few
you can try. The evidence for and against the
effectiveness of supplements is still mixed, there is a
lot of positive research that cant be ignored, but on
the other hand there is not enough to label a remedy
as a cure. However, taking supplements is popular
and here is a short list of those that have been shown,
in some studies, to boost the immune system and
help the body fight against cold and flu.
Sambucol
Contains elderberry extract with added vitamin C and
Zinc. Elderberry has been shown to have anti-viral
properties.
Vitamin C
Some studies suggest that vitamin C may reduce the
length and symptoms of a cold. Be aware that high
doses of vitamin C can cause diarrhoea.
Probiotics
Part of the bodys natural defences is the healthy
bacteria that live in the gut. Taking a daily probiotic
can boost the number of beneficial bacteria that
colonise here, especially if you have recently had
antibiotics. Be aware that some probiotics contain
FOS (fructooligosaccharides) which can cause severe
bloating in some individuals.
Zinc lozenges
May reduce the length and severity of a cold. Look for
lozenges containing zinc gluconate, zinc gluconate-
glycine, or zinc acetate. Zinc sprays should be
avoided due to some reports that they may damage
sense of smell.
Andrographis
Studies have shown this herb as having immune
enhancing actions and appear to reduce the severity
of the common cold.
As with any medication, supplement or herb, please
consult a qualified healthcare professional prior to
taking them to ensure they are suitable for you.
Have a healthy and happy winter.

The Marketing Clinic
expert marketing
common-sense from Dee
Blick, one of the UKs
most inspirational
marketers.
I realised the compelling
power of public speaking
when asked to speak at
the British Franchise
Exhibition at the NEC. I
hadnt done anything on such a grand stage before so
it was a request that filled me with fear. But
afterwards, I was deluged with opportunities.
In the years that have followed Ive become a polished
public speaker and am now paid for my efforts. Over
two articles, Im going to share my public speaking
tips with you whats helped me to move from being
an enthusiastic amateur into a pro.
Treat the task of public speaking with respect.
Speakers that look and sound confident have usually
invested hours preparing the content of their talk and
practising their delivery. When asked to speak at an
event Ill earmark half a day to scope out the content,
making sure its appropriate for the audience. Then
its down to practising and the all-important positive
self talk. I use car journeys for this. If you belong to a
networking group seize every opportunity to stand up
and speak to the members, delivering your 60 second
elevator statement in the middle of the room (not
behind your chair). Build your confidence for the
bigger stuff.
Once you have scoped your talk out in full and timed
it from start to finish commit the key points to
numbered cue cards.
If a lecturn is available, use it to give you two free
hands. If you have to stand in front of your audience
without one, your cue cards can be held in one hand.
Quivering sheets of paper show youre nervous.
Practise engaging body language.
Look in the mirror. Keep your head up so your airways
are clear, smile warmly, move your arms around, take
some steps forwards and to the side so you neither
look nor feel rigid. Nod, pause and thank your
imaginary audience. At my final dress rehearsal, I
usually wear the outfit I have chosen for the event
which helps with the familiarisation process.
Make sure that one or two elements of your talk can
be taken out.
I was recently asked to speak at an event and
because the previous speaker overran by 15 minutes,
I had to reduce my talk by 10 minutes I had allowed
for this and so remained calm.
From the moment youre asked to speak, begin a
positive visualisation process.
Imagine standing in front of your audience, looking
and feeling fantastic, each person hanging on to your
every word. When those negative thoughts creep in
as they do, tell yourself that youre a fantastic speaker.
Most of the audience will be admiring you for doing
something they couldnt contemplate.

Adrenal fatigue
Obviously as nutritionists (nutritional therapists)we are involved with working with people toimprove the diet. Sometimes when people arefeeling exhausted it is really because they areeating a diet that does not support their energyrequirements someone on a very lowcarbohydrate diet (somehow these days itseems that all carbs are classed as evil!) orsomeone eating loads of sugar and sweettreats, for example, is likely to experiencetrouble with their blood sugar (fluctuatingenergy levels) other reasons for tiredness mightbe:
Low levels of iron
Poor diet low in nutrients, includingessential fats
Not enough water
Not enough sleep or poor quality sleep
Infections or recovery from infections
Thyroid function
Too much exercise/not enough exercise
Recovery from infection/virus
One other area a nutritional therapist might
consider is adrenal function. The adrenal
glands are where your stress hormones come
from and allow you to cope with stress.
Medically low adrenal function is not
recognised, only a complete lack of hormone
is recognised as a medical condition and is
really rare (Addisons disease) although
President Kennedy suffered and managed to
cover it up successfully.
It is possible that your adrenal glands can get
tired if you have been under stress for a number
of years without respite. It means that the
production of cortisol (flight and fight hormone)
is reduced you do need stress hormones to
feel energetic and to cope with the stress that
is thrown at us. There are many ways to look
after the adrenal glands:
Get to bed early 10.00pm would be ideal
Eat a diet that balances your energy across
the day (low GI diet would be ideal)
Take time for relaxation breathing is
important
Take time for exercise but make sure that
you dont over do it if you are tired. Try
yoga/pilates too
Make sure you are taking your holidays
Draw your boundaries at work make sure
that you get home at a decent time

As we move into autumn and winter, our focusshifts to a more sedentary indoor time. Intypical Wind in the Willows fashion this alsotends to include more sleep. It makes sensethat humans should take more rest and sleepduring the darker months. Unfortunately a goodnights sleep can be somewhat elusiveoccasionally for everyone at one time oranother. However for ever increasing numbersof the population it has become a constantproblem. So I have put together a fewsuggestions that can help.
Restless nights and short sleep patterns can bedown to mental activity, varying from worry, anxiety, excitement and over stimulation toname but a few.
I would urge anyone who is having problemssleeping, to start taking some of the commonsense steps. Caffeine is a notorious culprit, soobviously do not have any caffeinated drinksafter 6.00 pm. Also be conscious of using thelatter part of the evening as a winding downperiod. Avoid action or fear movies just beforebedtime and relax more by listening to gentlemusic or reading. A walk out in the fresh airbefore bed can help to unwind if you haveworries about forthcoming events.
Moving to the bedroom, in my opinion thetelevision in the bedroom is a definite no. This
should be sanctuary; a place of neutrality andpeace. The ancient Chinese philosophers heldthat the bedroom should be for sleeping andlove making only. A CD player to play gentlerelaxing sounds or music on is very beneficial. The use of aromatherapy oils such as Lavendercan have a calming effect. You can use an oilburner or a room/pillow spray. Crystals arereported to help and placing a piece of RoseQuartz under the pillow or beside the bed issaid to re-balance your energy and aidrelaxation.
If the problem is a pestered mind try BachFlower Essence White Chestnut. Take a fewdrops in a glass of water, to be sippedoccasionally until sleep occurs. If you awakeand the anxiety returns, take a few drops ofRescue Remedy, another flower essence. Inother cases over-stimulation and restlessnesscan be due to too much adrenalin in the bloodstream. The homeopathic remedy Coffea willhelp to address this.
A common solution that many people tend toturn to for sleep is alcohol. Though this cancertainly knock you out the effect is short livedand hardly beneficial! Aside from the obvioushabit dependency factor it also tends to re-awaken you too soon with the necessary needfor liquids and emptying of the bladder. If theproblem is long term, then you really need toseek professional help from a qualifiedhomeopath or other natural therapist, toexamine more thoroughly any underlyingcauses that are aggravating sleep.
Finally a good old fashioned milky drink atbedtime is worth trying. I noticed that there isnow a night time milk available which isclaiming to be rich in Melatonin. This is thesleep hormone, so I for one will be giving thatproduct a whirl and adding it to my Horlicks.
Wishing you all a good nights sleep.
Ken Teppin (M.C.P.H)

Our journey began in June 2010, 5 months after thedevastating earthquake in Haiti (January 2010.) Kellydeveloped a love for the people of Haiti and felt astrong calling to go to there to help. Everywhere shewent people were talking about Haiti and when sheturned on the T.V there was always something onabout Haiti. As much as she tried to escape from itand ignore it, the desire kept getting stronger. Notknowing exactly why she was having these feelings orwhat she was meant to do she approached me aboutthem. She explained how she felt about Haiti to meand immediately I caught the bug. We decided on thatday that we were going to go to Haiti, no idea whenor how, but we set about this long process.
In November 2010 we started planning our firstfundraising project, a charity formal held in La Monhotel on 12th February 2011. We arranged a liveauction, raffle, meal and DJ and with over 300 peopleattending, we raised over 2000. After such a greatsuccess we planned many more fundraisers includinga car boot sale, pamper evening, chilli and chill night, quiz sheets, a zumba class and a married men v singlemen football match. All of which were a huge success, raising a total of over 4000.
Many of these fundraising events had occurredwithout us knowing when or with who we where goingto go to Haiti. It was not until around June 2011 thatwe confirmed that we would be going through Elim
International missions. Two missionaries, BeckyHaldane from Glasgow and Jackie Griffiths fromWales, had moved to Haiti in February 2011 to live forthree years. It was evident that we would go over andlive with them, as well as working with them andanother project called Foursquare. Still not knowingwhen we would be going we continued to fundraise, believing that it would be soon. We eventually wereemailed a date, four week before we were due to go.After accepting this offer immediately, we set aboutbooking flights and arranging vaccinations and estasfor the trip, which was going to be 2nd 16thSeptember 2011.
After a long journey to Newark and then to Haiti, weeventually arrived in Port-au Prince on Saturday 3rdSeptember. As we were coming into land, the realityof where we were going struck us. From the plane, ourview of shantytowns and collapsed buildings shockedus. Driving through the busy street was like nothing Ihave ever seen before- people, cars, animalseverywhere and horns blasting.
We began our work with foursquare on the Sundaywhich consisted of taking down a clinic that hadrecently lost its funding. This was extremely difficultas this clinic previously helped over 42,000 people ayear and was now taken from them. Over the next twoweeks, we had plenty to do. We worked on site atfoursquare most mornings helping to paint, weed and

construct, as well as making resources for the schoolthat was going to start. We were also given theopportunity to help take part in teacher training for theteachers who were about to embark on the newschool year. This was extremely rewarding to see howthe teachers teach with very little resources. As atrainee teacher, it opened my eyes a lot and providedKelly and myself with the opportunity to provide ideasand also help to make teaching resources for theteachers with the intention to motivate new teachingmethods and encourage children to learn.
Most afternoons we visited either an orphanage or atent city (a large area of land, made up of tents madeout of a variety of materials, mainly whatever they canfind, thousands of people are still living here18months after the earthquake.) It was a realrevelation to see how the people live here, they areextremely resilient. The conditions people live in areunreal, especially in 30-40 degree heat. The childrenwere so happy to see us and longed to be loved andcared for. Their faces lit up when we entered the tentcities or the orphanages and were sad to see us go.When visiting the tent cities we not only played withthe children, but we also helped to repair tents. With
so many tents needing repaired (especially after thestorms and rain) we had a plan of which tents were tobe fixed each day. The people were so grateful andwere happy for us to pray with them and their family. At the orphanages the children had very little, ifanything at all. We gave each child a colouring bookand pencils, as well sweets (they hid a lot of this intheir rooms, not knowing when they would get itagain,) but mainly investing time with them andshowing them love and care.
One orphanage in particular grabbed our attention, itwas the last orphanage we visited. None of the teamhad ever visited this orphanage before, however thetwo pastors at Foursquare had recently met the manwho runs this orphanage and decided to take us tosee what it was like. It is ran by a pastor and his wife, they started it up when a couple in their congregationpassed away, leaving three children behind. Thepastor and his wife took these children in as their ownand ever since people have been dropping childrenoff to them. There are now 16 girls living with them ina very small house, consisting of two box rooms withclay floors, no beds and very little clothing. Thechildren are fed one meal a day if funds provide and

none of them have uniform for the beginning schoolyear. The area in which the orphanage is situated is inone of the worst places in Port-au-prince, with highcrime and gang rates. Directly outside the orphanageis a sewage stream, which radiates an unbearablesmell. The thought of having to live beside this andeat with this smell is unthinkable for me.
With our flights and accommodation paid for and allthe other extras, we had $1800 left over. After visitingthis orphanage and spending time playing with thechildren, seeing how happy they were even with solittle, it was evident to us that this is why we werebrought to Haiti. We had been sent to carry thismoney over to provide the pastor and these childrenwith a gift to help improve their lifestyle. We left thismoney in the care of the Pastors at foursquare andhave since decided to purchase a house near by forthe pastor and the children to live in. Elim andFoursquare will work together to reconstruct thishouse to make it a home for these children.
The hardest part of my time in Haiti was having to
leave. I felt a real attachment to the country and the
people there. I have a strong desire to return and I
hope this will be in the near future. The people are so
strong, friendly and resilient, which so much to live for;
even after all they have been through. It is my desire
to raise more money to go back, as well as to take
more out to develop this orphanage further and to
support the pastor and these girls. I cannot put into
words how different it is in Haiti, however what I can
say is where there is life, there is hope and it is
therefore our duty to help these people and support
them in whatever way we can. A part of me definitely
remains in Haiti!

fundraising for this project please get in touch by

DIET should be a 4 letter word
There is a reason diet is a four letter word!
Dieting has become a way of life for a lot of people.
There is actually now a diet industry with all the weird
and wonderful products, potions and fancy gadgets
to satisfy everyone! Through targeted marketing we
now live in a world where quick fix solutions to
weight loss are slowly overtaking the concept of
general health and well-being.
Here lies the problem for me. I personally lost five
stone and I went through a number of different
approaches but nothing that I would class as
unhealthy. I experimented with different eating styles
so I could find what was comfortable but it was safe
and controlled. In my work as a personal trainer, what
I have found is that a quick fix will never go away but
the more important thing to tackle prior to trying to
lose weight is how we feel and think.
This is the first reason why most diets dont work and
95% of people who lose weight end up putting it back
on again. If you sit back and think of the word diet
what does that conjure up in your mind? For most
people its lack, restriction and struggle. Weight loss
is a challenge but should never be unbearable in my
opinion. It is almost seen as compulsory conversation
round the water cooler about the latest diet and
what can and cant be eaten. This is no way to live in
my opinion. We have to have some level of freedom
and choice if we are to succeed in long term health.
The second reason diets dont work is the end date
concept. There is nothing wrong with setting a short
term goal like a holiday or a wedding for example but
if you are to avoid frustration and disappointment in
the long term, dont attach an end date to your healthy
eating habits. This can lead to yo yo dieting and
wasted time and energy on products and exercise
schemes. I believe habits last a lifetime and work so
much better than short term diets, no matter the
result.
The third reason that diets dont work is the lack of/too
much freedom that some diets encourage. In my
experience you need to be able to have some freedom
but not too much. Any diet that says you cant ever
have a treat will encourage feelings of guilt if you ever
do, which is likely to derail you! The other side to the
coin are diets that allow you to factor in treats every
day. This is cool if you have the discipline but not
many people can eat ONE biscuit or just ONE square
of chocolate.
In conclusion, weight loss is not easy but can be made
simple by finding something that works for you and
isnt a constant struggle. Proper eating plans that
include all essential nutrients are so much better than
faddy products or diets. I will leave you with this
quote your body is for life, not just for a diet

Banish thehangover
Before you choose to finish that coldturkey or opt for the Bloody Mary, try thesetips instead:
RehydrateAlcohol is a diuretic a chemical that kicksyour urinary system into overdrive, andunless you managed to alternate youralcoholic beverages with water in between(which never works does it?), your post-drinking symptoms are most likely due todehydration. Rehydrating is key when itcomes to recovering from a hangover andcannot be stressed enough. But Im nottalking coffee, Red Bull or hair-of-the-doghere. Caffeine is an acknowledgedstimulant, and while you might hopecaffeine can perform its miracles of giving
some much needed focus and alertness, its another diuretic. Red Bull isnt muchbetter (and requires another column), andchoosing the hair-of-the-dog option wouldonly be advisable if you want to pass outto forget what youve done the nightbefore. Coffee will not help your stomacheither, so the best option is water at roomtemperature. You may add some freshlemon or fresh orange juice to give youadditional Vitamin C for energy, and forsoothing your upset tummy.
Top UpWhen you drink excessively, you lose a lotof key minerals and vitamins includingpotassium, magnesium and B-Vitamins, allof which need to be topped up. Bananas
Did you wake up with a throbbingheadache, a general feeling ofphysical misery, a tiger in yourbathroom and a bit of left over turkeystuck somewhere on your shirt?

are a great hangover food; they are likenatures own little hangover cures. Not onlyare they full of fructose (natural fruit sugar)to help with energy, they contain a niceamount of potassium. Bananas are alsonatural antacids which will help yournausea and stomach pain and they alsocontain magnesium, which helps to relaxpounding blood vessels in your head.Have a banana on toasted wholegrainbread (for the carbohydrates and B-Vitamins) with organic peanut or almondbutter (great sources of magnesium andprotein), and you get a good dose of allthose key minerals and vitamins you lostthe night before. Drinking vegetablebouillon soup or coconut water are twoother good sources of vitamins andminerals, and easy for a fragile stomach todigest.
EatDo eat. Yes, it might be the last thing youwant to do, but you will feel a lot better theminute you get your blood sugar levels upafter having had some food. There is noone-and-only hangover food cure, but youcant beat a good fry-up. It gives you thegreasy fat to coat your stomach, and the
bread and eggs will give you thecarbohydrates and protein for energy andblood sugar support. All I can say there isno perfect food cure for a hangover, so ifyouve found one that works for you, stickto it. My advice, though, would be to optfor a well-balanced meal, including allgroups of macronutrients: complexcarbohydrate, lean protein and healthyunsaturated fats. A toasted wholegrainbagel with cream cheese and salmon isanother good option, and so is porridgewith natural yoghurt and strawberries, giving you enough fibre for blood sugarbalance, selenium to boost liver function, and Vitamin C for energy and soothingyour tummy.
SleepBut for the best cure of all (and if you havethe luxury of not having to get up), go backto bed after your breakfast and sleep it off!
