Principal’s Message

Welcome to our first newsletter for Term 3. I would like to congratulate a majority of students on the excellent manner in which they have commenced the term. It is great to see so many students wearing the correct uniform, attending class and engaging in their lessons.

Next week sees the launch of Education Week taking place at Dubbo College Senior Campus with many of South Campus students being involved in a range of activities. This includes a group of our students participating in a Game Changer Challenge at Western Plains Zoo. Our concert band will be playing at the opening, along with the attendance of our Captains who will accompany official guests to the opening ceremony.

Over the past few weeks, we have had many of our students competing as members of various sporting teams in the Ken Eggleton Cup. This competition concludes next week and I wish our students all the best in their respective sports.

The staff at South Campus continue to maintain high expectations in terms of student behaviour, application, effort and appropriate use of mobile phones. We appreciate your support in these areas to ensure your child has access to the best possible education.

Science Matters Volume 6Welcome to another exciting term in Science and a warm welcome to Mrs Vaessen who joins the Science faculty this term. All year groups will be studying an area of work based around the field of Physics this term:Year 7 will be learning all about what forces are and how they affect our lives. They will be investigating a variety of different forces including friction and magnetismYear 8 will be studying the different types of energies that exist. They will also investigate how energy can be transformed from one form to another.Year 9 begin the term investigating the principles of electricity before moving onto the waves of electromagnetic spectrum with a particular emphasis on light and soundYear 10 will be investigating the laws of motion developed by Newton and applying the knowledge to familiar situations such as driving a car safelyThis term promises to be filled with lots of hands on activities and experiments, so this is a timely reminder that students need to be wearing shoes that comply with WHS standards i.e. fully enclosed leather shoes. Students are also encouraged to bring their own stationery and books to ensure they are maximising their learning within the classroom.May the forces be with you.

Happy Birthday Harry Potter! Over the last fortnight, students and many staff have celebrated the popular series. Students borrowed the books, read headlines from The Daily Prophet, discussed which Hogwarts house they were in, and viewed the first film. Mrs Higgins made Hedwig pins and crocheted nine dolls including Harry, Hermione, Hedwig and Hagrid. On Wednesday, 31 July we served cake to mark Harry’s 39th

birthday. Thank you to everyone who joined us in the festivities.

Dear Parent/Carer

This term, Home School Liaison Officers and Aboriginal Student Liaison Officers, will interview students about absences (partial, lateness, whole days & truancy).

This will be done via face to face and phone interviews.

The law in New South Wales regarding attendance at school is very specific. Children between the ages of six and seventeen years must attend school on all days the school is open unless there are justified reasons for an absence. All absences must be satisfactorily explained to the school at which the child is enrolled within 7 days.

Students in Science class 7G have been learning about friction and forces by building Battle Bulldozers. This fun competition introduced our new Physics topic “The Science of Toys” by getting students to master the ancient art of LEGO to prove they understood how to increase the levels of friction and push their opponents backwards. The skills these students have developed will help them in their next challenge: Sumo-Wrestling Robots!

We have had a great start to the term and have welcomed into the academy a few new students that have moved to Dubbo. It’s been great to see the majority of the students come back to school with some great stories of the holidays.

This term our young men have some great opportunities ahead of them, camps, football games, morning trainings and community events to name a few. In order for our students to make these activities available to them, they are expected to have positive behaviour, above 85% attendance at school and attend Clontarf trainings. Clontarf staff will be working with school staff to make sure the students are working to the best of their abilities to achieve these results.

During our first week back we have had a group of students helping to run modified traditional Indigenous games at the Red Gum Childcare Centre as part of their NAIDOC Day celebrations. Also a group of students attended a Rotary dinner in support of their Club and one of our teachers. We have hosted welcome back lunches for each year level in week one.

The next fortnight, weeks 2 and 3 of the school calendar we will be back to morning trainings on both Wednesday and Friday mornings. Pick-ups start at 6.oo am.

Welcome to Term Three! We have a busy term coming up in Girls Academy. This term’s events include Ronny Gibbs 7’s in Bourke, The Dubbo Stampede and Girls Academy Sports. If any of our girls are inter-ested in participating in the events please put your name

down on the lists in the Girls Academy office. A number of our year 10 girls have been busy com-pleting their applications for the ‘Rising Stars Leadership Camp’ at Macquarie University. The camp will focus on leadership skills in the fields of academia, culture and community.Health Checks have also been rescheduled this term for any of the students who missed out or were away in Term Two. GA Staff will provide more information closer to the date. NAIDOC Day at Orana MallSouth Campus and Senior Campus celebrated NAIDOC Day at Orana Mall in the school holidays.Girls Academy were asked to perform Aboriginal dances which were led by the Uniting Barrang-gi-rra Program and give the Welcome to Country. The event was organised by Woolworths, who we would like to thank for their ongoing support and contribution to Girls Academy.
