Dear Member,

The Bristol Sale was a great success and seemed to buck the trend of some

other breeds’ sales this autumn, which is most encouraging. Thank you to all

those who helped – particularly Kivells, and our team of frame scorers and

stewards.

A catalogue for the Skipton sale on Wednesday 7th November is enclosed for

members in regions 5, 6 and 7. It is also available on the website, and

additional paper copies may be requested from the office. Included in the

sale are two bulls, eight in-calf heifers, two maidens, and two crossbreds. All

will be inspected by our Sale Inspector, Duncan Findlay. The cattle in the

show classes will be judged from 10 am, and the sale will begin at

approximately 12.30 pm, following the sale of Beef Shorthorns.

The Herd Competition Winner’s Open Day took place earlier this week in

Northumberland, and a report is inside, together with the competition results.

Congratulations to all herds who entered this, and the regional and Club

competitions, and I hope it was a valuable experience.

A number of other Farm Walks are taking place in the next few weeks, the

first of which is being hosted by Alan & Elizabeth Bartley to see their

Mutterton herd on Wednesday 24th October. This is primarily a Devon

regional event, but other members are invited – just let us know as soon as

possible. Please see inside for details of other visits.

The calendar continues to look very busy, with technical events, store sales,

and the start of the primestock shows. I hope to see many of you ‘out and

about’ in the coming weeks.

With my best wishes

Caroline

AUTUMN SHOW & SALE RESULTS

Judge: Mr Ian Rounsevell, Highgate, St Veep, Lostwithiel

Auctioneers: Messrs Kivells

A smaller than usual catalogue this year perhaps gave cause for some pre-Sale

nerves – but the quality of the cattle and the continuing demand for the breed

resulted in one of the most successful female sales we have seen, with the

breed record price for a female being broken again at a Society sale to reach

a new high of 6,800 guineas!

Average prices were also well up, which is encouraging for all, especially taking

into account the higher standards set at recent sales. The dispersal of the

Monkton herd also saw strong prices, and we wish Gareth Davies well for the

future.

The pre-Sale supper, hosted by the Wessex Region, was enjoyed by a good

crowd of vendors, and the raffle raised in excess of £100 for regional funds.

Roger Clemens entertained the gathering with some carefully selected stories

and jokes, all of which passed their inspection, some only just! Our thanks go

to Regional Chairman Charles Phillips, for providing wine to accompany the

supper.

HERD COMPETITION WINNERS OPEN DAY By kind invitation of Robert & Sally Lee

Lumbylaw Farm, Edlingham, Alnwick, Northumberland

The weather was not conducive to a farm walk, to say the least! Heavy

downpours during the night, followed by horizontal rain all morning would deter

anyone not entirely dedicated to enjoying the sight of award winning cattle.

However, some 50 stalwarts were welcomed by Robert & Sally Lee to Lumbylaw

to look at the cattle and to hear how the herd has developed since it moved to

Northumberland 22 years ago.

Page 10: South Devons Newsletter October 2012

10

One of the herd’s main attributes that persuaded the judges was its evenness

and uniformity, especially taking into consideration the use of a number of

different bulls.

We were shown groups of finishing steers, alongside young bulls that had yet

to be put through the final paces of breeding selection. In another shed, in-

calf rising 3-year olds looked like peas in a pod – well-grown, structured, and

with shape. Cows with their bull calves had been brought under cover to

enable a closer look, and again, their uniformity was quite striking.

The Lees’ vet spoke about pelvic measuring, a technique that has developed

significantly in recent years with the use of specially designed calipers

imported from America that can be employed relatively easily and quickly by a

vet whilst heifers are being handled in a crush. The science and the

mathematics seem to be quite simple, and have the potential to give a good

indication about calving ability before any potential disasters may occur. This

technique will likely be discussed at the next meeting of the Breed

Improvement committee in November.

The rain eventually stopped towards the end of the afternoon, to enable

trailers to take us to the other side of the valley to look at the cows with

their heifer calves at foot – another strong, well-shaped group.

Before we dispersed again to the four corners of the country, thanks were

conveyed to the Lees, to the judges, and to the caterers, for a most enjoyable

afternoon!

within and without the region are welcome to attend, but please let us know

for catering purposes. At the end of the afternoon the region’s annual

meeting will be held.

COMMERCIAL SALES

Buyers and sellers of South Devon store cattle are encouraged to support two

forthcoming sales intended to draw together groups of animals.

Thrapston, near Kettering, Northamptonshire, on Saturday 27th October,

supported by Woodhead Bros and Morrisons. Region 5 have arranged to

have a breed promotional display, including last year’s record price bull X

AI Mutterton Ashton Bitter, kindly loaned by A & C Vrona. For more

information contact market auctioneers, Bletsoes, 01832 732241, and

speak to James Sealy. We are told that cattle can be taken up until 10

am on the day of the sale, but if they are booked in beforehand they will

be advertised. Alternatively, please call Kevin Finch, regional chairman,

on 07850 852678.

Colchester, on Tuesday 4th December. For more information contact

market auctioneers, Stanfords, 01206 842156.

CORNWALL PEDIGREE BEEF CALF SHOW

A reminder that the second Cornwall Pedigree Beef Calf Show will be taking

place at the Royal Cornwall Showground on Sunday 28th October. Last year’s

Show was very successful with over 100 pedigree calves being entered.

Please look at their website – www.cornwallpedigreecalfshow.co.uk - for

further information or contact Emma Pascoe for more details at

[email protected].

SMITHFIELD & ENGLISH WINTER FAIR

Once again the Society is financially supporting exhibitors of South Devon

prime stock cattle at the East of England Smithfield Festival at Peterborough

on 30th November/1st December; and at the English Winter Fair at Stafford on

17th/18th November.

The purebred South Devon primestock section of the East of England

Smithfield Festival has drawn together a good entry of heifers, but

disappointingly only a small number of steers. However, the newly established

Calf Show has so far attracted over 30 South Devons, so overall the breed will

be putting on an excellent display of commercial and breeding cattle. Entries

are still open, so for more information please contact the East of England

Smithfield Festival, East of England Agricultural Society, East of England

Showground, Peterborough, PE2 6XE, 01733 234451,

[email protected].

ANNUAL CALF SHOW, THIRSK

The Northern Region will be encouraging entries for the second year at

Thirsk’s Calf Show on 12th November. There will be classes once again for

purebred cattle, with sections for haltered and non-haltered. Plans are also

on-going to include a commercial cattle sale.

Page 16: South Devons Newsletter October 2012

16

This is a good opportunity for anyone wishing to start a ‘showing’ career, to

promote their herd and the breed.

For more information, contact Regional Chairman Paul Harrison 07971 699717,

or Regional Secretary Alex Welch 07720 445047.

BEEF SOUTH WEST Westpoint, Clyst St Mary, Exeter, EX5 1DJ

Thursday 8th November

Another good promotional opportunity for the breed takes place within Beef

South West – two bulls entered in the Young Bull Competition; commercial

entries; and of course three pens of demonstration cattle on the Society

stand. The Event promises to be a great agricultural focus, with plenty of

scope to do business. More information can be found on the Beef South West

website, www.beefsouthwest.co.uk, and in the press as the Event approaches.

Just a reminder: entries are invited for South West Young Beef Farmer of

the Year with prize money totalling £500, sponsored by The Vale Veterinary

Group. Entrants must be under 30 years of age on 8th November 2012, and

reside in the counties of Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Dorset, Gloucestershire,

or Wiltshire.

Entrants must give a resume of their beef farming activities highlighting

their aims, actions and achievements for the last twelve months. A shortlist

of six potential winners will be visited and assessed by the judges, and the

winner announced at the Event.

The pre-Event Supper is sponsored by the Society, and South Devon beef will

be served. Tickets can be booked from Rosemary Risdon, 01409 271510.

Sponsorship:

It is crucial that we raise as much sponsorship as possible in order to have a

successful Show. The Working Group has compiled a lengthy list of potential

sponsors and, if you have any close trading contacts that you could approach

for help, please would you let us know and we can provide background

information.

Venue for the National Show 2014:

Subject to successful negotiation, Council have decided to take the National

Show to the Great Yorkshire in 2014. For many years, the northern region has

been recognised as a primary focus for breed promotion and expansion, and

this presents an ideal opportunity to ‘show-case’ the breed to a wide audience.

LAST CALL FOR CALENDAR PHOTOGRAPHS

Thank you to those who have sent in photographs so far – but we need more!

HERD BOOK

Production of the latest edition of the Herd Book is virtually complete, and

ready to go the printers.

Because it covers three years of registrations, there is too much information

to fit into one book – so this volume will actually be produced in two books.

If you have not yet ordered your copy, please would you do so now as only a

limited number will be printed. Thank you!

BREEDPLAN ON YOUR PHONE!

For those of you with ‘Smart’ phones, you may be interested to learn that an

‘App’ is now available to access Internet Solutions (Breedplan database).

This can be found by going to our website and accessing the database. Details

are shown on the Breedplan log-in page. It is quite handy to use, especially if

you’re in the middle of a field and wish to look up details of a particular animal

for example. Moreover, it is not expensive!

HEALTH ISSUES

Society Sale vendors in particular should be alerted by their vet that, when

planning for BVD protection, females should be vaccinated prior to getting in

calf. If already pregnant when vaccinated there is a risk that the calf might

become a PI.

Testing for BVD antigen to determine whether or not an animal is a PI can be

done at any stage of the animal’s life. This result applies for the lifetime of

the animal – ie, if it is a PI it will always be a PI, and if it is not a PI it will

never become one.

Earlier this year Council ruled on future changes for health status of animals

coming to Society Sales, as follows:

Page 21: South Devons Newsletter October 2012

21

BVD – as of the Spring Sale 2014 all Society Sale animals must be from herds

that are CHeCS accredited free of BVD, and also double vaccinated for BVD.

Johnes Disease – in addition to the above, as of the Spring Sale 2017 all

Society Sale animals must be from herds that are CHeCS accredited free of

Johnes.

These health rulings are intended to further raise the standard at sales, and

to give additional information and assurance to prospective buyers.

PERFORMANCE RECORDING

Just a reminder that weigh sheets are now posted on the website and can be

accessed by logging in using your ID and password (please ask the office if

you need help).

If you do not have internet access please would you request weigh sheets

from us – they will not otherwise be posted out to you.

As and when you submit weights, they should trigger a new report which will

be posted to the website (again accessed by logging in using ID and password)

towards the end of the following month. If you require a paper copy a small

charge will be made.
