School will be closed for students on January 23 and 24 with January 25 being the start of second semester. Students received a draft of their course selections on November 18. There are still changes being made to make the class sizes as reasonable as possible. If there are concerns, you may contact your child’s counselor. We will be starting the process for course registration for the 2012 - 2013 school year in January. Much of the information related to the courses will soon be on the AACPS website. Dear Southern High School Community,

The year is moving swiftly by and we are already making plans for the school year 2012-2013.

Southern has completed the first marking period and we celebrated the students who made honor roll

with ice cream sundaes from Brusters during the lunches on November 18. Another remarkable

accomplishment was that Southern High collected over 3,700 pounds of canned goods and

nonperishable items for the Harvest for the Hungry food drive. This is more than was collected last

year. The students had an incentive. If they brought in five items, they would get an opportunity

ticket to smash a pie in the principal’s face at their lunch. Those three lemon meringue pies tasted

very good. An even bigger accomplishment this fall was that the Girls’ Varsity Soccer team became

Regional Champions and State Finalist. This is a first time ever event and Southern is proud that the

coach, Brooke Walsh, was named Coach of the Year by the Capital. Southern is very proud of the

girls and their efforts. Their athleticism, behavior, sportsmanship along with community support has

been recognized by the State Tournament officials who award the team the MPSSAA Sportsmanship

Award.

This is a reminder that with the winter approaching there is a possibility of school closures or delays

due to weather. Have a conversation with your child regarding what they are to do should school be

closed early or delayed in opening. It is also helpful to make sure that all emergency information is

up to date with the office. If your child needs to take any kind of medication, make sure that the

medical form is completed and sent to the nurse’s office with the medicine.

The school offices will be closed over the holiday break from December 23 to January 2. The next

round of HSA testing will be the week of January 9 for students who have a basic score on previous

tests. The final exams will start on January 17 and run through January 20. See the activities calendar

on page 2 of this newsletter for the exam schedule. Each class has a two hour exam. The schools

will be on early dismissal each of those days. The students will take two exams per day unless they

have an abbreviated school day or attend CAT-S. The second marking period grade will be a

percentage and the final grade will be a letter grade which will appear on the student’s transcript.

School will be closed for students on January 23 and 24 with January 25 being the start of second

semester. Students received a draft of their course selections on November 18. There are still

changes being made to make the class sizes as reasonable as possible. If there are concerns, you may

contact your child’s counselor. We will be starting the process for course registration for the 2012-

2013 school year in January. Much of the information related to the courses will soon be on the

AACPS website. An automated call home will be made when it is officially posted.

Dropping Out of School

According to figures from the Children’s Defense Fund, one out of every eight school children will not graduate. According to the United States Census school enrollment projections; there were 53,445,000 children in school in the year 2000. If one is defining “at-risk” as “at-risk of dropping out of school,” this means we currently may be harboring as many as 6,680,625 children in our schools who are technically, legally, and educationally at-risk.

Why is Dropping Out of School So Bad? These figures are based on only year-round, full-time, male workers 18 and over who were in the civilian labor force, worked and had earnings in 2000.

Total Education

Average Annual Income for Life

Less than 9th grade Education $20,998

9th – 12th grade, No diploma $21,490

High School Graduate $32,020

Some College (incl. Associates Degree) $39,125

Bachelor’s Degree $63,216

Master’s Degree $76,340

Terminal or Professional Degree $100,230

There is also quite an incentive for advancing one’s education:

• Some high school is worth $1,000 additional income per year • A high school diploma is worth $10,000 more a year • Some college is worth another $7,100 more a year • A college degree is worth $24,000 more a year • A Master’s Degree is worth an additional $13,000 • A terminal graduate of professional degree is worth another $24,000 per year

(NOTE: This means the difference between income for a drop-out and a graduate degree is almost $78,000 per year for every income earning year – right around $3,500,000 on the average per lifetime.) Multiply any of the above amounts by the average number of working years in any person’s life – and is this a big enough reason to whatever it takes to keep kids in school? Think about the children they will raise when they have a family and what kind of influence that differential will make in their readiness, health, and socialization skills!

SCHEDULING

Students will soon be in the process of scheduling their classes for the 2012-2013 school year. Please start working with your child to make wise course choices that will prepare them for life outside of high school. To that end, Social Studies offers a wide variety of course selections to meet your child’s needs. Advanced Placement courses prepare students for the college experience. Increasingly rigorous college-level reading, writing, and analytical skills are developed by taking these challenging full year courses. They may also lead to your child receiving college credit before they go to college. The Social Studies Department offers the most AP courses

by far of any department at Southern High School.

• AP World History – study of the world from the Stone Age to the present (gr. 10-12) • AP United States History – study of American history from 1490’s to present (gr. 11-12) • AP United States Government & Politics – study of constitutional underpinnings of the American government

(gr. 11-12) The above AP courses can be used to fulfill Maryland state graduation requirements.

• AP Psychology – study of human thought and behavior – great entry-level AP course for 1st time AP takers (gr.

10-12) • AP Comparative Government – study of the function of a variety of world governments – perfect class for

people interested in our Model United Nations program (gr. 10-12) • AP Human Geography – study of humans and their use of resources around the world - great entry-level AP

course for 1st time AP takers (gr. 10-12) • AP European History – study of Europe from 1450’s to the present (gr. 12)

Advanced Placement Seminars – These support classes are designed to undergird student’s skill sets in AP World History and AP US History. They are one semester general electives, but they go a long way toward providing reinforcement for student learning in AP. Writing skills in particular will be addressed in these classes.

• Seminar AP World History • Seminar AP US History

Semester Electives (1/2 year classes) offer a wide range of educational opportunities.

• Criminal Justice – study of the American criminal justice system, legal codes, and due process • Sociology – The study of human group interaction • Social Issues of the 21st century – a current events class that deals with ongoing issues in society (do not need to

have Sociology as a pre-requisite) • African-American History – an Honors level course where students have worked with the Banneker-Douglass

Museum to create displays and do research that highlight the African-American experience in South County • Maryland History – a history of the state of Maryland with particular emphasis on Anne Arundel County and the

South County region. Students will work in conjunction with the South County Legacy Project to create research and displays that highlight the lives and history of South County.

• Comparative Religions – an Honors level course that focuses on studying the development and evolution of the world’s religions.

Student Leadership Conference

AVID students have been working on their leadership and skills while preparing for the student led conference on December 1st. Ten students were selected to attend the conference and four of those ten will present to students from all over Anne Arundel County. Southern is very excited about their presentation.

Field Trip Reviews

AVID Students attended field trips to the National College Fair, Towson University and the University of Maryland at College Park. All three trips were a huge success! Students toured campuses and spoke with admissions representatives. These trips play a huge part in helping students find the college or university that is the right fit for them. Visiting various colleges is the number one recommendation college admissions counselors suggest when searching for the right fit school. Look for another college visit in the spring. Field trips will be announced as soon as approval has been granted! Previews can be found at https://sites.google.com/site/avidsouthern/

Tutors

AVID students and staff really appreciate our amazing tutors. The AVID Program is always searching for positive role models to tutor AVID students. If any Southern community members are interested in tutoring, please contact Meghan Hryniewicz at 410.867.7100 or email [email protected].

Interested in the AVID Program? AVID is an academic program designed to provide support to students who are in the “academic” middle. In order to take the AVID elective course, students need to apply, interview, and be accepted into the AVID Program. The AVID elective provides a strong, relevant writing and reading curriculum, study skills, assistance with organization and time management, college research, and tutoring. If you are interested in applying for the program, please contact Meghan Hryniewicz by phone (410-867-7100) or email [email protected] visit our website at https://sites.google.com/site/avidsouthern/

News from Mrs. Starnes in the Library Media Center

Student achievement is enhanced through a strong student-centered library media program that encompasses teacher collaboration and community partnerships. I invite you to stay posted and become involved with library media center happenings through our school website: Southernhigh.org > Media Center and through our new Blackboard pages: aacps.org > Students > Blackboard > Username/Password: southernhs/bulldogs > SHS Library Media Center.

New Book Club! The first SHS Bulldog bookclubs are off to a great start. This is a great opportunity for students who love to read share their enthusiasm for books with peers. The next reads are: A Lunch – The Hunger Games, B Lunch – Jane Eyre, and C Lunch – The Art of Racing in the Rain

Resources for Research: Students should always research using reliable resources such as reference books and online databases. Online databases provide easy access to accurate, credible, and current print resources in an electronic format. Students have access to our card catalog and Databases from both school and remote computers with internet connection. Information on how to access these resources, as well as information on citing sources and avoiding plagiarism, is on the school website and in Blackboard (Login: southernhs Password: bulldogs. Students may also stop in the media center to receive assistance with any part of a research assignment.

. Our next meetings will take place on Thursday, December 8 in the media center.

Media Center Needs: Southern High School’s media center has many needs from updating and building the print collection to updating and improving the furniture and overall look. With all AACPS library media center budgets reduced by 10% this year, we are seeking help from our learning community in small and large ways.

1. Donate Items: Small gift cards from for popular teen restaurants and stores to use as reading incentive/media program participation prizes. These items can be dropped by the media center.

2. Purchase Celebration Books and help our collection grow. More information on the school website and Blackboard.

A special account has been set up for the purchase of new furniture. The first objective is to replace the upholstered leisure reading chairs that are stained and old. If you would like to help, you can make a tax deductible direct donation. Checks may be sent to the school and written to “Southern High School” with a note for “Media Center furniture fund.”

Reading Incentive Programs: Back by popular demand, the reading incentive programs will start in January. Students should listen to announcements and check media center pages on the school website and Blackboard.

WORKING TOGETHER TO BETTER EDUCATION December 2011/January 2012

President’s Message:

Happy Holidays from your PTSO! We have two wonderful events coming up to get you into the holiday spirit. Our first event is our Annual Bulldawg Bazaar on Saturday, December 3rd from 9 am – 2:00 pm. Our next event is the third annual Barnes and Noble Book Fair which will be held Wednesday, December 14th from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm at the Barnes and Noble in Harbour Center. We will also continue the Book Fair online from Wednesday, December 14th through Monday, December 19th at www.bn.com. We hope to see many of you at all of these fun events and participating online! The PTSO will have their next meeting on Monday, January 23rd. Hope to see you then, and have a happy and safe holiday and a very Happy New Year!

~Cindy Galloway, President Beautification Committee:

We had a great turn out for our Work Day on November 5th – including some new faces! This project has “grown” over the years, and it is great to see Southern staff, parents and students working with other members of the community to help beautify Southern.

The volunteers weeded, mulched and planted the flowers beds and signs out front, while Southern Art Students refreshed the “Paw Prints” on the entrance sidewalks. A job well done!

Special thanks to Ray Greenstreet of Greenstreet Growers for donating the pansies and for helping to underwrite the cost of the mulch.

I would also like to commend Mr. Brezina. He is truly an asset to Southern. No job is too dirty or too hard for him to handle.

Sincerely, Patricia Plitt Bulldawg Bazaar The Annual Southern High School PTSO Bulldawg Bazaar will be held December 3rd from 9 am to 2:00 pm in the school cafeteria. The Bazaar will feature many crafters, school groups, area businesses, food and of course Santa! Any questions please feel free to contact Tina Hedler or Christine Bolin. As always, thank you for your support! Tina Hedler 410-257-0126 [email protected] Christine Bolin 443-607-6159

Prom Breakfast Committee:

The Prom Breakfast Committee has grown to 34 members, but we have room and need plenty more! We are hard at work on

decorating ideas for our theme and will be ready to begin ordering them soon.

Our first fundraiser, Mixed Bag Designs, was profitable, raising $3,000! REMEMBER, YOUR MIXED BAG ORDERS WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR PICK AT THE BULLDOG BAZAAR ON SATURDAY, DECEMBER 3rd, 9:00 AM TO 2:00 PM.

We will have additional Mixed Bags to sell at the Bulldog Bazaar. Visit our table and take advantage of the many great styles and prices. These will make great gifts or gift bags for the holidays.

We will also be selling donuts, coffee, hot dogs, sodas & chips at the Bazaar. We are looking for donations of the above items to help keep our costs down and PROFITS HIGH. In addition, we could use volunteers during the day to help cook and sell hot dogs. Contact Judy Boertlein at [email protected], if you are available or would like to make a donation of items or cash to defray costs.

We are interested in more great fundraising ideas! The amount of money we raise determines the amount of great decorations we can use and the amount of great door prizes we can offer!!!!

Our next meeting is Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at 7:00 PM in the conference room. At this time, we will begin to make major decisions with regard to ordering items for Prom Breakfast. We would love to have as many Senior parents involved as possible. If you have any questions or ideas for fundraisers, contact Sally Mastroberti at [email protected] or Jobi Ferguson at [email protected]. Volunteering at Southern High

Volunteers are welcome and needed at Southern High School! There are plenty of opportunities for you to become involved in your local high school… volunteering is one big part you can play. You will be working in a warm, friendly and caring environment. You will be greatly appreciated! If you would like to be added to the Volunteer Email list, please send your contact information to [email protected]. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Denise Norfolk at 410-867-4764 or [email protected] or contact Mrs. Watts at Southern High School. Even if you can only help occasionally we’d love to have you join us.

We are currently looking for volunteers who would like to come in to school and make copies for teachers. If you would like to volunteer to do this, please contact Denise Norfolk to let her know what day(s) you are available.

Thank you to the volunteers who have helped so far this year! You are greatly appreciated at Southern High School.

PARENT INVOLVEMENT NEWS

Healthy Lifestyles: Promote It Every Day!

Studies now link physical fitness with academic success! So, families everywhere are trying to get back into shape. National PTA chose November as their Healthy Lifestyles Month. PTAs nationwide participated with a wide variety of programs and events to promote health education and physical activity. But, this program cannot be limited to one month. We must all work together to make healthy living a true lifestyle. Here are a few of the suggestions from National PTA to get your family started:

• Be sure to set realistic goals when setting up your family’s fitness program.

• Schedule regular family times for activities that get all of you active. • Remember to use the stairs whenever possible. • Host a party where you play games that have a high level of physical

activity. For more information, visit www.PTA.org.

December is Write to a Friend Month!

December is the perfect month to practice writing letters to friends and family. No matter what holiday your family celebrates, take the time to have your child write a letter or a card with a short note. Take the time to talk about the year and things that have happened. Discuss what friends and family might want to hear. Review the structures for letters, notes, and cards. And, for even more fun – add arts and crafts. Take the time to make your own stationery first.

Other Dates to Remember in December.

• December is Read a New Book month. Books make great gifts! • December 20th is National Games Day. Take time to get together as a

family and play a game or two. Remember to include games that are not only fun but educational.
