raise was the byword throughout the 2010 Southern Bible Conference, in its 59th season and the 41st year held at Lake Junaluska, N.C. This year’s theme, “Lift

Jesus Higher – Inhabit His Praise,” brought delegates from across the territory and around the world to sing glory and blessing to our Great Redeemer.

This year’s speakers were: Dr. John Oswalt, Dr. James Read and Lt. Colonels Jeqeza Timothy and Zakithi Mabaso. Christian comedian Justin Fennell was the special guest for the opening session. The conference theme song was “Praise the Almighty.”

One first for this Bible conference was Tuesday evening’s program, conducted entirely by retired Salvation Army officers.

On Thursday evening the ARC Command took the stage, featuring five testimonies of Christ’s transforming power. The 300-plus voices boomed through the auditorium by singing a medley of “How Great Is Our God” and “How Great Thou Art.”

Youth Night featured a music program titled “Building A House Of Praise.” Different forms of praise were employed, “not to entertain, but to deliver the gospel message,” said Major Andrew Wiley, youth conference director.

Saturday night brought an encore performance of the Hobgood musical, “Brengle: My Life’s Ambition.”

TSM Dan Hager announced the soldier-driven campaign now underway to collect funds to build a new facility for the Port-au-Prince Central Corps. “$10 for Haiti” presents Southern Salvationists with a unique opportunity “to partner with our comrades in Haiti to restore what was lost in the devastating earthquake on Jan. 12, 2010,” the territorial sergeant-major said.

Commissioners Max and Lennie Feener then called the Caribbean Territory’s leaders, Colonels Onal and Edmane Castor, and Majors Ron and Carol Busroe to the platform for prayer of dedication for the project. The Busroes will oversee the reconstruction.

The Bible conference concluded with the Sunday morning service, “A Life Of Praise,”

led by Colonel Terry Griffin, chief secretary. The service included the installation of Lt. Colonels Mark and Alice Bell as ARC commander and director of special services. The territorial leaders, Commissioners Max and Lennie Feener, performed the installation before escorting the couple to the altar for a prayer of dedication during their new assignment.

Later, Commissioner Max Feener brought the message from Colossians 3 on holiness. The territorial commander stressed three evidences of God’s extravagant grace: We are God’s chosen people; We are holy; and We are dearly loved by him.

“How do we let the peace of God rule in our hearts?” Commissioner Feener asked the delegates. “We do it by trusting him and obeying him.”

Sinus infectionStanding in the middle of Office Max, I told my

wife, Donna, that I needed to go to the hospital. I had only recently left the hospital after an extended stay, so it was the last place I wanted to go. However, I was suffering from the classic signs of a heart attack/stroke: chest pain, sweats, numbness in the left arm, nausea, light-headedness and disorientation.

Donna got me in the car and drove rapidly to the hospital. I was soon attached to various wires and tubes. Thirty minutes after being in the room, they ran a cat scan of my head and of my neck to see if there was a sign of stroke.

After two hours, the emergency room doctor came in and said to us, “We are not sure about your episode, but I have determined from your cat scan that you do have a minor sinus infection, and I will be prescribing an antibiotic for that.” With that, he left.

After more tests the next day it was determined that my heart was healthy and that I had suffered from a false heart attack, perhaps caused by extreme low blood pressure and change in medication.

I have had more than one good laugh about the absurdity of being in a hospital room waiting to hear about a possible life-and-death issue and have the doctor pop in and say, “Forget all that stuff, I am going to be in charge of taking care of your sniffles.”

The thinkers of this day and age propose that we are in a post-Christian world, that Christianity is past its prime and is now in a slow, steady decline. Some say we should become more tolerant of sin and blend into the culture, while others propose that we become more separated from the culture and grow by more and better programming.

The Apostle Paul in Colossians 3 moves us from cold sniffler quacks to heart changers. People are attracted by two very real things he says, first in relation to how the world is best viewed and how we can best act.

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

The second thing that emerges is that it is more than formality and deeds – to steal a phrase from Coca Cola, it is the real thing.

The peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

I want to ask my fellow corps officers: Was the last conversation you had with your divisional leaders or other corps officers about finance, family stores, property, or was it about precious souls being brought into the kingdom of God and being sanctified completely? My fellow soldiers in the corps, are you preparing and being engaged in the battle by daily knee drills, sword practice for your company, or are you engaged in useless drills of complaints, malingering and desertion from the conflict.

I do hope and pray for all of us in our personal and corporate spiritual confessions to God in the great spiritual war that we move beyond our sinus conditions and see into the heart of the matter.

Major Mildred Birney

Major Mildred Birney was promoted to Glory on July 28, 2010, from Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount, N.C. Major Al Smith and Captain Mark Hunter officiated at the funeral service. Committal was in Rocky Mount Memorial Park.

Mildred Esther Birney was born Oct., 4, 1925, in Milton, Pa., to Major Francis Asbury Birney and Esther Mae Birney. Her conversion took place in Greenwood, S.C., in 1933, and she was enrolled as a junior soldier there. In the following years she became a senior soldier, bandsman, corps cadet and Sunday school teacher.

While attending a camp meeting she became interested in Asbury College and became a student there, graduating in 1948 and going on to officer training from Spartanburg, S.C., as a member of the Standard Bearers session.

Commissioned June 5, 1950, she served as assisting officer or youth officer in Elizabeth City, Reidsville, Rocky Mount, Greensboro and Gastonia, N.C., and Charleston, S.C. She served as Guard and Sunbeam Director in the Arkansas-Louisiana and Georgia divisions. In 1967 she was appointed education officer at the School for Officer Training, followed by an appointment as territorial director and later secretary of the Bureau of Education which later became the Education Department. On Oct. 10, 1990, Mildred was honorably retired, having completed 40 years in active officership.

Never married, her nieces and nephews were very special to her and brought much joy. To them she will always be “Aunt Mimi.” She had a great love for children which was evident throughout her life. In her retirement years she enjoyed sewing, needlework, reading and gardening and found great enjoyment in her Bible study group, which she attended for over 15 years.

She is preceded in death by her parents, siblings Robert and Gilbert Birney, Ethel (Birney) Boone, Mary Ruth (Birney) Greene and nieces Beverly Nash and Marilyn Luper.

Mildred is survived by brother Major James (LaVonne) Birney, six nieces, two nephews, 18 great nieces and nephews and a brother-in-law.

Major Elaine HallMajor Elaine Hall was

promoted to Glory Aug. 11, 2010, from Waco, Texas. The funeral service was held at the Waco Corps with Lt. Colonel Henry Gonzalez, Lt. Colonel Orville Salmon and Captain Russell Czajkowski officiating. The interment was at Waco Memorial Park.

Elaine Rosalie Wyatt was born July 30, 1925, in Houston to George and Millie Wyatt. She was dedicated in the Army at age 3, and throughout her childhood and teen years was a faithful Salvationist. She participated in corps ministries as songster, bandsman, Sunday school teacher, Sunbeam assistant, Young People’s Legion secretary and voluntary leader in various other activities.

On May 15, 1944, she was commissioned an officer in Atlanta and served as assistant in the Tyler and Fort Worth, Texas, corps.

On June 14, 1946, Elaine was married to Robert Earl Hall who had returned to Houston after serving with distinction as a signalman in the U.S. Navy in World War II aboard the USS New Jersey. Following his commissioning as an officer in 1949, he and Elaine served in Austin, Littlefield, Big Spring, Corsicana, Midland, Waco, Lubbock, Austin, Amarillo and San Angelo, Texas. They were honorably retired from active service Sept. 30, 1989, after a combined 82 years of service.

Elaine was a delegate to the International College for Officers in London in 1970. She was well-known for her love for young people and character-building activities for them. Her ministry included music, drama, puppetry, chalk-drawing and counseling. She was noted for her compassionate concern for others and was selected as a peer counselor for and by her fellow-Salvationist friends and was lovingly referred to as “MOM” (mother of many). Her beloved husband preceded her in death on July 15, 2004, as well as her grandson, Robert Ray Harrison.

Survivors include daughters Janet (Ray) Harrison, Beverly Munoz and Barbara (David) Parnell; foster daughter and cherished friend, Josie Moore, brother Brian Wyatt, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and extended family. She touched many lives throughout her years of devoted, unswerving ministry.

Inhabit his praiseThe only Scripture verse referring to “inhabit”

and “praise” is found in Psalm 22:3 – and actually it speaks of God the Father being found in the praise we offer up to him.

But the theme of the 2010 Southern Bible Conference offers how our response to that beloved psalm can enhance our spiritual lives while blessing God with our praise and adoration.

When I was growing up I heard a lot of talk about “being into” something. I’m into this, or, I’m into that. It’s immersing yourself in those things that are important to you – your family, your career, your portfolio.

It’s where you live. It’s a part of you.Jesus warned that where your treasure is, there

will your heart be also (Matthew 6:21). That’s a simple sentence that presents a profound truth. You will think about those things that matter most. The positive inference is this: “If only the Lord mattered to you most – there’s nothing you wouldn’t do for him. Nothing you would withhold from giving to him. Your

last penny or even your life.”Praise is certainly “Lifting Jesus Higher,” our

territorial theme for the past few years. But praise to God is also becoming Christ’s hands and feet to those in need around you or around the world. Praise is the first thought as you wake, and the last as you fall asleep. Lifting our hands in praise may be an outward sign of our connection with Jesus while we are in church; but how we react to things during the week is what the world looks at.

“Get into God” sounds so 1960s. But it’s what the Father really wants you to do.

Wrap your mind around that.

Praying in the many names of God

What’s in a name? In eastern cultures, names are given for the purpose of direction, identity and character, and hopefully they’re realized as that person lives their life.

But the names of the Triune God inform us of who he is and not who he is becoming. These names are established so that we could have a reasonable sense of his character, having complete confidence in the authenticity of those names. Therefore, I have provided a list of names of the Trinity to give a broader spectrum to your prayers. You may take a name for each day as you worship God in your prayer time or simply pray down this list of names, and the promised Holy Spirit will lift your soul as you bask in the many names of the Godhead. (Clip this list and place it in your Bible.)

Growing up as one of 11 siblings, Arnaz Moore understands the word “share.” He said he got used to never having anything of his own, but the communal lifestyle didn’t do much to promote unity in his home. Sibling rivalry and competition was the norm. Family harmony wasn’t.

His story shows that finding family isn’t about being surrounded by people; it’s about feeling a sense of love and belonging.

Moore’s search for a family led him into gang membership by the age of 12. By then, he had been to at least six funerals and was involved in drugs, alcohol and violent crime. It was a pattern he had planned to continue until he landed in lockup for juvenile delinquents. When he was discharged, he was sent for six months of mentoring under a man named Greg White. While White wasn’t a Salvationist himself, he had learned about The Salvation Army through family members. So one Sunday, he took Moore to the Atlanta Peachcrest Corps.

What started on a Sunday spilled over into youth programs every Wednesday. Then, Moore started attending Tuesday Bible Study. Moore said his relationship with The Salvation Army put him on a

lifestyle changed when he found what he’d been looking for in the congregation. “Everywhere I looked, there was a smile. It was comforting. I was shown a different type of family, and I felt welcome,” he said.

That was three years ago, and today Moore is 18 years old; a soldier at the corps; involved in Corps Cadets; Step Team; Men’s Club; Community Care Ministries; teaches Sunday school; helps plan worship and just returned from his first mission trip.

Two youth mission teams from the Georgia Division traveled to Valdosta, Ga., to work with the corps and develop relationships with local teens. One team performed dances as a means of connecting to youth; Moore’s team conducted community outreach.

Moore said he enjoyed meeting young people. His team visited one neighborhood in Valdosta similar to where he grew up, a lower-income community where young people are more at risk. He said it made him feel good to encourage other young people – through his story – that getting involved at The Salvation Army can truly change their life.

After all, he should know. Not only has Moore’s heart and life been

Arnaz Moore’s search for love and belonging led him at last to Atlanta Peachcrest Corps

transformed, but he also brings two of his siblings to the corps regularly. His parents are very proud of him and know he’s headed in the right direction now.

Lt. Carlos Cantu, corps officer at Atlanta Peachcrest Corps, said he’s impressed with Moore’s leadership skills and heart to serve. “His personality comes with the initiative to help anywhere he can. I’ve seen firsthand what he has to put up with coming from a low-income neighborhood, and Arnaz rises above and beyond the preconceived idea of what a teenager of that background looks like. What Arnaz contributes in just his willingness to serve plays a vital role in the corps and in his personal life.”

The high school graduate is headed to Trevecca University in the fall to major in business administration. He hopes to work in the field of entertainment law or project management.

Arnaz Moore enjoys sharing his story with other young people trying to find their way.

‘Singing On The Mountain’ returns to Shelton-Laurel CorpsA long-standing tradition returned to the Mountain Mission in western North Carolina with the resurrection of the 67th annual Singing Convention, hosted by the Shelton-Laurel Corps. Also known as ‘Singing On The Mountain,’ the event was discontinued seven years ago but is making its comeback after a groundswell of support. ‘Worshipping in the beauty of these mountains presents a unique opportunity for us to sing praises to God,’ said Lieutenant Susan Graf, Shelton-Laurel corps officer. Gospel music lovers enjoyed a number of presentations, from soloists, duets and groups such as the Goebel Family (shown) from Gastonia, N.C., singing ‘Be Thou My Vision.’

Caribbean leaders attend Southern Bible Conference

While it is not uncommon for Salvationists and guests from other territories to enjoy the weeklong Southern Bible Conference as a delegate, it is rare for a sitting territorial commander from overseas to attend.

Colonels Onal and Edmane Castor, Caribbean territorial leaders, were welcomed on the first night of Bible Conference by Lt. Colonel Eddie Hobgood, who introduced the couple to the other delegates. After a warm welcome from their Southern comrades, the Castors settled in for the rich Bible lessons presented throughout the week by the speakers, Dr. John Oswalt, Dr. James Read and Lt. Colonels Jeqeza Timothy and Zakithi Mabaso.

“We are overwhelmed by all that is taking place here,” said Colonel Edmane Castor. “The organization of such an event is most impressive.”

Her husband, Colonel Onal Castor agreed, adding that their first trip to the Southern Bible Conference is not only a learning experience, but a tremendous spiritual blessing as well.

“We are honored and privileged to be here, and we are enjoying the fellowship with our brothers and sisters in this territory,” the Caribbean territorial commander said.

“We’ve learned much from the excellent speakers, and we are basking in the great blessings God is bestowing on us,” he said.

Major Frank Duracher

Dr. John Oswalt: From five Psalms of praise (8, 72, 118, 101, 135), Dr. Oswalt brought compelling evidence of God’s hesed (unmerited grace for us). Psalm 8 correctly identifies Christ as Yahweh, revealing God’s greatest glory. Psalm 135, a hymn of praise, foretells Christ as being free enough, good enough and unique enough to save us. The glories of the Son of David are detailed in Psalm 72 – prophesying Christ’s task, realm, eternal rule, name and blessing bestowed on him by the Father. Jesus used the words of Psalm 118, a hymn of thanksgiving, so that we may see him as a victorious Messiah over death. Lastly, a Psalm of mid-day, Psalm 101, challenges us to have “a perfect heart” made possible by a walk of unbroken fellowship with him.

Dr. James E. Read: The hymn “The Cosmic Christ” explains Jesus as “the image of the invisible God,” bearing the Father’s authority, and entitled as “the firstborn of all creation.” Dr. Read then took us to Psalm 22, quoted by Jesus from the Cross, showing how that ancient song can be both a Psalm of light and darkness. “Ever had an experience in which you intended one thing, but something else quite different happened?” asked Read in his third session. “That’s what happened during Christ’s trial.” In his fourth (final) session, the two most important commandments (love God and your neighbor) uncovers why God prefers our obedience over sacrifices in “Is This Not the Fast That I Choose?”

Lt. Colonel Jeqeza Timothy Mabaso: The biggest rescue mission in history began in Genesis 2 and ends in Revelation 21, Lt. Colonel Mabaso preached in his first session. He then taught how Jesus is appointed to heaven’s highest office and our appointment is as members of “one big family in Christ Jesus.” The guarantee of a better covenant is made possible because of “The Unlimited Perfect Order” (Hebrews 7). Lt. Colonel Mabaso stayed in the book of Hebrews (10) for his fourth sermon, “Christ, the Exhorter,” citing the difference between worldly and heavenly confidence. Two Mounts (Sinai and Zion) represent the Law and Grace, respectively, in “Christ, the Mount.”

Brengle’s storyreturns to stageat Lake JunaluskaBy Major Frank DuracherSOUTHERN SPIRIT STAFF

“Brengle: My Life’s Ambition” was brought to the stage for the Saturday evening program of the 2010 Southern Bible Conference. Originally presented at the Southern Territory’s 2008 territorial congress, the musical, written and composed by Lt. Colonel W. Edward Hobgood and choreographed by Vincent Kirk Musgrave, was presented in dedication to Commissioners Max and Lennie Feener, as well as Lt. Colonels Charles and Shirley White, on the occasion of their final Southern Bible Conference as active Salvation Army officers.

The play is the story of a young man whose life’s ambition was to be rich and famous. God had other ideas, and through his experience of sanctification, reading the works of Catherine Booth, meeting William Booth, and of course, that spunky Salvationist lassie, Lily, Brengle discovered his destiny lay in the ministry of The Salvation Army.

Considered the Army’s leading teacher, preacher and writer on the doctrine of holiness, Brengle preached in every state of the United States at that time, Australia, New Zealand and most of Europe.
