• Reinvigoration of the 21st Street corridor• New public access over the railroad to South Side
Riverfront Park• Blending of modern and old world design style• Seamless pedestrian and bikeway from Carson Street to
the park• 21st Street lined with pervious pavement and vegetated
swales• Increased parking from 33 spots to 40 spots
April 10 through 12, 2014
Study Area A – Design Details
• 9’ parking lanes, 5’ bikeways, & 11’ travel lanes each direction
• 7’ sidewalks & 4’ vegetated swales in most areas• Pervious pavement parking lanes to catch road runoff• Vegetated swales to catch sidewalk runoff• Vegetated curb bump outs at each intersection• All pervious elements will be underlain with 2’ of gravel
backfill

Study Area A – Innovative Design Features• Underdrain with water level controls, valves between zones –
overflow removal• Monitoring system: water level, water content, temp, electrical
conductivity (salts) in storage aggregate and underlying soil• Adjustable Thresholds (e.g., water depth, drainage rate)
