Betty Thompson 1928-2017

Art aRound Town 2017 is dedicated to Betty Thompson, a South St. Paul

artist, who passed away earlier this year. Betty created a variety of art

pieces that are part of the tour and are showcased within South St Paul.

Betty will be missed.

Ethnic Heirloom

South St. Paul City Hall: 125 – 3rd

A clay wall-relief sculpture portraying South St. Paul’s history, ethnics, and tradi-

tions by Betty Thompson. The focus is the immigrant family which represents the

21 ethnic groups that settled in the community seeking a better way of life for their

families. This sculpture was commissioned by the Centennial Commission as a

gift to the City of South St. Paul. It was unveiled during Kaposia Days on June 26,

1988.

This 1976 sculpture, by Robert L. Zins, features horns that are symbolic of the

stockyard industry of South St. Paul. The peace pipe with ceremonial ornamenta-

tion is significant in many ways. It has growth rings on it and it has notched mark-

ings for movement of the Sioux Kaposia tribes. It is based on an inlaid replica of

the Sioux nomadic farmer tribes. The quill is symbolic of the Declaration of Inde-

pendence, Minnesota as a state and the Age of Advancement. It has splits rang-

ing from large to small symbolic of the wars and battles of this country. The date

represents South St. Paul’s location and official recognition as a community. The

sculpture is located on the South St. Paul City Hall by South Metro Fire.

Dakota County Historical Society:

The Dakota County Historical Society always a variety of treasures for the com-

munity to enjoy. Take a tour of the museum and see it has to offer. From historic

photos, to art to revolving historic displays. You never know what you will find at

the Dakota County Historical Society.

South St. Paul School District: 104 – 5th Avenue South - South Wall A massive mural covers an entire wall of Key Community Bank in South St. Paul. Created by Robert L. Zins in 2006, the mural tells the story of the making of South St. Paul and the many businesses and institutions that have mattered to the city over the years. A must see!

Fleming Field • 1725 Henry Ave • 10:00 to 3:00 pm

Come discover what Fleming Field has to offer. Over the years, a variety of model airplanes have been hand crafted and are a great addition to the Fleming Field’s hanger. While there, check of the fascinating history of Fleming Field.

Take a self guided tour around South St. Paul and see what the community has to offer. From parks

to sculptures to businesses and more, the community has a variety of pieces to see and enjoy.

South St. Paul Pubic Library: 106 – 3

Untitled: Located behind the check-out desk on the first floor at the Library is a com-missioned piece for the Bicentennial based on South St. Paul’s rich heritage. Created by local artist Betty Thompson, this is one of a variety pieces created by Betty that can be found in South St. Paul. This piece is divided up into 13 images describing the his-tory of South St. Paul. A full description of what each represents is located at the South St. Paul Library. Original canvases: Upstairs at the South Paul Library is a treasure chest of or local art. A few years back, the South St. Paul Library conducted a local artist contest and over 10 pieces of original works of art were commissioned and are now are proudly displayed in the children’s section of the South St. Paul Library. They were all based on books from the Library. Additionally, if you look over the Children’s Liberian’s desk, there is a small Betty Thompson sculpture. We are not sure of the history, but are glad to display it. The South St. Paul Public Library also hosts a variety of art classes, invites in musi-cians, dances and so much more throughout the year and on your way out, say hello to Lucy. “Lucy In Love,” by artist Barbara Bjornson, was donated to the South St. Paul Public Library by Greg Schouweiler. Lucy stands proudly and greets visitors to and from the Library. It is a great place for photos.

Bircher Hill Pottery: 1600 Willis Avenue (NE corner of Wllis & Bircher) Bircher Hill Pottery was founded by Joe Tromiczak in 2012 after a 25-year hiatus from ceramics. Starting out in a small basement studio, a move became inevitable as our business grew, and a year later we found ourselves living in a home built in the 1860s, with an adjacent outbuilding as a pottery studio and gallery. From this new location also came the name Bircher Hill Pottery, named for the steep-hilled street bordering our property, and the family that lived in our house over 150 years ago.

Avenue South • Normal Business hours Historic photos are a fun form of art and the Coop has a nice selection of historic selec-tion of South St. Paul history. Great place to stop for an afternoon snack or dinner while checking out the historic photos.

Minnesota Music Factory • 609 Marie Ave • Normal Business Hours Art comes in many forms and the Minnesota Music Factory has an outstanding collec-tion of guitars & art work accessories. Tony is bringing in some special guitars for Art aRound Town. Check out what Minnesota Music Factory has to offer.

Tour the Town July 18-19

Grandview Park: 350 Grand Avenue W- parks open until 10:00 pm

The neighborhood kids got involved in this art project and created adorable flower pots for

the garden site maintained by Kris thru the Blooming Parks Program. Then check out the

view overlooking the Mississippi River where you can watch a passing barge or a bald eagle

soaring.

Native American Sculpture

Simons Ravine • 1308 N Concord St. • Park hours On June 23, 2007, the American Indian Sculpture and Memory Paver Path was dedicated.

The sculpture was created by Native American artists Bill LeDeaux and David Estrada.

REAP (River Environmental Action Project) raised $23,000 for the commissioned sculpture

to be placed at Simon’s Ravine Trailhead. Simon's Ravine Trailhead is an access point to

the Dakota County regional trail system that travels west through Kaposia Park and east

through Kaposia Landing and along the Mississippi River. Simon’s Ravine is named for John

and Anna Simon, early settlers who in 1878 acquired the property where the Kaposia Park

Ravine exists today.

“The Industrious Cooperative Ant” Wild Flower Levee Park:

South of the Grand/Hardman Ave’s Spiral Bridge • Park Hours

Developed in 2003, Wildflower Levee Park is the permanent home to the 2008 Minnesota

DNR’s Adopt-a-River sculpture featured at the Minnesota State Fair. “The Industrious Co-

operative Ant” by sculptor Rabi Sanfo was created by garbage collected through the Adopt A

River clean-ups. Wildflower Levee Park is located on the Mississippi River Regional Trail

just south of the Spiral Bridge at Grand and Hardman Avenues and north of the Wakota

Bridge. Wildflower Levee Park is accessed by trail only.

South St. Paul Central Square Sculpture: CSCC • 100 – 7th Avenue N - outside Bruce Still, artist, approaches motion as an added dimension to three dimensional sculpture,

and interpret his style of motion as having a lively energy, playing with gravity. Interested in

the art of pleasant motion, a slow tranquil motion that in some viewer’s judgment, is relaxing

and almost hypnotic to watch. Outdoor sculptures move with the wind. Indoor pieces are

operated manually by starting the bottom weight swing, while the counter weight slows the

motion. Precision balance is the trademark of Bruce Stillman sculptures. The mass and

weight of steel, often combined with granite, are transformed under the artist’s guidance into

delicate, graceful works that captivate one’s attention and stimulate childlike wonder.

Celebrate at the Square July 20, 2017 • 3:00 to 8:00 pm

Central Square Community Center

100- 7th Avenue North On Thursday, join us and celebrate at the Square. Central Square Commu-nity Center will have local artists including pottery, photography, theatre, oils, jewelry, music and more. There will be interactive booths, a children’s area and everyone is invited to be part of creating the 2017 SSP Art aRound Town community piece of art.

Live music will fill the square with the band Sawyer’s Dream and we’ll be introducing dueling Sparks-a-phones.

Creating a Community Chalk Quilt

What Do You Love About South St. Paul?

Come to Central Square and share what you love about South St. Paul. There will be blank chalk squares for you to share creating a community chalk quilt in the amphitheater. Create an individual square or a family square. This is free to do and the chalk will be provided.

Be part of the 2017 Art aRound Town Rock Mosaic Community piece. Join us at the Square and paint a rock or two for the rock mosaic piece. Paint and rocks will be provided. Once the rocks are painted, they will be handcrafted together to create a piece of art that represents the community. This year it is focusing on the river. Thanks to Lauri & Kelly Flatley for organizing and facilitating.

A Generous Donation………

The City of South St. Paul received a very

generous donation of a Bruce Stillman

sculpture by Darrol Bussler. This will be on

display during Art aRound Town and other

upcoming events.

Created in 1983, the wings move with a

slight touch or a light breeze. The motion

reveals a variety of colors from different

angles. It is a calming piece that we would

like to share with the community.
