Dear Member,

As ever, time is racing away, and the County Show season is already upon us

with only six weeks until our National Show. An update of arrangements and

sponsors is inside, and it is delightful to see more stalls being booked than at

last year‟s Show at the Royal Cornwall. Thank you to everyone who is

supporting it – what a great measure of enthusiasm for the breed!

Earlier this week a number of members interested in polling joined together

by kind invitation of John, Jean and Robert Hadley at Chesterton Fields Farm,

to enjoy a very interesting afternoon looking at the Knightcote herd of polled

South Devon cattle, as well as some lavish refreshments and much enjoyed

Banbury buns! Very grateful thanks are extended to the Hadley family for

opening their doors and going to considerable efforts to welcome us. We wish

them success with their new polling project, and look forward with interest to

seeing the results.

A report of the Midland Club Sale is also inside, where a new record for the

Club was set by a very strong Welland Valley bull. The bull line-up was

impressive, with a good choice for buyers. The females were also a strong

breed representation, but they sold less well than in some previous years

which was disappointing and not a true reflection of the quality of animals.

We can all speculate as to the reasons, but it is becoming increasingly clear

that animals with performance figures and health status are more and more

sought after. If you would like to take advantage of the current financial

incentives offered by the Society for recording and for herd health schemes,

please ring us.

Council have decided to bring in some new measures to encourage higher

health status – details inside. These measures are not intended to be

restrictive, rather to give assurances to buyers as the prices of South Devon

pedigree cattle continue to rise.

Just a few more opportunities remain for you to buy a bull or some females

before the Summer (assuming we have a summer this year) at public auction

(more information inside), and I wish all vendors success in the sale ring.

There are a number of things of interest to our younger members to which I

would draw your attention – the Next Generation weekend in September

which promises to be both interesting and fun; the David Phillips Memorial

Competition and the Young Handler Competition, both aimed at encouraging

activity in the show ring. Please support where you can.

I look forward to seeing many of you during the coming weeks at shows and

other events. Please come and have a chat, and collect your Journal!

With best wishes, Caroline

DEVON COUNTY SHOW

Because of Health & Safety requirements, there will be restricted access to

the cattle building whilst any judging is taking place. This means that you will

be unable to enter the area between the building and the judging ring during

those times, unless you are wearing an authorised wristband.

Page 3: South Devons Newsletter May 2011

3

We have been given a supply of wristbands for our members and, if you would

like to receive one, please let us know as soon as you read this to allow time

for posting.

The Devon Regional Committee is hosting a Cheese & Wine gathering on

Thursday afternoon at 3pm at the Society stand in the cattle lines. All are

welcome to join us then, or at other times during the show.

NATIONAL SHOW UPDATE Royal Norfolk Show, 29th & 30th June

At the date of closing, there were 123 South Devon stalls booked by a total

of 36 breeders – a tremendous effort!

If you are not showing, please do come and support the exhibitors, and enjoy

a marvellous spectacle of immaculate cattle! Judging will start first thing on

Wednesday morning, with Hugh Lello MBE taking charge in the show ring.

The Society marquee is alongside the ring, and there will be refreshments

available for members and guests. If you would like a break from the judging,

or from the Show, for a time, and could give a hand in the marquee please let

Liz know.

On Wednesday afternoon the Colman Mustard Beef Interbreed competition

takes place, which invites entries from breeds to include mixed teams of

pedigree and commercial cattle – something a little different!

The Society will then host a Pimms Party for members and guests in the

marquee, beginning at 4.30 pm, before the Stockmans Dinner in the evening.

The main event on Thursday is the Towergate Lloyd & Whyte Young Handler

Competition – details of which appear elsewhere in the newsletter. Please

encourage sons/daughters/relatives/employees aged 16-25 to come forward

and enter – there are great prizes to be won, as well as the prestige that

comes with it. The Competition will take place after the interbreed beef

classes, towards lunchtime. Awards will then be made in the marquee,

including the Track Marshall Trophy to the exhibitor gaining the most points

in the breed classes.

MIDLAND CLUB SALE

Stratford, 7th May

One of the strongest line-ups of pedigree bulls and heifers in recent years at

the South Devon Midland Club‟s 24th annual sale at Stratford brought

interest from across the country, with a good trade for well-structured

cattle near to profit. A new record of 8,500 guineas was achieved for the

Club Sale – an increase of 2,300 guineas, with a new average for bulls of

£3,668 – an increase of £439!

Judge Roger Clemens, Breed Society President from Wadebridge, Cornwall,

picked Lumbylaw Galahad 15 from A R Lee, Alnwick, Northumberland, as his

Champion. The bull is out of a home-bred cow by Sexton Excalibur 16.

Knowlhill Excalibur 2 from A E J & F J Claridge, Middle Clayden,

Page 5: South Devons Newsletter May 2011

5

Buckinghamshire, was Reserve Champion and with similar bloodlines on the sire

side, going back to Godworthy Excalibur.

In the sale ring there was good demand for bulls, and fierce competition for

M E & T E Broome‟s Welland Valley Jerome (T), a bull by Erme Jerome out of

Welland Valley Dorothy 2, who sold to Mr W H D Scott, from Moreton-in-

Marsh, Gloucestershire for 8,500 guineas. Next highest price was for M & M

Rushbrooke‟s polled bull Z Brettles SAS Intrepid (T) who sold for 5,200

guineas to Mr & Mrs J A Hopkins from Somerset; followed by A R Lee‟s

Lumbylaw Leo 71 from a very successful breeding line, who sold to W L

Pickford & Son, Malmesbury, Wiltshire, for 5,000 guineas.

In the heifer judging, Mr W H D Scott‟s AI Grove Dandelion 28 took top

place in the 2009 born section, a classy heifer by Trewint Henry 1. A E J & F

J Claridge‟s Knowlhill Rose 10, by the same sire as the Reserve Breed

Champion, Sexton Excalibur 7, was placed second. She went on to sell at the

top price of 2,450 guineas in her section to Mrs J Archer, North Tuddenham,

Norfolk.

In the 2010 born heifer section, A & P Rickett‟s Juniper Kingcup 1 was placed

first, a striking yearling heifer by Juniper Ivanhoe. She sold at 1,120 guineas,

top price in her section, to D Holt, Harpenden, Hertfordshire.

A strong trade in a consignment of cows with calves at foot from Mr & Mrs

Pratt, Stourport-on-Severn, saw a top price of 2,550 guineas to Roger and

Tom Elliott, from Kislingbury, Northamptonshire.

Averages: 15 bulls £3,668; halter-broken bulling heifers £1,458; halter-broken maiden heifers £1,006; cows with calves at foot £2,121

Show, only seven miles from the showground, and a short walk from the beach.

DNA TESTING & BULL REGISTRATIONS

Please note that, with immediate effect, we can no longer receive hair samples

for DNA testing unless DNA cards are used. Please let us know as and when

you need a card.

It is also very important that vendors of bulls at Society Sales apply for

pedigree registration well in advance of the closing date for Sale entries to

allow sufficient time for the DNA test to be completed, and for the result to

be published in the sale catalogue.

Increasingly, buyers are taking myostatin status into account in their pre-

selection, and if the DNA result is not available in time, you might miss out!

PROMISING YOUNG BULL SCHEME

The Promising Young Bull Scheme, run by EBLEX, is an opportunity for breed

societies to increase the range of AI genetics available to their members and

has proved very beneficial in the past.

The selection criteria set by EBLEX, however, is understandably quite tight

and it is not always possible to have a wide choice of potential bulls to

nominate.

Any nominated bull must be performance recorded, and fall within the top

10% of a number of EBVs to qualify, and must also be scanned.

It is disappointing to miss the chance to collect semen from promising young

bulls under this scheme just because there are no scanning figures available,

so please take this into consideration if you are performance recording.

Page 15: South Devons Newsletter May 2011

15

The Society offers a refund against the cost of one scanning visit each year

(£60 per herd), and you should contact the office for the details of scanners

licensed to measure for Breedplan.

EAST OF ENGLAND SMITHFIELD FESTIVAL

The East of England Agricultural Society and the Royal Smithfield Club have

joined together to create a new winter primestock show in 2011 and in future

years.

It will be held this year on 2nd/3rd December at the Peterborough

Showground, and will be housed in the showground‟s purpose-built exhibition

centre.

The usual Smithfield primestock classes will be held at the show, followed by

the traditional auction sale of exhibits.

The South Devon breed gave strong support to the Smithfield event last year,

together with prize money from the Society, and we look forward to another

good opportunity to promote the breed for its primestock characteristics.

If any member has in their herd, or knows of, potential primestock cattle

which might be shown to promote the breed at Smithfield or any other

primestock event please would they let Caroline, or Richard Ford (chairman of

Breed Promotion) know.

CONDOLENCES

We are sorry to inform members of the death of Alan Cook, who was

herdsman of the Tregotha herd at Trevaskis for 30 years during the 1970s,

80s and 90s.

During that time Alan showed cattle from the herd at many major shows and

Society Sales; he had great love and passion for South Devon cattle and was

well known and respected by breeders.

Our sympathy is extended to the Cook and Eustice families.

HEALTH ISSUES

If you are a newly joined member of a CHeCS scheme and would like to claim a

£5 credit against pedigree registrations over a 2-year period please contact

Debbie. You will need to show that you are screening for Johnes Disease in

the first instance.

When Council met in April they discussed herd health issues, in recognition of

the increasing need for beef herds to promote a clean health status,

particularly in the light of market-driven requirements.

Some new measures will come into force soon at Society Sales to reassure

buyers acquiring valuable pedigree stock that the cattle are protected and

unlikely to be transmitting disease; and to generally encourage moves towards

clean herds and the eradication (where practically possible) of a number of

diseases.

The Herd Health Declaration will become a compulsory requirement for

vendors to complete at Society Sales, beginning this Autumn at the Bristol

Sale.

For BVD, as of the Spring Sale 2012, all Sale animals will be required to be

either tested clear or from a CHeCS accredited herd; and double vaccinated

for the disease. The date of test and vaccinations will be required to be

declared on the Herd Health Declaration.

Johnes Disease remains a serious issue, not least because of the difficulties

in testing for it whilst also regularly testing for TB. Council did not feel ready

yet to „legislate‟ on this disease because of sensitivity towards TB-affected

herds, but recognised that it is in the breed‟s long-term interests to

encourage clean herd status where possible, particularly as buyers are

becoming increasingly discriminatory.

The best defence for Show cattle is to test them clear then double vaccinate

for BVD and Lepto, even when from herds accredited clear of those diseases.

You might also consider marker-vaccinating for IBR, but only if you are not

Page 18: South Devons Newsletter May 2011

18

considering collecting semen from those show bulls as it would exclude them

from export orders.

For general advice, and if you are considering joining a CHeCS licensed

scheme, your own veterinary practice should be your first port of call.

POLLED BLOODLINES

Following discussions at the recent Poll Group Open Day at the Hadleys, and

by the Breed Improvement Committee, I would like to draw your attention to

any polled cattle in your herds whose polled status might not yet have been

notified to us.

Current polled bloodlines are quite limited, and any „wild types‟ that might

suddenly appear could be of significant interest for anyone wishing to take

polling forward within the breed. Now that Merial are able to help with DNA

testing animals for the possibility of homozygous poll type, we can much more

easily trace the source of polling and assess its potential.

Please would you let us know if you have any polled animals which do not have a

Z in their prefix, so that we may correct the pedigree certificate and so

update our records. Thank you.

CATTLE FOR SALE LIST

The Cattle for Sale List, as indicated in the last newsletter, has now been

refreshed and only those cattle remain that we have been specifically advised

about at the beginning of May.

DAVID PHILLIPS MEMORIAL COMPETITION

Summer Shows with individual South Devon classes qualify for the David

Phillips Memorial Competition, which is launched for the 2011 season. A

minimum of two shows must be entered by each entrant. There will be no

maximum to the number of shows entered, and the two highest-scoring shows

will count towards final points.

Members, and relatives or employees of members, aged between 16 and 25 on

the dates of the first and last shows, will be eligible to enter the Competition.

Cattle shown need not be the property of the Exhibitor, but must be prepared

for the Show by the Exhibitor.

Entrants and exhibitors are invited to apply for Young Exhibitor cards from

the SDHBS office in good time before shows are held, which must be handed

to the South Devon judge of the classes before judging begins. The entrant

should identify in which class he/she should be judged.

The judge will mark the Exhibitor with points out of ten, in each of three

sections: Exhibitor‟s personal presentation; presentation of animal;

Page 22: South Devons Newsletter May 2011

22

competence in handling of animal. The judge will be encouraged to ask

pertinent questions of the entrants.

The judge will be responsible for returning the completed cards to the

SDHBS office as soon as possible after the show, and in any case by 31st

December.

The Young Exhibitor‟s two highest-scoring shows will count towards the

winning prize of £200, to be presented at the AGM following the year in which

the cattle were shown, together with a Trophy. In the event of a tie, the

prize money will be divided equally between the winners.

The Competition may be held for as many years as the David Phillips Memorial

Fund allows. It may not be won by any one individual more than once.

AND FINALLY ..... (this one comes from Australia)

In the hospital the relatives gathered in the waiting room, where their family

member lay gravely ill. Finally the doctor came in, looking tired and sombre.

“I‟m afraid I‟m the bearer of bad news”, he said, as he surveyed the worried

faces. “The only hope left for your loved one at this time is a brain transplant.

It‟s an experimental procedure, very risky, but it is the only hope. Insurance

will cover the procedure, but you will have to pay for the brain yourselves.”

The family members sat silently as they absorbed the news. After a great

length of time, someone asked, “Well, how much does a brain cost?”

The doctor quickly replied, “£5,000 for a male brain, and £200 for a female

brain ...” The moment turned awkward. Men in the room tried not to smile,

avoiding eye contact with the women, but some actually smirked.

A man unable to contain his curiosity blurted out the question everyone

wanted to ask: “Why is the male brain so much more?”

Page 23: South Devons Newsletter May 2011

23

The doctor smiled at the childish innocence and explained to the entire group,

“It‟s just standard pricing procedure. We have to mark down the price of the

female brains because they‟ve actually been used.”
