Convocation September 22

A very successful Convocation 2010 was held at South on September 22, for all employees of the district. Chancellor Wakefield and the district send a giant THANK YOU to South for the graceful hospitality and for the work of South’s many volunteers, especially emcee Jean Hernandez.

Convocation opened with a video introducing all three new presidents as they were welcomed on their campuses.

Keynote speaker Dr. Mark Milliron, deputy director of Postsecondary Improvement at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation spoke about the multiple, rapid changes that new technologies, particularly the Internet, have brought about.

To view Convocation, review Mark Milliron’s presentation, see his Powerpoint slides, and/or see the video, visit www.scctv.com, and click on “Convocation.”

CAmPus Security Reports

September 14A person in a red van was reported trying to steal aluminum from behind the Aviation building. It was later discovered that a right horizontal stabilizer, valued at $5,000, had been stolen from the Aviation tool room.

September 24 & 27A student reported receiving sexually harassing messages on her Facebook account. She “blocked” the suspect from viewing her account and notified Facebook that she was receiving inappropriate messages from the suspect. The victim was given information on how to contact a South counselor, and information on how to obtain a Temporary Restraining Order against the suspect. The suspect, a Level-1 Sex Offender, is a former student at the college. His photo has been shown to his former instructors and they have been asked to notify Security if he is seen on campus.

September 27The front passenger tire of a Toyota Camry parked in the Olympic Hall parking lot was slashed.

September 28Upon returning to her car after attending class, a student noted a dent in the driver’s side rear bumper and white paint from another vehicle. The car was parked in the Olympic Hall parking lot and no note was left.

September 28Three females got into an argument in the Library. It was determined that they were not students at the college. No one was hurt or assaulted and the girls left campus.

September 30Security was called to assist a student who reported being sexually harassed in the Cascade building courtyard. After the suspect made unwanted physical gestures toward the victim, the victim called Security. As he was walking the victim to her car, an officer spotted the suspect and, after noting odd behavior, called Seattle Police Department. The SPD arrested the suspect for trespassing.

Arboretum NewsSeptember 11 marked the beginning of regular Docent tours in the Arboretum. The 10 docents, all former LHO program students, conduct one-hour tours the second Saturday of each month.

AANAPISI Update Submitted by Rosie Rimando

As the AANAPISI program winds down in this, its third year, many of the initiatives and pilot programs have been developed in an “incubator” and are now ready to be integrated into the college. We will regularly notify you of how each initiative will live on after the grant ends in one year on September 30, 2011.

AAPI Study GroupTuesdays and Thursdays through Fall quarter11 am – 1 pm in CAS 110This summer we piloted an AAPI study group that met informally and attracted primarily Pacific Islander students to participate (an underrepresented group from our neighboring communities). The group has grown, and they will continue to meet through the quarter to focus on Academics, emphasize importance of Culture, and work to build Community. While the group targets AAPI students, it is a multicultural group and ALL students are welcome!

A ceremony was held October 5 to honor South’s five recipients of the Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund (APIASF)/Walmart Foundation scholarship. South is just one of three institutions offered these one-time, $2,500 scholarships for full-time, first-year Asian and Pacific Islander American community college students. The Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund (APIASF) is the nation's largest 501c(3) non-profit organization that provides scholarships to Asian and Pacific Islander Americans (APIAs) with financial need. APIASF representatives recognized Chanda Ishisaka, Vanessa Reed, Rosie Rimando, and May Toy Lukens for their efforts in facilitating the scholarship award process.

Clustered Learning Communities STICK! The fourth time around and classes are waitlisted! This quarter’s CLC of English 098 and HDC 101 (College Success), offered and taught by Kit Bean and Stephen Coates-White, has a waitlist! Why is this good news? Linking a developmental education course and a college success course is increasing student success: data from two CLCs last quarter show that out of 38 portfolios submitted, 35 passed for a success rate of 92%! Filling the course means improving achievement for as many students as possible. CLCs also have Peer Navigators assigned to them to work with students on navigating and accessing college resources.

FACS (Family Actions for College Success) Not just for parents and their kids The FACS workshop for families of South students was held October 12. The event is designed to help families learn how to support their student’s success.

Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn proclaimed October 5, 2010 “Community College Day.” The honor coincided with the first-ever White House Summit on Community Colleges, hosted by Dr. Jill Biden. That morning, Chancellor Jill Wakefield, along with Presidents Oertli, Killpatrick and Mitsui, held a press conference on the steps of Seattle Central to provide a local tie-in to this important event. Students from each of our three campuses whose lives have been affected by the economy shared their personal stories of how community colleges have helped them turn their lives around. Thanks to Northwest Wine Academy student Olivier Santos for representing South.
