Religion Although Roman Catholicism remains the faith of about two-thirds of the population, Protestant denominations have increased markedly in recent decades. Approximately 1 in 3 Guatemalan’s are Protestant, (mostly Evangelical and Pentecostal).

Economy Guatemala is the largest and most populous of the Central American countries.

The agricultural sector accounts for one-fourth of the GDP, two-thirds of exports, and half of the labor force. Coffee, sugar, and bananas are the main products.

People

More than half of Guatemalans are descendants of indigenous Mayan peoples. Westernized Mayans and mestizos, (mixed European and indigenous ancestry), are known as Ladinos. Most of Guatemala’s population is rural, though urbanization is accelerating. Guatemala City, (approximately 3 million residents), is expanding at a rapid rate. Rural-to-urban migration is fueled by a combination of government neglect of the countryside, low farm gate prices, oppressive labor conditions on rural plantations, the high concentration of arable land in the hands of a few wealthy families, and the (often unrealistic) perception of higher wages in the city. Generally, impoverished farmers move to the outskirts of the city in precarious dwellings on the slopes of ravines.

Family Life

Much of Guatemalan life revolves around the family. Guatemalans say that parents are espejos (mirrors): through them, you learn who you are and what you can become. Children are able to depend on their parents for advice and guidance throughout their lives. Family members tend to live near each other and Guatemalans rarely live or spend much time alone. An invitation to a party or social function, for example would be interpreted to include all of the family members, including children and grandparents. Families also care for elderly relatives, and godparents are considered an important part of the family. However, traditional family patterns are changing as Guatemalans adopt more North American values.

Guatemala has two distinct climate zones. The tropical climate zone encompasses areas between sea level and roughly 1,000 m (3,300 ft) of altitude and is hot and humid day and night, year round. Daytime temperatures can go as high as 40° C (100° F) and nighttime temperatures rarely drop below 20° C (70° F). The temperate zone extends from approximately 1,000 m (3,300 ft) to 2,000 m (6,600 ft). Daytime temperatures rarely exceed 30° C (85° F) and nights are pleasantly cool. The rains begin in June, and with them come the mosquitoes – bring rain gear, and repellent. July through September is muggy and buggy.

Wayne & Jeny Monson The Monson’s began their ministry to Guatemala in 1989 by participating on short term mission trips. It was on those trips that God started to give them a heart for the people. In 1993, Wayne resigned his sales position, Jeny left her nursing agency, and they sold their home, answering the call to become full time missionaries.

Ministry in Guatemala The Monson’s work with the people of Guatemala in many different ways and they use teams to help fulfill their mission. They take teams to villages to experience the mission field firsthand by working alongside national pastors in their churches and ministries. The teams help with evangelism, outreach events, crusades, children’s ministry, medical clinics, uplifting the poor and needy, and in the construction of churches, pastoral houses and Bible schools. The Monson’s have hosted over 100 teams with over 1000 team members. Their work is mainly in the southwest and northern areas of Guatemala.

Our Part We will be taking with us a practiced and polished VBS (Vacation Bible School) program and various programmatic and creative elements to be incorporated into evening worship services. We will spend each day in a different village or town immersing ourselves in the life of that community. Partnering with the local church and pastor, we will engage the kids with our VBS program. Evening services will follow, where we will preach the gospel and minister by the laying on of hands and prayer. The remainder of the day will be spent playing soccer, doing hair, and loving on the kids in that village. The opportunity to be fed by the locals, trying traditional village dishes, may also present itself. A special part of this trip is our food give out day. We will go to a remote village, devastated by recent drought and tropical storms, bringing relief to many hurting families. We will be bagging and providing staple food supplies like black beans, corn, rice, and cooking oil. Finishing off our trip is a relaxing day in Antigua. Antigua is the most visited city by tourists in Guatemala. Antigua is a city 10 blocks x 10 blocks and has a variety of sidewalk shopping, two market places, historic architecture, and picturesque Cathedrals. Do you have a passion for outreach or want to be stretched beyond your comfort zone? Perhaps it’s the culinary delights of the traditional village food or the bartering in the markets of Antigua you’re interested in; either way this trip is for you!

Raising support is a HUGE part of the mission trip experience. Even if you have the means to pay for a trip in full, it is our belief that raising support is a key part of a mission experience. It allows students to see the goodness of God additionally through the provision of the trip cost.

Raising support is a partnership – us and God! The phrase “God will provide” can often lead us into a mindset of laziness or lead us to an apathetic approach to raising support. “All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.” Proverbs 14:23. Not only is this mindset unbiblical, it will also jeopardize the team’s effectiveness if ALL funds are not raised.

We encourage the team members to take an individual approach to raising support. Support letters are a great place to start, and a sample support letter is included in this informational packet.

The total cost of the trip is $1700. This will include; • All transportation costs, including round trip airline

tickets & in-country transport • Accommodations • Most meals within the country • Ministry materials • Ziplining • Missionary offering

Payment Remittance

Your primary venue to collect donations will be through your own personal fundraising page on the Managed Missions website. (More details to follow) It is the responsibility of the participant to collect and track all contributions to cover the trip cost. Participants should give all cash/check donations to the team leaders at team meetings. Note: it is imperative that the students’ contributors make checks written out to Hosanna! and not the individual person.

Contributions are tax deductible with the exception of the $200 deposit and cash (unless the donor is noted). Hosanna! has complete discretion and control over the use of all donated funds. All contributions are non-refundable and non-transferable.
