It’s TimeIt’s time to journey to Athens. It’s time to gear up to learn more techniques, artistic styles, socialize with great friends and colleagues, eat, drink and be mer-ry. The biennial SEPPA convention is only days away and I hope you have made plans to be there. Our convention chair, George Singleton, has been work-ing hard for two years to bring you a convention full of incredible talent. Way to go George!

If you have not registered for the convention, please do so immediately. All you have to do is visit the SEPPA website and fill out the registration form. There are pre-convention classes as well as the normal three-day slate. There is something for everyone.

It’s also time to say thanks and adieu. After almost four years of being the editor of Southern Exposure magazine, I will be stepping down. This issue will be my last. The journey of this magazine has been tre-mendous and I am proud of our accomplishments. Our magazine won 1st Place two consecutive years with the PPA Affiliate Editors competition. I have been blessed to work with some of the best writ-ers, of which I can also call them cherished friends. They have tirelessly donated their time and knowl-edge to our wonderful association. This magazine would have never had the success it did without their invaluable contribution, A special thanks goes to former SEPPA president, Rick Gibbons, the best proofreader and voice of encouragement a person could have.

With great joy to each of you, I say thank you for join-ing me on this journey. I will forever be grateful.

Paying It Forward

Several weeks ago I was approached by the local community college and asked if I would take over teaching the class on how to start a photogra-phy business. The class runs for 6 weeks, the adviser explained, and would be fairly small--about 9-12 students. Without hesitating I told Melanie I’d be glad to take the class--after all, it would be an op-portunity for me to work with emerging profession-als to be sure they got a good start on their journey.

After reviewing the syllabus I decided that I would teach it “as is” for this first time--making adjustments and tweaking along the way if the class was of-fered again.

Fast forward to our first class night: 9 students showed up for the first class...my continuing edu-cation supervisor did all the little housekeeping chores...rules for the classroom, how to be sure you’re counted for each class and so on...and then I was on my own.

My class runs from 6:30 to 9:30 on Wednesday nights-and I don’t mind telling you that 3 hours is a LONG time when you’ve been away from the classroom as I have. But we spent that first nighttt getting to know each other--I listened to each of them tell me their skill set, what they wanted to get from the class, what they liked to photograph most and how close they were to actually starting or re-engineering their own businesses.

I discovered that I had a diverse group--a stay-at-home mom, a security officer, a corporate mom whose job is dissolving, an event photographer, a nature photographer--of my 9 students I had 9 dif-ferent specialties!

I talked with them about the legal “stuff” they needed to do to be in compliance within the state of NC...shared with them a few personal “don’t do what I did” stories and before I knew it the class was over and I was excited to be planning for week 2.

As the weeks progressed we talked about COGS,t how to find vendors, building websites and my stu-dents began to share with me their hopes and their dreams. I found myself thinking about them during the day--looking for a family marketing book for Jonathan, pulling some old reference books for Jen and dusting off a senior posing guide for Mary.

We did role-playing with Tim when he wanted to know phrasing to help him close a bride. And we congratulated him on his success when he shared that he had revamped his prices based on what he had learned in class AND booked the wedding.

We cheered with Jen when she shared that the first contact form from her new website had been completed.

My mantra for this class has been maintaining the integrity of the industry and producing quality work. And even though I’m the teacher for this class, it’s my students who are teaching me--that their dedi-cation and commitment to this craft is high--they have a thirst for knowledge and a desire to learn that reminds me of my early days in the business...when I, too, had a fire in the belly and couldn’t learn it fast enough.

I share this story with you this month because you never know from where your next blessing will come...as a “seasoned veteran” it’s all too easy to get caught up in the “busy-ness” of our lives. We forget, sometimes, to pay it forward.

So...to all the photographers from whom I’ve learned over the years I say “thank you” for sharing your time and your energy.

Now it’s my turn, paying it forward and reaping rewards beyond measure.

I love my job!

Larson’s Light Bender = Light Fantastic

I have always been enamored with light, especially how to manipulate it. I have tried just about every type of light modifier on the market but I’ve never seen anything like this before. Originally designed by Larry Peters for Larson Enterprises, the light bender was intended to be used under the eyes to illuminate them and create a half moon shaped highlight in the bottom of the pupils. I have discov-ered a few other ways to use this versatile strip light. It’s the best thing I have seen in a very long time! It can be positioned to be a main, fill and hair light all at one time!

In the first photo I have used the Light Bender in a horizontal position placing the center hot spot aimed directly at the subject’s face. Notice the shadow on the left side of her face; it actually re-sembles a large diffused main light and a specular grid spot placed striking the face at the exact same angle, cool! (I have included overall shots so that you can get a feel for where I positioned the Light Bender I did turn on my accent strip lights in these photos so that you can see the overall scene better, but these were not used in the sample photos).

Photo 2 shows the quality of light that you get when you feather the Light Bender toward the back-ground and Photo 3 illustrates what you get when you feather it toward the camera,. Notice how you loose the specularity in the highlights and how more diffused the facial plane seems to be. . It actually adds a good amount of light to the background as well as the face.

Now here’s where the fun really begins. The last three photos are an example of what happens when you rotate the Light Bender vertically.

If you want a main, fill and hair light, position the Light Bender above your subject so that the center hot spot is at about a 45 degree angle from the center axis of the face. This allows some light to fall on the hair and under the chin as a fill, WOW! ( Photo 4 )

Lower it to a normal height, with the center aimed

directly level at the face, and you get this quality, see Photo 5 and overall shot 5)

Mysterious light can be achieved by placing the Light Bender under the face, Photo 6 and overall 6.

Any way you position it the New Light Bender is the most versatile soff box you will ever own.

Super SeniorsAward-winning Christian Photographer, Melanie Anderson is a Certified Professional Photographer, a board member of the PPA (Professional Photographers of America), MDPPA (Maryland Chapter) and Washington County Chamber of Commerce. She is also a 2011 Maryland Achievement Award winner and received the #1 Photography Studio award from Hagerstown Magazine for their annual HotList for 2011 and 2012. Anderson Photographs is a 3000 square foot custom photographic studio located in the Arts & Entertainment District of downtown Hagerstown, MD, and holds nearly 400 sessions with individuals and families every year.

Senior Sales can be intimidating, overwhelming and sometimes just plain heartbreaking. Unfortunately, no matter how well you photograph and how great your images are, if you aren’t making any money doing it, then what’s the point? This session gives practical advice on helping you develop a sales pro-cess from marketing, pricing, in-person presentations to the final delivery of the finished portraits.

Bert & Cindy Behnke

In Search of the Perfect Portrait

Bert and Cindy Behnke have spent their entire careers in the photography busi-ness. Cindy began her career in high school working for a local studio as a re-ceptionist/retoucher before moving into the camera room and running her own studio. Bert literally grew up in the business, the son of a photographer and sales-person in the family studio. In 1985, Bert purchased the family studio near Chicago while Cindy opened her own studio in southern Illinois in 1987. Fate intervened in 1990 when they joined forces as co-owners of their studio in Frankfort, Illinois, near Chicago. Ten years later they built their dream home/studio and continued to strive to create the perfect portrait for their clients.

Today, they have created a business that stresses extreme quality in both product and service. They like to call it the “Behnke Experience”. In the current climate of fast and cheap, the Behnke’s have chosen to go with quality and client satisfac-tion, to take the high road so to speak. They have elected to never sacrifice what they do for their clients for a lesser product. They have chosen to guarantee the “perfect portrait” to their family clients. Now, don’t confuse the “perfect portrait” with the one that scores 100 in competition or sells for $50,000. Rather, Bert and Cindy strive to create and experience that is “perfect” for each of their clients.

This program, In Search of the Perfect Portrait, is about how they have created a legacy studio, one that serves their clients at the important times in their lives. Whether a family portrait, a maternity portrait or the wedding day, they want to be “the” family photographer for their clients. They want to be a part of their clients life and family history. For those of you new to photography, they will stress what an important role you play in the families you photograph, from their newborn photography

to their senior portraits and beyond.

The program, specially designed for SEPPA, will start with how they have set up their business to best work for their clientele. It continues with Bert discussing and demonstrating his style of family portraiture, next Cindy demonstrates the all-important sales session and finally, Bert gives a few ideas on bringing in new business while Cindy goes into a live photo session doing her special style of maternity portraiture, one of the newest lines at the studio . It’s all part of the “Behnke Experience”. If you’re not reaching your sales potential or creative level, this is a must see program. Bert and Cindy will cover posing, light-

Portrait LightingGregg has been a photographer since he picked up a camera at the age of 12. Since then he has worked hard to perfect his skills and grow creatively. His background as a photographer includes a very solid edication from the Ohio Institute of Photography. After working several years in the field shooting both commercial and portrait work he was asked to return to OIP to teach. Since then he has worked at Ohio Institute of Photography and Technology, now Kaplan College. His job position is as the Pho-tography Program Director. In 1999 he married his wife Kathie and they started Wurtzler Photography. Most of their business concentrates around portrait photography including seniors, families and wed-dings. Gregg is a member of PP of Ohio and has served on the PPO board for several years. He is also a past president of PPO. His work has gained him several Courts of Honors in Commercial, Portrait and illustrative, as well as winning the George Edmundson trophy for outstanding Commercial eight times. Gregg has been in the Top Ten Photographers in Ohio several times as well as receiving the Fuji Master-piece award eight times. He has also won a Kodak Gallery award in Commercial. At national level he presently has 15 images in the Loan Collection. Gregg has also received a Grand Imaging Award for a commercial entry at the national convention. Gregg has also been an affiated Juror for PEC since 2004. He enjoys judging and helping people to better their craft.

The Right Light – Lighting 101This presentation is for both the aspiring professional and the seasoned pro who wants to add to or re-fresh their lighting toolbox. Gregg will explore lighting from the basics of a good light set-up, to totally idealizing the subject. He will be covering, but not limiting the content to; metering, light ratios, color balance, contrast, shape and dimension, and depth of light. He will also explore the concept and prac-tice of lighting types and effect on the subject. Make great images by using the right light.

The Nature of Photography: Part 1From almost total burnout to re-discovering his passion for nature and wildlife photography Joe firmly believes that within each one of us lies a frustrated nature photographer. But time and the constraints of everyday studio and family responsibilities leave little time to explore our own inner creative desires. Joe will discuss how important it is for all of us to give ourselves the permission and the time to play. This is the first key step in tapping into our own creative talents.

There will be two parts to this seminar. The first part will be a traditional lecture and demonstration and the next morning we are headed to a local spot where we can put some of these concepts into practi-cal use as well as use some of the equipment Joe uses in the field. For the past thirty nine years, Joe has built a reputation as one of Maryland’s premier portrait photogra-phers. It has only been recently that he has returned to his roots in photography. Join the Campanel-lies as they discuss the technical and creative aspects of nature and avian photography. The Smoky Mountains, the Migratory Birds of Florida, the Bald Eagles of Alaska, and Yellowstone have become their favorite playgrounds. During the last 4 years, 14 out of 16 entries have graced the pages of the PPA Loan Collection and have garnered some of the most sought after awards in the industry.

From extreme heat and cold to volcanoes and alligators this type of photography brings with it many challenges that the photographer needs to be aware of and to be able to overcome in order to bring back outstanding images.

Mary Jean will discuss the creative use of the Nik filter suite, textures, use of color to add mood and style to our photographs, creating style through print competition, and how you can take your work to the next “artistic” level using Corel Painter.

It’s Time for a Reality Check! According to the U.S Census, in 2009 the United States had the lowest number of weddings since 1968. A 40 year low in weddings along with a surge in the number of photographers willing to pho-tograph them meant the game was changing and the rules we used to play by were now out the window. Now the brides are returning to the market in 2011 and they are spending on average $5K more per wedding than they did in 2008. So with brides coming back and spending more money, now is the time for photographers to get a reality check and learn everything they need to know on how to get those big budget weddings to book with you. Brides are more savvy now and know the difference between the photographer that is using Photoshop to fix photos and the ones that use it to enhance them, they are more willing to pay for quality . Brides have the world at their finger tips as a resource to find the perfect photographer for them, the World Wide Web has grown. They also now expect more for their money when they book a photographer for their wedding day. What that means for photographers is, WE HAVE TO BE BETTER! We have to take better photos, be aware of all of the places brides are looking, know about the latest trends in our industry, and we have to be able to quickly adapt. It is no longer ok to sit back and wait for the phone to ring, now you have to be aggressive and and market yourself unlike ever before. Come sit in with Pete Wright as he speaks about the changing wedding photo industry. He will reveal the things you need to do to improve as a photographer, the things that brides now expect, the best places to be found by brides, and the things you need to do to make sure that you stand out in a very crowded market. Richard Sturdevant is a leading expert in photographic artistry and creative composites. His award winning work, style, and techniques haveearned him high praise in the photographic industry. Richard is known for an impres-sive track record in PPA print competition - receiving 13prints with a perfect 100 point score in both state, regional and district competitions. He also made history with PPA at SWPPA District competition in September 2010 for the highest print case ever scored in the USA, Receiving a 100 print score on all four of his prints. He is the Grand Imaging Award (GIA) Winner for 2011 with best print in PPA

Sturdevant’s fluid combination of photography with fine art skills stems from his original artistic roots. Prior to be-coming a photographer, Richard made his living as a classic and award-winning artist and also was a national art instructor and a published subject matter expert. Using airbrush and oil, his unique but photorealistic style made for a natural transition to photography. Today his passion for painting comes alive in his creations of pho-tographic art.

As a photographic artist, Richard received the prestigious title of 2010 and 2011 Southwest Photographer of the Year with SWPPA, 2009 and 2010 Texas Photographer of the Year with TPPA and 2008-2010 Dallas Photographer of the Year with DPPA. He also achieved International Gold and International Platinum Photographer of the Year with PPA in 2007, 2008, then went double Platinum Photographer of the year for Photographic Open and Elec-tronic Imaging in 2010. This Year he is the 2nd photographer to go Double Diamond Photographer of the Year in PPA’s International Print Competition. From 2005 to 2009, he received 9 Kodak Gallery Awards as well as 14 Fuji Masterpiece Awards. He also received 1st place in the portrait & Group category in the 2010 and 2011 WPPI16x20 print competition.

Richard owns and operates Sturdevant Studio - a thriving portrait studio in Garland, Texas. He specializes in fine art composites, seniors, families, wedding, and commercial photography. He was featured in Rangefinder maga-zine August 2006 where his image “Durrel’s Run” was featured on the cover. Richard is a member of PPA, ASP, WPPI, TPPA, DPPA and is PPA Master of Photography, Photographic Craftsman. He has also received the Master Artist of Photography in New Orleans in January 2012.

With over 20 years of experience as a creative artist, Richard brings aunique eye to the world of photographic education. Sharing his knowledge and experience with others in the industry is something that he enjoys. As part of his commitment to helping others learn and succeed, he has launched his own brand of educational materi-als to photographers, graphic designers, and artists nationwide. He believes that these materials, known as the “Sturdavinci Art Tools”, will help fellow professionals, as well as aspiring students, achieve their creative potentials and improve their workflow.

Turning the ordinary into the extraordinary will continue to be Richard’s goal in his personal photographic journey and as a platformfor his teachings.

The floor for professionals has significantly narrowed with time.

Capturing good images became a common and usual hobby for many, through the use of the camera on cell phones or a basic digital camera. Images are easily posted on facebook ; all people have to do is to click on a few buttons. The ease of access to most software programs, albums or framing companies in order to enhance their own images became very simple. In light of these changes, what can we do to distinguish ourselves from the mass and be in a class where noone else is?

By becoming the authors of an exclusive signature of timeless images while educating the public about the importance of creating memories which will last a lifetime, we set our art appart.

We will demonstrate trough lighting, composition, design and intelligent marketting, how to achieve unique lifestyle portraits, where people can see themselves and use their personalized image as a masterpiece to decorate their interior.

We will also share our extended passion to create fine art paintings, adding some great advantages in diversity to our portfolio and reaching new markets.

Change can be unsettling but wihout it, we would not evolve.
