As a great starter in the game of life; lots of gusto and

"UMPH", rarely did you see me cross the finish line.

Realizing I wasn't the best or in the top tier, I was certain to

leave before the posting of the official rankings. Often, I got

bored, distracted by whatever glittered or winked at me. Then

there were the insults hurled by those obviously not aware of

my stature (the great I am) that prompted my crisp retort in

not so many pretty words. Restraint of pen and tongue were

not virtues I possessed. Whatever the reason, look for me

strolling off with the rowdy crowd on the way to a party.

Why? Finishing requires perseverance; the steady and

continued action and resolve despite difficulties or setbacks.

I suffered from the adult baby syndrome, lacking determina-

tion and maturity. I was not willing to be one among many;

no matter my position in the pack. Fortunately, all that

changed in the rooms of Alcoholics Anonymous.

"Living" Steps One, Two & Three, I "gave up". Steps Four

and Five required me to "own up". At Six and Seven I

"cleaned up", and in Steps Eight and Nine, I "made up".

Step Ten required me to "grow up". It contains the words

"continued" and "promptly" that cut to the chase.

In early sobriety, my mind had as difficult a time understand-

ing the necessity of "promptly admitting" as my mouth had

forming the words "I am wrong, I am sorry, please forgive

me", required in Step Nine. Told continue, promptly to cor-

rect my wrongs, these Steps seemed increasingly more precari-

ous to climb. Like other A.A.s, early on in the program, my

disease kept me ignorant and, at that time, ignorance was bliss

No wonder people declared they would have run to the nearest

exit if they knew what it took to live a sober life. Yet, If I

wanted to live comfortably inside my skin, there was no

running or hiding.

Deep down, my secret belief was, unlike you who needed to be

in the process day in and day out, I would ARRIVE. Yours

truly would provide an example of quality sobriety; serving as

mentor, teacher, and all around A.A. Poster Girl. That

delusion was crushed by my "continued" need to pick myself

up, dust myself off, take both feet out of my mouth. How would

I be able to trudge the road to happy destiny?

CAUTION, you are entering a no whining zone.

Life happened on God's terms. To name a few:

Getting cut off on I-95, rude customer service representatives,

people who run stop signs, or don't use turn signals.

Not getting the big promotion, even though I was the best

Losing everything, including my home

Silly, useless "gadget/ trinket/stuff" cluttering my space; re-

minders of money squandered.

Through it all, I came to realize God graciously reserves the

right to have people and situations disagree with me whether I

am living sober or not. Sobriety is not an end unto itself or a

guarantee for a pain free existence. It is what gets me into the

game; living sober the way He intended. It has to be done on a

daily basis, consistently. Unfortunately, a booster shot of yes-

terday's recovery will not keep me going today.

Often, I lie awake at night, wondering how God puts

up with me. I know I push Him to the limits, or so it seems.

Starting each day with good intentions then failing in a thou-

sand ways, He still forgives me of the same mistakes. He

guides me through my A.A.R.P. adolescence. Not one to do

"life" gracefully, I've been compared to the proverbial bull in

a china shop. Gratefully the Tenth Step helps me ascend the

rocky terrain without causing too many landslides.

I love the fable about the man who prayed daily, asking God

for His will. God answered, "Push the rock". So each day the

man pushed the large rock by his hut. Day in and day out he

pushed, and pushed, and pushed the rock...and when he died

and went to meet his Maker, he hung his head low. "Why are

you so down trodden?", God asked. His answer could barely

be heard, "I have failed You, despite my endless efforts, I never

moved the rock". "My son!", God exclaimed, "I never asked

you to move the rock, I asked you to push the rock."

God did not call me into existence JUST on the day I was born

or on the day I was graced with the gift of sobriety. He calls me

into life each day I wake up sober. When I pray for His will

that day, He asks "Will you push the rock for Me today?"

You see, I am not called to win or be successful. I am called to

be faithful; suit up, show up, not pick up, and keep on

keeping on.

Grateful for the unfailing love and mercy, sober only by His

grace, I approach true tolerance and begin to comprehend

unconditional love.

"...since all people including ourselves are emotionally ill

and frequently wrong...it is pointless to get angry at people,

like ourselves, suffering from the pains of growing up."

INTERGROUP FINANCIAL REPORT

THERE'S A HOLE IN MY SIDEWALK…

A Poem by Portia Nelson: Autobiography in Five Chapters

1) I walk down the street. ....There is a deep hole in the sidewalk .... I fall in. .... I am lost — I am hopeless. .... It isn't my fault. .... It takes forever to find a way out. 2) I walk down the same street. ....There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. .... I pretend I don't see it. .... I fall in again. .... I can't believe I'm in the same place. .... But it isn't my fault. .... It still takes a long time to get out. 3) I walk down the same street. ....There is a deep hole in the sidewalk .... I see it is there. .... I still fall in — it's a habit .... My eyes are open .... I know where I am .... It is MY fault. .... I get out immediately. 4) I walk down the same street. ....There is a deep hole in the sidewalk .... I walk around it. 5) I walk down a DIFFERENT street.

―Alcoholics Anonymous has no opinion on outside issues;

hence the A.A. name ought never be drawn into

public controversy."

Editorial by Bill W.

A.A. Grapevine, September 1948

No A.A. Group or member should ever, in such a way as to implicate

A.A., express any opinion on outside controversial issues -- particularly

those of politics, alcohol reform, or sectarian religion. The Alcoholics

Anonymous Groups oppose no one. Concerning such matters they can

express no views whatever.

To most of us, Alcoholics Anonymous has become as solid as the Rock

of Gibraltar. We like to believe that it will soon be as well known and

just as enduring as that historic landmark. We enjoy this pleasant con-

viction because nothing has yet occurred to disturb it; we reason that we

must hang together or die. Hence we take for granted our continued

unity as a movement.

But should we? Though God has bestowed upon us great favors, and

though we are bound by stronger ties of love and necessity than most

societies, is it prudent to suppose that automatically these great gifts and

attributes shall be ours forever. If we are worthy, we shall probably

continue to enjoy them. So the real question is, how shall we always be

worthy of our present blessings?

Seen from this point of view, our A.A. Traditions are those attitudes and

practices by which we may deserve, as a movement, a long life and a

useful one. To this end, none could be more vital than our

10th Tradition, for it deals with the subject of controversy -- serious

controversy.

On the other side of the world, millions have not long since died in

religious dissension. Other millions have died in political controversy.

The end is not yet. Nearly everybody in the world has turned reformer.

Each group, society and nation is saying to the other, "You must do as

we say, or else". Political controversy and reform by compulsion has

reached an all-time high. And eternal, seemingly, are the flames of reli-

gious dissension.

Being like other men and women, how can we expect to remain forever

immune from these perils? Probably we shall not. At length, we must

meet them all. We cannot flee from them, nor ought we try. If these

challenges do come, we shall, I am sure, go out to meet them gladly and

unafraid. That will be the acid test of our worth.

Our best defense? This surely lies in the formation of a Tradition

respecting serious controversy so powerful that neither the weakness

of persons nor the strain and strife of our troubled times can harm Al-

coholics Anonymous. We know that A.A. must continue to live, or else

many of us and many of our brother alcoholics throughout the world

will surely resume the hopeless journey to oblivion. That must never

be.

As though by some deep and compelling instinct we have thus far

avoided serious controversies. Save minor and healthy growing pains,

we are at peace among ourselves. And because we have thus far

adhered to our sole aim, the whole world regards us favorably.

May God grant us the wisdom and fortitude ever to sustain an

unbreakable unity.

OUR FOUNDER ON TRADITION 10

1. We enter into the world of the spirit.

2. And we have ceased fighting anything or anyone-

even alcohol.

3. For by this time sanity will have returned.

4. We will seldom be interested in liquor.

5. If tempted, we recoil from it as from a hot flame.

6. We react sanely and normally, and we will find that

this has happened automatically.

7. We will see that our new attitude toward liquor has

been given us without any thought or effort on our

part.

8. It just comes! That is the miracle of it.

9. We are not fighting it, neither are we avoiding

temptation.

10. We feel as though we had been placed in a position

of neutrality—safe and protected.

11. We have not even sworn off. Instead, the problem

has been removed. It does not exist for us.

12. We are neither cocky nor are we afraid.

13. That is how we react so long as we keep in fit

spiritual condition.

TENTH STEP PROMISES Push The Rock (continued from page 1)

When life asks too much of me::

Step-children preferring I am not part of any equation

involving them

I push the rock.

Friends come and go, in and out of the program

I push the rock.

Loved ones live long-suffering with diseases, or die in

the blink of an eye

I push the rock.

Despite my defects which pop up like uninvited guests,

I cannot fall or rise farther than God's grace can reach.

In fact there is no dark of night that can keep any of us

from His love and forgiveness. His grace can always

reach. All He asks is that we push the rock.
