Another busy term comes to its end, the days are getting longer, and the
winter codes and their respective representative seasons are giving way to
summer codes.
It is timely to reflect on the huge variety of success that the young men of
Southland Boys’ High School have had over the recent weeks.
Many of us have been lucky enough to taste the success of the culinary
team who have been busy competing and fundraising this term whilst
running the ever popular Tryline Café.
The school’s representation at the Murihiku Polyfest were wonderful and
passionate performances that reflect the huge effort and determination of all those involved both on the
stage and supporting the performances.
On stage performances have also involved several members of staff and students in the recent ‘Grease, Arena
spectacular’ at the ILT Stadium with other notable performances from Unison at the 75th annual Big Sing Out.
The wrap up of the winter sports codes and tournament performances continue to be a strength of our young
men with the huge support, which the school is very thankful for, of the teachers and parents who give their
time to ensure teams can run. Many notable performances were produced from teams and individuals
throughout the season, but a special mention must be made to Corbin Strong who with members of the New
Zealand Track Cycling Team produced a gold medal performance at the recent World Junior Track Cycling
event in Switzerland.
The newly elected student council has met for the first time, please keep an eye out for further details from
them.
Congratulations should also go to Kaea Edwin (Year 12) recently voted into the role of BOT student
representative for the 2018/2019 year.
As we look forward to the holiday break our senior students must remain focused on the increasingly small
number of days left in this academic year. Whether it is Level 1, Level 2 or Level 3 as a target this year ‘now’
is the time to complete the tasks and meet the deadlines, as we all know ‘later’ often never occurs as priorities
may change.
Please have a safe and relaxing October holiday.

Term 2 School Holiday Junior Cooking Programme
During the holidays Scott Buchanan and our senior culinary team held a Junior cooking programme for school
students between the ages of 8-13 years. The programme was over three days and each day there was
approximately 25 budding young chefs taking part. They prepared and cooked two savoury items and one
treat item. Some of their menus included; Chicken
Stir Fry, Mini Quiches, Macaroni Cheese, Caramel
Popcorn, Fruit Kebabs, Spaghetti Bolognaise and
much more. They also learned essential kitchen skills
and work habits such as cleaning and tidying as they
work, food hygiene, how to read recipes and
measure correctly. If they had not eaten their food
before the end of the day, they took it home for their
parents to sample. This is the first time SBHS has
held a Junior Cooking Programme during the school
holidays and the feedback from the children and
parents was very positive. All profits raised from the
cooking school went towards the boys in our SBHS
Culinary Team who competed at the National
Hospitality Championships in Auckland on 11
August 2018.

Southland Secondary School Debating Championships 17-19 August 2018
The Championships were held at Southland Girls’ High School, on Friday 19 August. The competition at
Junior level was to find the winners who would then go forward to compete on Sunday. Southland Boys’ High
School had two teams entered in the Junior Section. They were:
Year 10 Year 9
Sam White Daniel Titter
Joel Morgan Noah Stratford
Dylan Lee Sebastian Carston
Our Year 10 group went forward to compete on Sunday afternoon. They won two of their debates and
came third overall in the Year 10 Section.
Our one Senior team consisted of:
Isaac Myron
Kapila Tohiariki
Will Scully
Our Senior team won two of their three debates and Will Scully was awarded the Best Speaker of the Senior
Section. The three teams were well-rehearsed and professional in appearance, behaviour and speaking
skills. They faced stiff competition from the opposing teams but remained composed at all times. This was
the result of many hours of practice, not only in debating techniques, but in presentation and improving
vocal skills. Congratulations and well-done to our students.

Sports
Archery
When I decided to shoot for the first time, it was recommended to me by the school Guidance Councillor,
and a year after here I am making a name for myself in New Zealand Archery. I recently went to the South
Island Indoor Competition where I came 5th and my personal best score out of 180 is 174. I have fallen in
love with the sport and a lot of it goes to my coach Ardy Ayto. He gave me a chance and never lost faith in
me; he’s always had gear for me and the other students and all up is an amazing person. I feel obliged to
make him and my community proud as I take on the country with my team that includes George Naylor,
Tommy Dobbins and myself.

Cycling – SISS Timaru Report
Great results by the SBHS cycling team at SISS Cycling in Timaru. There were 230 cyclists entered from 57
schools all over the South Island. Overall, the SBHS Team placed 5th which was a fantastic result for a small
team of 9. Well Done Boys! The SBHS cycling team did themselves and school proud, both on and off the
bike, all gaining great experience and personal achievements. They will now be training for National Schools
Cycling, being held at the end of September, for first time in the South Island (Christchurch). Congratulations
to Mitchel for winning Gold medal in U16 road race and Bronze medal in time trial, Corbin for winning U20

World Junior Track Cycling Champs
Congratulations to Corbin Strong who was part of the team’s pursuit winning Gold at the World Junior Track
Cycling Champs in Switzerland recently. His coach Sid Cumming commented that Corbin was a real talent
and trains exceptionally hard. Well done!! Corbin was greeted at the Invercargill Airport by his fellow students
from Southland Boys’ High School. To honour his cycling achievements the students, friends and family
performed haka. Simon Coe, Southland Boys’ High Rector was there to meet the World Champion cyclist
and said “Boys’ High were extremely proud of Corbin. It’s stunning, great for the region. He’s an ambassador
for New Zealand, not just for our school.”
Corbin has been away from home for nearly three months and was pleased to get back home. In the coming
months Corbin’s plans include cycling in Nelson, Junior Tour of Southland and the Tour of Southland.

Smallbore Target Shooting
For the first time in 8 years, we were beaten in the final. The shoulder-to-shoulder match took place at the
Invercargill Range between 7 and 9pm on Monday 20th of August.
Placings
1st Menzies College
2nd Southland Boys' High School
3rd Central Southland
Menzies College beat us into second place by 25 points (a significant margin) with some excellent shooting
that surpassed many of our Team's personal bests. Their young and talented team will likely dominate the
local competition for the next few years. In addition Flynn Longman (Team Captain) and Devin Watts
achieved 2nd and 3rd placings respectively in the Regional Qualifier Top Scores in the qualifier rounds. Other
news on the night was that recent old boy and former Team Captain and team member Jordan Erskine has
been named in the New Zealand Junior shooting team for 2018. – By Ian Welsh
Softball
U17 Southern Pride 2018
By Cameron Wallace
During the last week of Term 2, 14 boys from around the South Island travelled to Brisbane, Australia to
complete in the U19 International Friendship Softball Series. Of the 14 boys selected, 8 were from Southland
- 6 of them from Southland Boys'. The boys were Josh Richardson, Lachlan Springford, Ben Symon, Bray
Dallas-Ormsby, Kiahn Johnson and me. Our first game was against Australia Green. We went down 11-0,
but it was good to play together for the first time. Our second game that day was against New Zealand U17
Emerging Sox. We lost 5-2, but it was a good battle and a big improvement compared to our first game.
Day 2 we were looking for a win. The first game we played was against Australia Gold, but we lost 9-1.
Our second game was against Queensland. We were nearing our first victory until a change of pitcher
followed by multiple errors let Queensland win 10-4. Personally, I believe Day 3 was our best performance
day. First up was U19 United South Island. We were in the game for most of it until USI put on their first-
string pitcher and catcher. We went down 13-6.
-

The last game of the round robin for us was facing Southside Stingers and we wanted a win. After a tough
game and a player injury, we came out tied 8-8, leaving us 6 th out of 7 th on the table. Day 4 play offs was
rained off, which meant unfortunately only the top four teams played on Day 5.
The tournament was a great learning experience for most of us as we hadn't played at such a level or against
International teams before. While in Australia we were also lucky enough to go to Movie World and Australia
Zoo. A big thank you also to the Mainland Softball management team, and Southland Softball Association.
In late Term Three Braeden Heslip left New Zealand bound for a 22-day tour
of Canada as part of the ISA New Zealand Development Boys’ softball team.
Throughout Braeden’s time over in Canada, he played about 26 games in
three Canadian States, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Alberta. During his
time, Braeden was constantly being put through his paces, with playing a
minimum of 2 games back to back each day, with very little down time to
see the sights of a country on the other side of the world. However, when
given the opportunity to represent his country for a second time in Canada
he made the most of the opportunity and gave it his all and enjoyed
experiencing other cultures. “I learned a lot over there and think it’s an
amazing experience to go overseas playing the sport you love and
experience different cultures”. Braeden plans to continue to work hard with
his softball and possibly go back over to Canada next year to play for the
Pimicikamak Thunder U19 team for a couple of months.

Triathlon World Champs
Jaxon Taylor (16) has qualified for the Triathlon
World Champs in the U20 age group in which he will
be racing on the Gold Coast in September 2018.
Jaxon has competed in a variety of races
throughout New Zealand in the lead up to this
race, qualifying last November. Only 16, he has
raced across older age groups for most of the
year which will help prepare him for the World
Champs. He was 1st place in the Southland U19
Tri Champs, 1st in the South Island Champs, and
finished 5th in his first year of competing in the
U19 age group at the New Zealand Secondary
School Champs in Nelson earlier this year. Jaxon
competed in the Junior (U20) Oceania Champs in
March this year and unfortunately didn't have his
best race but came away with 13th place. Jaxon
has worked hard over the winter months in
preparation for the World Champs, training up to
18 hours/week with a combination of swimming,
biking, running and strength and conditioning
training. He was privileged enough to be selected
as part of the Academy Southland Programme
where he has been offered invaluable support
around such things as nutrition, key mental skills
and preparation, training/academic/life balance,
strength and conditioning, and goal setting. –
Update: Jaxon achieved 6th place overall in the Triathlon World Champs – Awesome achievement Jaxon!
