After networking a bit andfinding out that there was a dealershipopportunity with Ditch Witch, it becameclear that it would be a good fit for me.Although my background and experiencewas with Cat dealers and Caterpillar, bothmanufacturers represent value, quality, productivity and durability in their respec-tive products, as well as have great brandrecognition.Romano said that Ditch Witch is an interesting family

owned success story that has grown to be innovative withwhat is now a worldwide brand. However, manufacturinghas remained in the United States, in Perry, Okla. When Romano originally acquired the businesses, he

leased the Topside Road/Blount County facility from theprevious owner. While it was well known to older cus-tomers, it was not in a convenient location for Knoxvillegrowth areas or in the normal travel area to attract new cus-tomers. This new location is in a much higher traffic and growth

area of Knoxville, and much more convenient for customersright off the Lovell Road exit on I-40, Romano said.Romano fully renovated the 6,000 sq. ft. (557.4 sq m)

facility, which is located on 1.2 acres. There are currentlyfive employees, with plans to add two to three more. RoyRolen is the service manager, and he has two service tech-nicians. Trent Sullivan is the parts counter sales person, andDean Terry is the sales representative. The company deals with utility horizontal directional

drilling contractors, rental houses, utility companies, munic-ipalities, construction companies, hardscape and landscapecontractors, plumbing contractors and electrical contractors, among others.Whether its electric, gas, water, sewer, TV cable or

Internet service, everyone wants it underground, Romanosaid. Underground is not new for water, sewer and gas, but

its only been in the last 20 years or so that residential sub-divisions have gone underground completely in the streetsand to each house. Also, with the tremendous demand forcable TV and faster broadband Internet service, there aremiles of cable to be placed underground in suburban andrural areas. The demand for hardscapes and irrigation also has

increased the need for small trenching and/or plowingequipment. With the latest directional drilling equipmentyou can drill through most any underground conditions, including rock. There is a busy network of utilities under-ground already so locating existing pipes, cables, etc. is acritical issue now before digging, trenching or drilling anynew holes underground. There are a lot of old pipes andcable that need replacement so the need for undergroundequipment is here to stay for a while.Romano said he plans to expand the business in the areas

of rock drilling and rental, which will require the addition ofanother service technician and sales representative in 2015.According to Romano, he got his start in the parts depart-

ment of Milton CAT in New Hampshire in 1975. After 15years of sales and sales management experience there, hetook sales, rental and used equipment responsibility for HOPenn Machinery, the dealer in the southern region of NewYork. In 1995 when Cat was looking to establish a worldwide

used equipment organization for dealers they called on

Romano to start up Caterpillar Redistribution Services Inc.,a wholly owned subsidiary in Nashville, Tenn. In 1999, heassisted the venture capital start-up IronPlanet online equip-ment auctions before getting the call in 2000 to CEOWesTrac, the Cat dealer in Sydney Australia.During his time in Sydney, Romano also was asked to

manage the development of WesTrac China, its new territo-ry in Beijing and northeast China. In 2008, as part ofWesTracs long term rental strategy, Romano was asked tobe interim CEO of Coates Hire, the largest rental companyin Australia, which WesTrac acquired with the CarlyleGroup. In his new venture, Romano has not left his zeal for the

industry behind, and continues to strive for excellence. We encourage customers to visit our new facility, and in

particular our well stocked parts lobby, for their needs,Romano said. We provide solutions to the best of our abil-ity and with urgency. I want customers to leave with nodoubt in their mind that when they need something or havea problem, we are their preferred supplier. Customers dontwant to feel that they have to check or shop around, theywant to trust that you will do the best you can for them everytime. For more information, visit www.ditchwitchtn.com. Profits from these exca-vators are donated to the Wounded Warrior Project,a non-profit organization supporting injured veter-ans and their families.Weve used Kobelco equipment for several

years, said Kimball Wetherington, chief operatingofficer of Wetherington Tractor Service. In the pastwe had a SK350 excavator, and when the timecame that we needed a larger machine again, theKobelco Wounded Warrior SK350 caught my eye.We like the lifting capacity of Kobelco excavatorssince were using them to set large material. Wewere already familiar with the machine, so thatswhat we purchased.GS Equipment is the reason we chose Kobelco

equipment. You can buy the best machine, but if thedealership doesnt respond when theres an issue, itdoesnt do you any good. We like the machine, butthe reason we bought it goes back to our relation-ship with GS Equipment. If something goes wrong,

Focus 4 Intent on Making Older Iron Look as Good as NewBy Eric OlsonCEG CORRESPONDENT

Randy Fitts offers an extensive menu of equipment serv-ice work at his company, but it is the painting done by hiscrew he wants local contractors to know about.Making construction equipment look brand new again is

the specialty of Focus 4 Inc., a service company locatedsouthwest of Orlando, Fla., just off Interstate 4.The firm is in a 50,000 sq. ft. (4,645 sq m) facility at the

Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers site, where Focus 4 was foundedin 2008 to be a service company that supported the large auc-tion outfit.

Focus 4 still does all of the painting and service work forRitchie Bros., but it also has begun to expand its non-auctionpainting, with an aim toward being a hub for local construc-tion firms to bring their equipment in for painting. Focus 4 is attractive to local contractors because of its

convenient location in central Florida right off I-4, Fittssaid. Our sense of urgency is unparalleled to any other firmin the industry. We understand deadlines because of the auc-tion business that we service. We know the longer themachine is in our shop the more downtime the customerexperiences.Fitts said that his company does all of its painting

    within two 100 by 30 ft. (30.5 by 9.1 m) painting bays

at its facility. His crews use the latest high volume low pres-sure (HVLP) spray guns that apply low emission and lowvolatile organic compound VOC paint.Additionally, in keeping with its intention to be as envi-

ronmentally friendly as possible, Focus 4s wash racksprocess and recycle all the water used at its four-bay pressurewashing facility. Here they clean, detail and polish trucks, trailers and equipment. The companys painting operation can do both standard

and custom jobs and because the size of its paint shop canhandle numerous amounts of large equipment, Fitts said.

Focus 4 does all of the painting and service work for Ritchie Bros., but it also hasbegun to expand its non-auction painting, with an aim toward being a hub for localconstruction firms to bring their equipment in for painting.

We haveabout 60 percent of the U.S. marketfor that product, so now we are devel-oping the lift truck division in theNorth American market. Overallglobally, we are actually number twoin the overall size of the business. Wewill probably build somewhere in theregion of 750 units this year. Linderis currently renting, leasing, and sell-ing KoneCranes lift trucks rangingfrom 15 to 80 ton capacity.Stevens said the support Linder

provides is a significant factor in theirbusiness relationship. Its a proper relationship based on

the fact that they have invested instock, so we can take machines outfor demo and that means a lot. Theyhave also invested heavily in the sup-port side of things because withoutthe support of the machines that canlet you down in a big way in thisindustry. The support system is some-thing Linder invested well into aswell. I am more than pleased with theway things are going and the direc-

tion we are going into and we expectto grow the business into some otherareas as well expanding along withthem as they expand their businesstoo. We have kept some areas openfor that expansion to happen as well.Fil Filipov, owner of Atlas Crane,

also took time out from theOktoberfest to discuss his company, and how it has benefited by workingwith Linder. Atlas is a German company. It has

three large manufacturing facilities inGermany. Around 500 people workfor the company. We are producingarticulated cranes and excavatorsfrom 14-ton up to 80-ton with rail-road version of it, material handlerswith wheeled excavators as well ascrawlers.Atlas has been around since 1919,

1918 in Germany, said Filipov. Itsvery reliable brand. We are wellknown in the market. My business ismainly Germany and the Euro zone,so now we are expanding into theUnited States.Filipov believes Linder will help

his company expand. Linder will mainly be handling

the material handling equipment.Atlas has a full line of attachments, buckets and everything else that oneneeds for the machine. We are establishing a very

good relationship with Linder, said Filipov. They are a superorganization. We obviouslyhave to fight for our marketshare in the United States andwe are establishing U.S.required machines, as we allknow the U.S. market requiresdifferent safety and differentconfigured machines, so we arereally working very well withthem.Linders new 22,000 sq. ft.

Proposed Expansion of EPA Authority Carries Consequences inition moves forward, the EPA wouldreclassify ditches and other landscape fea-tures that occasionally carry water as tribu-taries to navigable waterways as if ariverboat is going to plot a course through apuddle in your front yard. It would make theagency the nations chief land manager able to regulate development, farming, min-ing and other activity in large swaths of thecountry. The EPA has repeatedly dismissed the

concerns of small businesses, declaring thatthe dramatic expansion of the waters defi-nition will have no negative economicimpact. This assessment cannot be correct.Increased regulation equals greater costs upand down the supply chain. As the suppliersof critical equipment for the construction, mining, farming and other heavy industries, our members understand that increased costsresult in fewer projects, smaller revenue anda dismal outlook. The proposed expansion of EPA authority

carries a variety of consequences for indus-try: The rule would make most ditches into

tributaries. Routine maintenance activitiesin ditches and on-site ponds and impound-ments could trigger permits that can cost$100,000 or more. These permitting requirements would

likely trigger additional environmentalreviews that would add years to project com-pletion time and often require costly restora-tion/mitigation projects. The proposal would likely also result in

more stringent storm water managementrequirements, which would affect retailers, companies with large parking lots, big boxstores, etc.Beyond the negative business impacts of

the proposed rule, AEDs comments high-light that in drafting it the agency failed tofollow existing law on numerous counts. The result is bad for business, useless inservice of the environment and ignorant oflegislative, judicial and regulatory mandates. Not only is the proposal wrong, it is illegal. For more information, visit www.aed-

The W 220 like the W250i will mill up to 14 in. (35.5cm) deep, at a nominal millingwidth of 87 in. (221 cm). Its powerplant provides 766 hp, with anoperating weight of 80,160 lb.(136,360 kg). The W 220 can pro-duce up to 900 tons (816 t) perhour of reclaimed asphalt pave-ment (RAP).The Wirtgen W 220 can remove

asphalt layers more than 1 ft. (.3 m)deep and tough portland cementconcrete pavements as well at ahigh advance rate. Three differentmilling drum speeds can be adjust-ed from the operators platform:high speed for large-scale millingof thin lifts, medium for standardsurface courses and low speed foroptimized fuel consumption andlow cutting tool wear. While the W 220 comes with a

standard 87 in. milling drum width, via the optional FCS Light system,a 98-in. (249 cm) drum can be fit-ted. FCS Light also permits easyexchange of drums with standardtool spacing with those of wider ortighter tool spacings. The standard milling width of

    the W 220 can be extended withadditional milling drum units forworking widths of 8.2 ft. (2.50 m),10.2 ft. (3.10 m), 11.5 ft. (3.50 m),12.5 ft. (3.80 m), up to a maximum14.4 ft. (4.40 m).In addition to removing com-

plete pavement sections in a singlepass, the W 220 permits individuallayers to be removed very econom-ically. The intelligent WIDRIVEmachine management system andthe three selectable milling drumspeeds keep operating costs verylow for a cold milling machine inthis performance class. The W 220 operating platform

provides the operator with an opti-mal work environment, whichspeeds productivity and providesan abundance of operating infor-mation. Part of this intuitive oper-ating environment a multifunc-tional control display operatesas a practical information hub. Itcan be swung to the left or right ofthe operator together with theLevel Pro control panel and dis-

plays operating status and servic-ing data in an easily comprehensi-ble way.The control display provides

user-friendly diagnostic optionswith clear graphics for identifyingthe source of any problem. Anotherhandy function is the logging ofjob data: at the end of the day, thelog can show how many truckshave been loaded and the overalltonnage achieved. The new W 220s parallel-to-

surface (PTS) system automatical-ly aligns the cold mill parallel tothe road surface. The systemensures simple, accurate operationof the machine in demanding pro-filing jobs. PTS also assists theoperator with positioning themachine in the milled cut to initiate

the milling process. In automaticmode, the system takes care of allthe steps that the operator wouldotherwise need to select manuallyone after another; the need for rep-etitious manual correction is elimi-nated.The operator activates the inte-

gral Level Pro control system atthe flick of a switch, and all fourcrawler track units of the largemilling machine are loweredsimultaneously at high speed. When the milling drum unit reach-es the surface to be milled, the low-ering speed is reduced and themilling drum slowly penetrates thematerial down to the set depth. Theautomatic process helps to preventexcessive cutting tool wear or eventool failure when commencing the

milling operation. The same applies when the W

220 is aligned transverse to thedirection of travel. In many cases, cold milling machines need toovercome significant differences inheight when being moved into orout of the milled cut. The integrat-ed four-fold, full-floating axle bal-ances out all four track units quick-ly and reliably to reduce themachines lateral inclination to aminimum. This lends a highdegree of stability to the largemilling machine, according to themanufacturer. The W 220s intelligent speed

control (ISC) system ensures max-imum traction.
