Principal’s message……. Welcome back to another exciting year at Delroy Campus. We welcome all our Year 7 and new students and wish them well in all the opportunities Delroy offers. We also welcome our new teachers to Delroy. As mentioned above, we had three students who achieved excellent results by taking the opportunity to compete in the 2018 Patrick White Young Indigenous Writing Competition, very well done to those students. Our Welcome BBQ and Assessment Information Evening is on Wednesday 13 February and we look forward to a great evening meeting the parents/carers of our students. The evening will be a very informative one with explanations of assess-ment expectations. The Delroy Campus Student Representation Council Induction will take place at an Assembly on Friday 15 February 2019 at 12noon. The students were elected by their peers. The SRC provides participation and leadership opportunities for those elected students, enhancing their skills especially in communication, liaison, working with others, being a committee member and influencing decision making processes. The role of the SRC members is to promote the views of students and to encourage students to become actively involved in their school, DELROY - Y=YOUR SCHOOL. Last week our students from Years 7, 8 and 9 listened to Senior Constable Marty Paice School Liaison give a talk on Social Media and the various social media platforms and some of the dangers associated with those areas. His emphasis was on Resilience, Respect and Responsibility. These talks were very informative and students should have a better understanding of the laws involved with cyber bullying, harassment and the danger of predators online. Mrs Debbie Head Principal

A Message from the Arts Captains – Melanie and Johnathan Welcome back to Delroy, or if you’re new, Welcome to Delroy. This year just like the last, is going to be filled with opportunities like Vocal group, Ensemble Band, Aboriginal Dance group and many more, including Delroy’s Got Talent, and the Canberra Band Tour. We are so excited to be a part of this journey and look forward to sharing these amazing performances and opportunities with all.

West of the Divide Tour – Johnathan Woods The West of the Divide Tour was an amazing experience that enhanced my vocal skills, teaching me both useful knowledge and musical skills. Overall, I had two incredible workshops showing me new and inter-esting ways to sing. The tour was a breathtaking experience that I would definitely recommend to any aspiring musician.

Year 9 Café Fundamentals Year 9 Café Fundamental students practiced making some delicious milkshakes on Friday the 8th of February. Café Fundamentals is a new course which is being run for the first time at Delroy. Throughout the year, students will focus on all things to do with the Café Industry, particularly safe work practices, hygiene, allergies and intolerances, menu developing, customer service and catering for small school events. The Café Fundamentals class plan to develop and run a Café that will provide teachers with beautiful coffees, milkshakes, and

smoothies, as well as scrumptious snacks such as wraps, toasties, and sweets.

Welcome Back!

2019 has already started with great progress from all classes in Creative and Performing Arts. We are fortunate enough to run electives in Years 9 and 10 for both Visual Arts and Photography and Digital Media this year which is a big achievement to see so many Delroy students wanting to challenge their artistic skills. We welcome you all and can’t wait to produce some amazing works with you throughout the year. This term we are focusing on Portraiture over all art classes both Stages 4 (Yr 8) and 5 (Yrs 9and 10). This has been aligned so that we can host our own Delroy’s Archibald Prize at the end of the term. We will advertise a date and time as we get further in to the term. Each student will be creating a portrait of someone significant to themselves or to the community. They are to seek permission from this person by writing an approval note that states the reasons why they have chosen that particular person. Each work will be accompanied with an artist statement about the portrait. We look forward to sharing the great artworks that are created in Delroy in the Newsletter and in Exhibitions throughout the year. So watch this space! Students learned how to control pastel as a medium but also how to blend colours and create

emotive lines. Mrs Lorin McConnell CAPA

STRIVE Class Scoop…. The new school year provides the perfect opportunity to inform new members of the Delroy community about the Strive Class, which this year has also been rolled out in Year 7. Strive is a mainstream class in both Year 7 and Year 8, and as the name suggests, represents the intent of students striving to be their very best. The values of the class and ethos behind it is encompassed within its acronym -

Success Try Reach Individual Visualise Encouragement. The Strive Class has been structured to employ some of the best Middle School practices within a Secondary School context. Students in the Strive Class engage in learning that encompasses the same curriculum and outcomes as the rest of the Stage 4 cohort. The main difference is that both Strive classes have a home-teacher who delivers each of their core subjects (English, HSIE, Maths, PDHPE and Science). Students follow the same scope and sequence for Maths, PDHPE and Science as the rest of their grade, and where possible their English and HSIE studies are linked together in a Cross-Curriculum Integrated Unit of Work. Students join with the rest of their year group during their sport lessons, Art or Music classes, as well as Technology Mandatory electives. Woolworths Delroy Park has also been an instrumental part of Strive, providing strong sponsorship of the Year 8 class for the past two and a half years. We look forward to this continued partnership throughout 2019. Rachel Cody and Danielle Sparrow
