• Issues that required addressed :

– A largely one-way flow of data into “MIS”– MIS rather than IS– Little added-value reporting to either staff or students– Reliance on external companies for systems maintenance,

upgrading, interconnection– Bought-in systems with redundant functionality that is not required– Multiple requests for the same information from different departments/faculties- Costly purchase, maintenance, annual licences and support- Different systems dealing with curriculum planning, timetabling,

attendance, results- Admin-heavy approaches (eg student absence)

Principles• Managers should only submit a piece of data a single time –

accuracy/efficiency• All systems should talk to each other and share core data• Users – staff should experience multiple benefits from the systems• Users- students should be able to view the information the college

holds about them and have access to key information to manage their time

• Systems should meet needs• Staff and students should have ready access to reports and information to help them • Systems should add value – not create additional work• Minimise capital costs, annual licence fees, maintenance, consultancy, customisation fees• Access from phones/tablets/PCs
